Ha ha ha. What a story, Mark.

[up][up] I wouldn't say it's the plot's fault: Piccolo's strategies are all pretty stupid and fall apart logically.

"Let me sit here and charge up an attack for five minutes while Goku tries to hold off a guy who was easily kicking our asses when we worked together. Then I'll fire it but Goku has to hold him in place and he has to forget that he can fly. My keikaku is flawless."

[up] To be fair, it would have went off without a hitch hadn't Goku bought into Raditz's Wounded Gazelle Gambit.

And it wouldn't have taken Five minutes if he'd had both arms (which leads me to ask why he didn't just regrow the arm, but lets continue to be generous and assume it would have taken too much Ki that he needed for the technique).

Holy crap why didn't he grow his arm back? Its easy as shit every other time.

Also that technique needed two arms?

Yeah. I thought it was just that he hadn't fully perfected it yet and that's why it took so long, but no. The 5 minute charge time was due to needing both arms to do it and being forced to make do with one.

Remember that blast he and Krillin fire at Nappa when Gohan chickens out? Some thing that's why the proper version of the technique looks like, but no one knows because he never uses it again in manga canon after the Raditz fight.

Growing his arm back costs stamina.

But since he had enough stamina for two shots it would probably be smarter (from his perspective) to regrow the arm and take one shot without the lengthy charge.

He also didn't even know about the tail weakness, his plan would have failed without that. And even Goku's naievty didn't matter: Raditz later reveals he could have escaped by cutting his tail off, so it was only Gohan's miraculous rage power and Goku's sacrifice that made Piccolo's plan work.

And after Raditz and Goku establish that Raditz can remove his tail to get around the weakness, Piccolo formulates a plan to target Nappa's tail. Because Piccolo is an idiot.

I mean, he might have actually used the two armed version once in the fight against Nappa. But him doing it with one-hand has become iconic, so that's what we always see despite not being how the technique is actually supposed to be performed.

[up][up]Wait. Wasn't the thing with the tail something Goku said he could have done (which he didn't when Goku grabbed him the first time).

I thought that was only brought up to justify Goku giving him a full nelson and letting Piccolo shoot them both?

[up] It also doesn't help that, once again, he never uses it again (officially) in the manga—barring the Nappa incident, which might be a generic ki attack even with the spiral—so people only have the first use to go by and that kinda stuck.

Well I guess power-scaling was in effect. Everything was a bigger deal back then. Still weird seeing everyone run instead of flying while fighting.

Yes, but it doesn't change that it means the tail weakness was a bad idea to target.

It's kind of funny to think about how when Raditz was first introduced, he was by far the strongest member of the cast.

Yeah. Poor guy was only meant to be a measuring stick.

Honestly, why was he even made out to be Goku's brother. That connection ended up being so irrelevant that it was honestly a waste to play such a card in the first place.

That, and it really serves to cenent how little Goku cares about blood ties, which is pretty important to the whole arc.

Honestly, I wish more series did that. Have a big dramatic reveal of a character with a family relation to another character, then kill them off and never mention them again. Especially if the familial relationship is the least notable thing about that character.

What I love about Dragon Ball is that it defies most tropes that would later become standard for battle shounen series despite being the grandfather of them all.

Which is what makes Future Trunk's victory against Merged Zamasu so weird because it feels like something that happens today instead of something DB-ish.

Sometimes I think the subversions are to the story's detriment, though. Like Dabura, for instance; I think I'd have preferred if he'd been used straight as a genuine threat and his realm fleshed out more.

I personally don't really care much about that since Raditz being Goku's brother is superfluous anyway. You could have just had him be a fellow Saiyan and the result doesn't change all that much.

It is kind of funny to think how Anime tends to make a big deal out of familial relationships most of the time, particularly between a pair of brothers, but then Dragon Ball is like "Who the fuck cares about Goku's brother, nobody that's who"

[up][up]

I can agree with this. There are a few times when it would be nice if he just let something work instead of deciding to fuck with people to catch them off guard.

[up][up][up] You mean, up until the moment where Zamasu pretty much Lol!Noped! that entire thing right and murdered everyone.

So uh...are we just gonna forget when Goku used the Spirit Bomb to defeat Buu in a manner similar to Trunks did to Zamasu?
