You all had quite the talk while I was asleep. I'll say that sometimes a joke stops being funny when enough people start to interpret it as fact, but also say that people are flawed and will be biased in their perceptions to begin with. Most of us are aware that Goku cares about his family, and largely makes the controversial choices he does for reasons either previously established in his character or forced on Goku beyond his control. Discussion this heavy is sometimes the only way to clear up the air, and reaffirm the reality of the matter.
Akira Toriyama returning to do a continuation of the series had been my biggest hope before it was announced. I had thought that if he came back, he'd put something out that matched the quality of the manga, like the other sequels and side stories and fan projects just hadn't been doing. And BOG lacked that. It had many elements that felt like they were pulled from a fanfic or one of Toei's works (and it turns out, Super Saiyan God and God of Destruction were attached to the project before Toriyama came in) and was overall underwhelming.
I mean, before BOG I simply had too high an opinion of Toriyama. Since then I've realized how flawed his writing can be, especially his recent works.
It's partly that there was ever a pedestal to begin with, partly that I don't feel BOG is a disappointment (even now, that I don't have such a pedestal).
not me, always getting fucked by the timezones

What all this boils down to is the simple fact that Goku's a guy who's ill at ease and only knows how to fight.
Personally, I loved BoG and it's up there in my favorite movie list. Like... Top 10. Maybe Top 5. It's certainly my favorite Dragon Ball related piece of media.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!Goku was pretty cool in Bo G.
Seriously the "I will not let you destroy my world" scene was awesome.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."
I will fully admit that the "Hero ~Song of Hope~" sequence is one of my favorite sequences in anything ever. It was just soooo cool.
Maybe we all just had too high an opinion of this series due to how influential it was to our childhood? It was essentially the gateway anime for us when we were younger, so naturally our opinion of it's quality was maybe just a bit higher than what the show had established.
I personally enjoyed Battle of Gods, but it does have a fanficy vibe tacked onto it. And then Toei being Toei decided to cash in and that's where we ended up with Super.
So yea, series is essentially a shell of it's former self at this point, only continuing by the graces of Dragon Ball essentially printing money.

A lazy millennial who's good at what he does.I actually like Goku better as a flawed character instead of the generic boring perfect hero. I HATE perfect characters.
And the fact that Piccolo is a better father figure to Gohan than his dad is fine, not every one bonds with their father like that, it is a massive plus for Piccolo's character.
Some parts of Super I actually like better than Z as they are taking more opportunities for character moments and comedy which helps compliment the fighting. Other parts though not so much.

That was more or less my intention.
How? The only solo interaction that Piccolo has had with Gohan are the ~6 months they spent training together for the arrival of Nappa and Vegeta and he spent most of what time we saw being an asshole. After that, most of Gohan's time is spent with other people including his dad. The only moment after the Saiyan Saga is Gohan asking Piccolo to make him a gi like his for the Cell Games. It's only the fandom and Super that paints Piccolo into being some kind of glorious father figure that he never really was.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!Piccoro not understanding Gohand's thought process as he was fighting Cell probably says more about him than what was actually shown.

Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.I wouldn't say so, considering I never really got into dragon ball until my teen years. I genuinely think Dragon Ball is well-written, even if some aspects are a mess when viewed closely.
I also think that there's dissonance between what Toriyama says he writes and what he actually writes, as well as believe that Super did cause a dip in quality for the series.
"There's not a girl alive who wouldn't be happy being called cute." ~Tamamo-no-MaeGoku sacrificed himself so Piccolo could kill Raditz who had kidnapped Gohan. Goku sacrificed himself again in order to stop Cell from blowing up the Earth. Piccolo sacrificing himself to save Gohan was a great moment for his character but it's not really indicative of the topic of conversation.

I've been comfortable critiquing the series even before BoG massively shattered the pedestal I had for Toriyama.
Dude was voted onto a list of best anime dads in a poll done by Funimation/Madman/someone like that. You simply can't argue with that.
You literally just gave an example of that.
