So I'm up to the fight with Pure Boo in Kai and, aside from Goku being SSJ2, I have no problems with this padding because it's fucking awesome. Also, this is the song they use for part of the fight and it's easily the hypest song in the international version.

EDIT: Of course, as soon as I say that, the next episode opens with the worst kind of filler that's made even worse because it's referencing previous filler that had been cut from Kai. Anyone who has Kai as their first exposure to Dragon Ball would have no idea what they're talking about. The smart ones would also be wondering why Vegeta needed to be given his body and his soul would have been purified within 24 hours of his death while villains who were killed years ago not only have their bodies but also haven't been purified.

Welp. Finally finished Kai (more or less) and caught the dub of Super Episode 28 (the first of the U6 Saga). It was... actually really enjoyable. I was pleasantly surprised.

No, it's the one where Champa and Vados arrive on Beerus' planet, we learn about the Super Dragon Balls, and the tournament is set up.

So one thing I'm confused on: just who has the most creative control over Super, Toriyama or Toei? Heard different things from different places.

It's Toriyama (who writes the drafts), then Toei : Toyotaro. The difference is in the way Toei and Toyotato interprets Toriyama's drafts. And the interpretations can vary WILDLY — see how one particular character (who is introduced after the Champa arc) is handled.

What I'm unclear about is, if there is something in the anime that isn't in the manga, is that something that definitely was not in Toriyama's outline or was this a case of the anime following the outline but Toyotaro decided "no that's dumb" and intentionally left it out.

This song needs more love.

I think toriyama is paying more attention to what Toyotaro is doing, so I'd assume that if something that's in the anime isn't in the manga, it's because Toei did their own thing, as has been their wont for a while now.

Doesn't Toriyama encourage Toyotaro to do his own thing for the most part? How much he listens to that is unknown. Though I'd say the rather blatent things from AF aren't in the outline.

I honestly don't think either Toei or Toyotaro would actually deviate from Toriyama's outline. Toriyama is just too well respected in the business. Especially in the case of Toyotaro who's a Promoted Fanboy that achieved the highest possible position.

From what we have seen so far the outline is pretty vague aside from gags.

I wouldn't be surprised if Toyotaro is the kind of fanboy who would never dream changing his idol's outline too much solely out of sheer idolization & praise he has for Toriyama.

I think they really should try to follow Toriyama's advice & just do their own thing.

It was at the end of the Universe 6 arc that we got the interview where Toriyama encouraged Toyotarou to use his own ideas more.

Toyotarou seemed really uncertain about the idea.

So the episode of Kai where Vegeta sacrifices himself to try and take out Buu came on on Saturday, and I heard the part where Vegeta hugs Trunks before knocking him and Goten out wasn't in the manga. Is that true?

Ironically I heard the anime apparently cut out Goku returning the hug Ultimate Gohan gave him before the latter went off to fight Super Buu.

Now is that true?

@LSBK: I think what it was is the anime added Vegeta's speech before the hug, not the hug itself.

When asked on Twitter, a writer for Dragon Ball Super flat-out confirmed that it's not a mistranslation: Super Saiyan God will appear.

[up][up][up][up][up] Having watched that episode not too long ago, I can confirm that it's not true. Goku does return the hug but it's after a long pause and it's only for, like, half a second.
