And now I've finished Mystical Great Adventure.

The version I watched didn't include the proper opening and ending credits, so I missed Goku and Krillin training and Bora's revival.

This movie proves that Yamcha's status as the Butt-Monkey was well in place way before the word Saibamen was ever uttered (though his fight with Hero shows that as well).

This version of Chiaotzu is more interesting than Toriyama Chiaotzu as far as I'm concerned. Sure, he's not a fighter, but he wasn't much of a fighter in the regular series either. In fact Toriyama just only seemed to include him just to include, and was as quick to shuffle him off the board first chance he got. Frankly, him being the prince of kingdom was a better chance for some real character out of him than what he is in the main series.

...The Arale cameo was kind pointless. Not sure why they did it.

Mystical Great Adventure has some good points, but I think I like Sleeping Princess of Devil's Castle a little better.

Next up, The Path to Power.

@Gojira - even though Boo seemed to power up when angry (Fat Boo's ki was hard to read, so we don't get full confirmation of that) it doesn't mean he'd bypass the limit entirely.

Evil Boo was less restrained, but still not completely free (as he was weaker than Buff Boo). Fat Boo is much weaker than Evil Boo.

On names: for me, it's a hybrid of Viz names and Japanese romanizations. Viz was a big influence because while I watched the anime when it aired before school, i continously reread the manga at the library. Stuff like Vegerot never caught on, because I spent a large amount of time on the Kanzenshuu forums where the Japanese names were more common. Especially in Herms' guides, since he translated from the manga.

But the biggest influence on this is probably K-zone, an Australian magazine for kids that had a lot of coverage on DB stuff that hadn't been released in the west. They regularly used names from the Japanese version because that's where they were taking their information from.

One quirk I picked up from there was using 'Super Boo' to describe Boo after absorbing Gotenks. A reader asked one of the DB columinsts what 'Super Buu' was since I believe the name was trademarked but hadn't been applied to Evil Boo yet. The columnist explained how Evil Boo would be formed, then go on to absorb Super Gotenks and be known as 'Super Boo'. This is similar to a sidebar in an old Shonen Jump which had "Boo + Piccolo + Super Gotenks = Super Boopinks?!"

Given that SS 3 Gotenks is referred to as 'Super Gotenks' (by himself and Boo) in the manga, I thought this was a simple but fitting name. And my fan nickname for Boo after absorbing Ultimate Gohan is "Ultimate Boo". I prefer that over the portemaneu names.

What's concerning me is that everyone here other than myself seems to have just stopped using SSJ as a shorthand for Super Saiyan overnight. Did I miss something?

It was less because he wanted Gohan to be confident, and more he wanted the fight to be "fair" for both of them. But yea, I will agree that what Toriyama says about Goku's character doesn't exactly with what he's written. And Toei kind of exasperates the issue by slightly altering Goku's character as well. Its' funny how Toei have done a complete 180 on their portrayal of Goku, whom was more heroic in the original Z Anime....and then they just took him in the complete opposite direction to align with what Toriyama wanted post-BOG. In short, I don't think Toriyama is really consistent with what he does.

And that is exactly why I have a hard time believeing that Goku is a moron who oly enjoys fights. When I first heard that Goku was just an idiot who only enjoys fights all those years ago, I didn't think much of it at first but it was only until Super that Goku started live up to his meme and became who everyone thought Goku was like.

Yeah, the fact that the kanji for Super Saiyan Blue's original name has been written as スーパーサイヤ人ゴッドSS in the past.

Japanese pronunciation. It's "Sai-ya-jin". It's an inversion of the world for vegetables (yasai) and the word for people.

But in that case, it's more of a suffix than a translated word on its own (to denote a category of people, like the English -an or -ese), so it's something that's even more necessary to translate as a rule of thumb than other words and phrases. Unless you were writing a sentence in romanji or something, it doesn't necessarily make more sense to write that way in English.

I've always watched the dub up until Super and have always shortened it to SSJ. Not... really sure why or where I first saw it.

[up][up]Basically all nationalities in Japanese are made by adding "jin" to the name of the country. Same with languages, just change it to "go". It's pretty straight forward in that way.

I've only watched it dubbed but I use SSJ because that's what I've always seen it written as ever since I got into it. I remember, back in middle school when I first saw it, I had no idea what the J stood for and neither did a friend of mine so we somehow got the idea in our heads that SSJ was some stronger form of Super Saiyan or something but was weaker than Super Saiyan 2. We thought it went SS, SSJ, SS 2, SSJ 2, and so on.

Yeah, we were kinda stupid.

[up][up] No. The Japanese actually use the word "American" for Americans thanks to pop culture osmosis. Or at least it's pretty common.

[up][up][up] 'Amerikajin' is from the US. The derogatory version would be 'Ame-koh'.

Not quite sure on Cuba. I would have to dig on that one, I can only think of one cuban in Japanese fiction and they never straight up said it anywhere in the work.

[up][up] As far as I can tell (it's the only entry I can find), the Japanese word for "Cuba" is, well "Cuba" (キューバ or kyuuba) so it'd be Kyuuba-jin.
