Just saw the episode. Bit disappointed that Tien only took out one enemy while Krillin and Roshi took out three in the episodes where it was their time to shine, but the episode was overall pretty solid. The game of cat and mouse and the strategies on both sides reminded me of a JoJo fight.

I mean, how else can you hammer in how much a better dad than Goku he is? Because apparently that's the only part of his character people actually find interesting; a version of his relationship with Gohan that either never existed or changed fairly quickly.
That being said, I'm actually not as down on this arc (or at least the tournament) as some of you are. I largely agree that the problems you say are there are there, but I think there have been some cool bits here and there. And to be fair, it isn't over yet, so precedent aside, I'm not going to call it a total wash yet.

Ohhhh no. We are not opening up that can of worms again.
Though for what it's worth, I do remember Piccolo saying at least once that Gohan taught him the value of having a friend.
No beer?! But if there's no beer, then there's no beef or beans!I mean, whether you actually believe that or not, I think it's kind of hard to argue against the idea that that's what Super is doing with Piccolo. Though it gets a bit confusing when they also try and play up Gohan's and Goku's relationship a fair bit. As the discussion was going, I think it's more about pandering to nostalgia than anything else.
But, friendship doesn't amount to fatherhood, and I'm pretty sure that was filler (or padding) anyway.

I think you just have a different definition of what makes someone a dad than other people. No need to complain about it all the time.
I don't think he can reform as any one of them, just the original.

Except I wasn't complaining about that specifically, I was mentioning how Super just shoehorns it in all the time. Like I said, even if you like it, I feel like that shouldn't be a controversial statement. It's just a thing Super is doing, like being inconsistent with absolute and relative strength levels.
Or that people just have warped ideas of what a good "dad" is, but this is anime so that's expected.

After watching the whole video, I have one thing to ask...
I was wondering the same thing. Time for some bingeing...
Also, did I miss something regarding Goku not being able to use Instant Transmission towards to an uncharged Prum and uses physical force? Like, the scene with him and Vegeta hurling rocks was funny enough, but they didn't seem to have exhausted all of their options.
I know a lot of people rag on '10s culture for being pretty much nothing but Millennial nostalgia (with revivals of stuff like Star Wars, Power Rangers, DB, even Mystery Science Theater) but honestly I see a kind of tragedy in it. Millennials are now grown up and pretty miserable now that we've realized how much the deck was stacked against us. We pay so much for nostalgia because we take refuge in it.
That makes sense to me. Green Hill Zone gets shoved into almost every Sonic game despite that there being some fans who started off with other Sonic games other than Sonic 1. Super tries to do a similar thing by 'fixing' some of the characterization (For example Goku with his being a 'Superman' character by making him even more of a jerk), randomly making their characters strong, with almost no explanation, etc. but it seems lack the spirit of the original to the point where even those fans that started with Dragon Ball Funi dub or even TFS can notice something has changed.
Dragon Ball Super is a deconstruction of the Franchise Zombie where it gives what we believed we wanted but subverting those same tropes and revealing how our demands affect the series.
Or it could be that Super is just capitalizing on our nostalgia for sales.
Edit: The Plauge comes up with good points about Tien and it does explain a lot of things.

"Mai waifu."

Nonsense, all we need are more characters spamming the same moves they've used in the past, more references to past events in Dragon Ball Z, and more reused animation.
Dare I say, this is Dragon Ball as you truly imagined it.
A lazy millennial who's good at what he does.
