Well, that seems to be the intent Toriyama has now. We can just chalk it up as more inconsistency on how he writes his title character.
Of course, if you're willing to go out on a limb, you could say that it's not so much that Goku doesn't leave himself open so much as that he's so far ahead of everyone else, that it just looks like he's not leaving himself open. They suck so much, he can be barely paying attention, and still be completely aware of what they are doing (and I could buy it).
But it's not stated so that's obviously not what's happening.
One Strip! One Strip! Toriyama mostly remembers the work he did in the early Dragonball chapters back when Goku was a naive, uncultured lope (because that was when Dragonball hit it off and was probably the most fun for him, before it really got big and he was working his butt off to get chapters out) - and from the last few parts of the series (because that's when he finally got to put it to rest) when Goku and Vegeta nearly threw a fight for the universe for the sake of honor.
Drawing from the earliest and latest versions of Goku's personality, his view of Goku's personality stems toward the dim-witted martial artist moreso than the experienced warrior he became in the mid-to-late portions of the manga.
Toriyama doesn't care and Flanderized the crap out of his most popular protagonist to the anger of Dragonball loyalists.

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!
I say, we go for both.
...How old is Marron supposed to be again? I keep losing track.
Edit: Also, from the emphasis on Universe 9 in the preview for episode 98, alongside the title, does anyone get the feeling that they are gonna be the firs to lose all their members and be eliminated?

One Strip! One Strip!
Are you saying he kicked the bucket before the tournament even started? Damn, talk about weak.
...
<Shrugs>
Now I know we all get our kicks out of these jokes, but lets not kick off a trend here.

Misinformed Fans/Edgelord: B-B-But Goku had always been selfish person who only liked fighting more than anything.
On a more serious note, that would explain why Goku's personality was 'corrected' from being an experienced fighter who cares for his friends and family and will fight for them as much as for himself to a literally being a parody in Super.
"Mai waifu."The same thing applies to SSJ Goku VS 100% Freeza. Ignoring all the padding and filler the anime added, it's perfectly reasonable that the fight took less than seven minutes (Freeza added two more minutes to the timer partway through).
If they talk in hyper speed, why can much weaker people hear them? The conversations don't fit in the times given.
Also, if you're ignoring the anime's filler and padding then you're not talking about the same version of Goku vs Freeza that most fans making fun of it are.

You know, before it was pointed out to me, I didn't even notice that the episode reused animation assets from prior episodes. Eh, reused animation is better than bad animation any day.
Some people are asking what's going on with Goku's white aura in the NEP, and I'm just like: isn't that just Saiyan Beyond God?
In the Awesome-Page for Dragonball Super was this little bit:
If the Idea really was, that Botamo absorbed the Damage than that really wasn't conveyed very good. Well, I'll still take that as Head Canon because it makes the most Sense to me.

Well, I can, if you want. But I didn't ignore it. I just skimmed.
