That was sad, sure...
But it wasn't as effective as the Spongebob Squarepants movie...
They almost died.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.I seem to recall Videl outright screaming at one point. That always hit me hard, because it didn't sound like the typical voice actor yell of pain, but an actual honest-to-goodness scream. Props to Videl's actress for that one.
It's really rare you hear that from actors. The only other examples of a real scream I can think off the top of my head was Mikoto in dubbed Railgun S2 and Subaru at a certain moment in Lyrical Nanoha Strikers.
I remember being fairly horrified reading it when I was like 8 or 9. The part I remember most is Spopovich hitting her out of the ring, only to grab her ankle and yank her back in to continue the beating. Also, Videl breaking Spopovich's spine. To this day, I take that moment as proof that Videl was the superior fighter in that battle, and she only lost because of bullshit magical steroids.
Also, was anyone else more than a little disappointed that none of Babidi's non-Buu minions showed that level of insane physical recuperation after Spopovich?
Randomness just brought up how all of Babidi's minions just normal died...
it was kind of lame...
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice. My inner Power Rangers fan was overjoyed when an explosion happened after The Pride Troopers Badass Boast. I'm really liking them so far.
Also, Brolyna is not from Universe 11: Crisis averted.
Next step: Her being a princess and be named either Sadal like the planet, or Colly. And not being related to Cabba.
To win, you need to adapt, and to adapt, you need to be able to laugh away all the restraints. Everything holding you back. Was there ever any evidence at all that she would be from U11, or was that just Wild Mass Guessing?
She appeared with the Four Pride Trooper members on the opening sequence, and wears red. She also appeared very close to Dyspo in the syluethes part in a episode.

And I don't even mean in the Unfortunate Implications department. The way a lot of people talk about it, I find it hard to believe they'd react the same way if it was Mr. Satan's teenaged son, even if they still wouldn't like it.

That seems very backwards to me.
Like, on the one hand I get how the fight itself can be seen as discriminatory toward women, even though I disagree - but if the issue is seeing a woman combatant getting beat down in a way that a male character in the same situation would, that seems incredibly backward.
A little of both honestly. I know why it's there but it particularly doesn't make sense in Dragon Ball where even children fight. And the attitude hadn't come up before, which is what makes it so strange.

She also wasn't the one getting wrecked...
But her beatdown of Veggie wasn't that brutal by comparison...

Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.I think plenty of fights have had that level of brutality. Like, Piccolo Junior was outright torturing Goku toward the end of that fight, and he became a good guy in the next story arc.
There have also been a sleuth of gory deaths which are worse than that kind of beating. Hell, Vegeta's beating against Freeza is way worse than this because he was left to slowly die.
I can understand how it kind of went nowhere in the end, however I doubt Satan/Gohan beating Spopovich would have made it better. That's like a non-lethal version of fridging. I can't remember if we have a trope for that - but girl getting hurt so the guy can look good avenging her? I don't think adding that would make it better.
Furthermore, I see people often say that it should have lead to Videl becoming stronger or bouncing back, but that doesn't really make sense given the time in the story this happened (she's already miles behind the Earthlings, and they're completely irrelevant anyway). I really dislike Super making her quit fighting and becoming a housewife, but I highly doubt that is meant to be taken as a consequence of her losing here. I prefer seeing Videl as she was after she got healed - happy to be back in action, without any sort of resentment or bruised pride. I'd like to see her continue training and self improvement, without being motivated by wanting to get back at Spopovich or becoming a relevant fighter in the Z warrior's world.

Ranfan and Chichi. They didn't receive that kind of beat-down, but they were only treated differently by Nam, who was portrayed as being particularly prudish/sensitive towards Ranfan.
Yeah, plenty of fights had that level of brutality....
But 18 vs. Vegetarian specifically...didn't. Which is what I was referring to.
Breaking both his arms was the worst she did to him, but it was pretty quick...
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.Unless she was just stepping on the same arm, it's confusing enough as it is...
That's probably the case.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.I'd like to point out that Videl did not give up on fighting after her beating and, in fact, bounced back as soon as she was healed.
If anything, that fight proved she's a freaking badass, since not only did she refuse to surrender, she was ready to go chase after Babidi's henchmen the moment she was healed. She wasn't at Babidi's hideout only because she recognized she was just too weak to matter at that point, especially since she could barely withstand high speed flight.
I still think that Super making her a housewife is idiotic though. I mean, I know why - because Japan - but I still think it's idiotic at best and downright sexist at worst.
himitsu keisatsu seifu chokuzoku kokka hoanbu na no da himitsu keisatsu yami ni magireru supai katsudou torishimariThat's why I wasn't bother by it as a kid, and even now. Damn near every fight in the Saiyan Saga is, in my humble opinion, far more brutal that anything Videl went through. It just seems horrible to witness because she's out of her league and her fight takes longer, that's all I'm getting from it.

I admit, at the time when I watched it, I was just surprised they showed his head being turned around.
I watched the Ocean Group dub on YTV and they showed him with his neck clearly broken and stuff. I can only assume it got through because the episode aired somewhat late (though only at 9:00 when I caught it).
I taped that ep, and I still have that tape. It's pretty nuts to be honest.
