That's different. It's a joke scene from the early series, and the blade was too sharp to block and too fast to dodge.

If it's a joke scene, then the sharpness... wouldn't matter?

If the sharpness matters then we're treating the scene seriously?

If the former, fair enough. If the latter, Roshi was able to punch a hole through Pilaf's plane with the same stick. He's also fast enough to catch bullets from a machine gun and durable enough to take hits from Goku.

As for the thing with the Destructo Disk and Frieza's tail, the disk had been implied to be able to cut stronger opponents. Note that Frieza still had to dodge it.

But... in that event it's still hurting a stronger opponent. The point still being that we have an example of a stronger character getting hurt by an inferior opponent, and potentially more if we look past manga canon.

Frieza having to dodge it is him being aware of the attack, unlike Goku, and despite being at a level of power we assert should automatically nullify inferior attacks (like Gohan's when he goes berserk on Frieza) it still hurts him.

It's implied that it can hurt stronger opponents, but didn't it fail to so much as phase Cell?

[up]

Nope. She doesn't exist any more as far as Toriyama is concerned.

Well, ok, this is the anime, so it's not impossible, but I'll believe it when I see it.

In regards to what Roshi did with the staff to Pilaf's plane...it probably happened because it was funny.

I mean, there might be more to both, but at that time, Dragonball was more about it's wacky humour than anything else.

Not to be confused with 百合, which means "lily". This is where the romance sub-genre got its name.

First, Soble, why are you using filler scenes in your arguments?

Second, the scene with Chichi and Roshi doesn't support your argument in any way. Roshi wasn't caught off guard and tried to block the helmet blade. He just couldn't do so, because he was too weak. Roshi's power is obviously nothing compared to RF Goku.

The Kienzan also doesn't work, because the Kienzan is an established technique that can cut through beings much stronger than the user. The dumb ring laser was not established as that at all, furthermore, the difference between Kuririn and Freeza, while quite big, is somewhere between 10-20x greater. Nothing compared to Sorbet and RF Goku's gap. And finally, Freeza and Goku are completely different in mentality. Goku doesn't even leave himself open like that, and criticized Freeza's fighters for doing so. It was a flaw invented for the movie, and all logic was dropped to make the scene work.

Yes, we have examples of weaker opponents hurting stronger opponents. No, that does not mean any weaker opponent can hurt any stronger opponent, and it does not justify every instance of this happening.

To be fair, with how the rules of the setting work, I'm fairly sure Trunks can split a planet in half with just his sword.

So it's not that stupid to try to block a blade with a wooden cane.

It's implied that it can hurt stronger opponents, but didn't it fail to so much as phase Cell?

Well that scene existed to hype up Cell's Perfect Form. "Oh shit! That super special cutting technique, which we've seen cut through anything no matter how strong they are, did nothing to Perfect Cell! He really is on another level compared to all the other characters!" I'm sure now that Krillin is once again a relevant character, the Destructo Disk will be back to full cutting potential, despite Perfect Cell being so last season.

Hell, it cut through Buu, and, yeah, Buu can make himself super soft, but he can also tank blows from Vegetto without exploding into thin pink mist, so he's also super tough when he wants to be.

The Perfect Cell scene is also filler and likely won't be referenced again anyway.

Hasn't Super already referenced Toei filler? I thought the implication was that as far as the anime is concerned all filler scenes happened.

Only with cameos, that's not the same thing as trying to tie it into continuity like they would if the Perfect Cell-Kienzan came up.

Toei's filler isn't even consistent with itself, so I wouldn't assume all filler has happened even in the anime version of Super.

Toei seems to go for a "pick and choose" approach for counting old filler scenes, that's why I think they'll ignore that one for the sake of the plot. Though I'd be very amused at a "Krillin did a whole bunch of pushups and now Destructo Disk is sharper than ever before" scene.
