This is an old video, but watching it, alongside my own greater understanding of Chi-Chi compared to when I first started watching the series, I can't help but wonder what things would be like if Toriyama had cared about Chi-chi a little bit more than he did.
In fact, I sometimes think that, outside of creating Gohan and Goten, nothing was really added to either Goku or Chi-chi's characters by marrying them (though it's been interesting to see a shonnen character not only get married, but have children and grand-children) since, for most series, that'd be the end of their story when they become parents.
I'm rather torn on the whole thing to be honest.
One Strip! One Strip!@felipe: Goku will tell Frieza not to use hotlinked images? I didn't know he cared about them that much.
De Romanīs, lingua Latina gloriosa non fuī.
x4 Nothing was added because nothing was there to begin with. Chi-Chi only wanted to marry Goku because Goku tapped her crotch with his foot and then promised to marry her even though he had no idea what that was. Goku agreed to marry Chi-Chi only because it was a promise he had made, even though he didn't terribly remember the promise or even Chi-Chi.
...Right. I feel like I had something to say to that directly, but I seem to have forgotten it.
I agree with you there was nothing there in the first place comment.
Really, if he didn't want to draw her, then just don't fricking draw her. Is it a waste because he just got bored of her? I think so, but I think every character has potential, and it's up to the writer to realize it, but if you don't have anything you want to do with them, then just write them out and keep them there.
One Strip! One Strip! Can she be nicer at least get with the times? She could also do with being less of a educational mom.
Its annoying how she's forcing this standard of normalcy in a family where that is completely impossible. I feel like punching her every time she complains bout something.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."![]()
That too.
There were so many ways he could have gone with her, but instead he chose shrewish harpy.
I mean, I get that she doesn't want her son to get involved in death battles and all, but did she have to completely throw out Martial Arts (which is a part of her family, her husband's family, and the family of her granddaughter)?
It seems like it's something invented to make her more of an obstacle than anything else.
She finally lets go of that by the Buu arc (with training Goten herself) but it comes back in full swing in Super.
Edit: This is true. I think we posited before that she's just trying to enforce how she thinks married life should be.

One Strip! One Strip!
I don't really hate her. In fact, I think it's incredibly sad that she has a small role. She's the wife of the Main character. Those kind of characters are usually at least a little important in some way.
One Strip! One Strip! She drains the fun out of any scenario she's in, even if she doesn't deserve to be hated she is annoying as fuck. It is better to forget she exists really.
That episode where she basically kidnaps Pan from her dad & granddad & how she wouldn't let Goku do a little training even after working over 6 months like a good husband was just horrible.
Goku may be a brain-dead battle-monger but the guy who saved the Earth multiple times deserves way better.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."He deserves a nagging wife, right?
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.I blame Toriyama's Writing by the Seat of Your Pants style and original focus on gags than action for Chi Chi's current characterization. That, and I think it may be a touch Freudian.......
DAMMIT MARK, STOP HITTING HELPY!!Chi-Chi is the only one willing to stay with Goku besides Bulma. Goku's daily routine besides saving the world is training and waiting for dinner, and Chi-Chi has to cook for three Saiyans before Gohan got married. Goku doesn't care about sex or love, so Chi-Chi is the only way for Toriyama to make Goku's children exist.
Also, didn't Vegeta say that Saiyans like aggressive women? Goku probably finds Chi-Chi's nagging endearing.
As do I.
It worked, but maybe sitting back and thinking about what he wanted out of the characters might have been a little better.
I've said this before, but if he could do such good work by just making it up as he goes along, imagine what he could have done with just a smidge more long term planning.
One Strip! One Strip!Going off of Dragon Ball Super, they stay together because they both understand how their relationship works and are ultimately fine with it.
There was an entire episode centered around Goku wanting to go off training and hiding it from Chi-chi, and her blowing up about it, but when all was said and done she brushed it off like it was nothing because she knew he'd be back, and he knew she would know that.
Bulma and Vegeta have a similar situation.

Ya know there is some humorous irony in that Goku has a wife with a Saiyan-ish personality while his dad's wife, his mother is the complete opposite apparently.
She came off to me like a crazy person at the end of that episode.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."

To be fair, a mastered Super Saiyan form doesn't actually increase power or anything like that, it just decreases stamina drain. All this means is that, at some point Goku spent a long time in Super Saiyan Blue.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!
