I think it's possible to comment on a certain region's media without necessarily commenting on all of the individuals that inhabit that region.

I think there is a certain kind of sexism present in Japan's culture. I think there's a certain kind of sexism present in every culture.

Well, yeah, every human is racist/sexist/whateverist to some extent. It just strikes me as somewhat hypocritical to say "The Japanese are all racists" since that in of itself is racism.

Calling on my lack of a degree in human psychology, fair enough. But it was funny to me at the time, thinking that a person would probably snap while watching their friends be assaulted. Goku, Yamcha, and Tien really weren't doing so hot - IIRC Vegeta and Trunks were the only ones even putting up a fight.

Okay, Tobias, cut it out. Re-read the manga, watch the show, do something. Because you have this habit of going on these rants about the series that I assume sound smart to you when writing them, but are nearly without fail always completely wrong. Like here.

Gohan does not know these guys as highly capable warriors. He knows that the Juniors could kill everyone but Vegeta and Trunks in one punch if they wanted to. He's not a moron. And they weren't "steadily losing" either; the humans and his father were on the ground, eating shit, getting stomped on, kicked in the ribs, or having their limbs broken. Piccolo could actually stand, but he still couldn't even touch his Jr and was getting the shit kicked out of him. Vegeta and Trunks were the only ones that were "steadily losing".

He's not a frightened child... well, he is, but that never stopped him before, like when Recoome beat up Vegeta and Krillin.

No, he's not. He himself already acknowledged that his father had no hope of beating Cell, and that only he could do it. He was even considering how to get angry to do so (even though he didn't even need to get angry, he was already stronger than everyone else with just his normal SS form). If that's not enough, Goku and Cell both outright told him that to his face. He knows for a fact that he's the only one who can win this. He already knew that before he even started fighting!

And people were already dying right now. Cell had just outright told the Jrs to stop playing around and just kill everyone, and Cell himself had already murdered millions of people a couple weeks ago. Goku told Gohan this. Cell was three feet away from Gohan when he yelled at the Juniors to kill everyone.

Anyway, unnoun, you're just completely making stuff up to try to demonize Chi-Chi. Goku was never implied to not know what sex is at age 19.

On female characters: favorite is probably Bulma. She was by far the most useful and three dimensional. I don't care that the started off as a bitch, because every single one of Goku's friends was a despicable person at one point, and most of them killed tons of people and/or tried to kill him.

18 is just the worst. All she does is act smug about power she didn't earn. She is never even the least bit useful, and in some occasions is worse than useless. She doesn't even do anything in the Buu arc other than get eaten by Super Buu.

[up] We may not agree on a lot of things sockpuppet1 but I do agree with you that Bulma is hands down the best female character in the franchise. Out of all the human character in the we've ever seen in Dragon Ball only Mr Satan comes across as a more organic, genuine and down-to-earth character.

She's the main source of comic relief in the original Dragon Ball and then in Dragon Ball Z she was arguably the only character who became smarter. Which is saying a lot considering in the original Dragon Ball she was already a super genius who could invent anything. Then she out does herself, albeit in a alternate timeline, and builds a fucking time machine. And if you count GT, she also creates a ''Blutz Wave Generator''.

As far as Android 18 goes, I only remember her alternate timeline version being very smug about her power. The current timeline Android 18 was scared shitless to face Cell, but could you blame her? Cell had essentially beaten her brother to near death and then he absorbed him.

I'll agree that Bulma is the best, yes.

And just because Toriyama never had any female fighters (apart from that one chick in the tournament) doesn't mean the work is sexist. He's not obligated to have them. You'd have an argument for sexism if he kept introducing female fighters and having them be utterly inferior and subservient to male characters. Also, 18 fucking trashed Vegeta and lolnoped him all the way.

I also like 18.

18 was quickly outclassed. Which seems to be a combination of sexism, the humans can't keep up thing, and the thing where reformed villains suck now. So three for three.

I mean, she learned the Destructo Disk. Her and her brother both gave energy to the Spirit Bomb that killed Buu. She should be able to train to get stronger.

I mean, Vegeta could have paid or back for the beating by the time he got that Ascended Super Saiyan thing. He didn't, probably because he'd have had to go through Krillin and Gohan would have gone Super Saiyan 2 on his ass.

I used to be on the whole "Dragonball Z is sexist" bandwagon until I was given good information by a friend. To me, it's only the Funimation version of the show is sexist, since they butchered most of the females and make them come off as b*tchy and unlikable (well, except for 18 and Bulma's mom). I do think it sucks how my favorite female fighters (18, Chichi, and Videl) were quickly Demoted to Extra. They should have fought more and they deserved better Character Development.

Lets face it, Shonen anime and manga aren't that great when it comes to female characters, especially if they're fighters. Because it usually means five things:

1) They'll become an unlikable and unrelatable Mary Sue that never loses a fight and when on the verge of losing will resort to an Ass Pull technique to win

2) Most of their fights will only be against other female characters

3) 90% of the time they'll be either naked or wearing skimpy outfits whether they're fighting or not

4) They'll be involved in less major battles then you have fingers

5) She'll be hyped as an amazing fighter but ineffective when it comes to an actual battle

"18 was quickly outclassed. Which seems to be a combination of sexism."

What the fuck. She's an Android that has no real interest in battle. Besides that, every man in Dragonball is incompetent for anything other than fighting. 18, Chi-Chi and Bulma are the respective breadwinners for their families. Every character that isn't married has no home to speak of. No, it isn't anywhere near sexism.

Besides that, every man in Dragonball is incompetent for anything other than fighting.

To be fair, I think the only guy in the show who was better than anything besides fighting was Gohan, as he's a half-Saiyan hybrid and he achieved his dreams of being a scholar, and he's the breadwinner of his family.

As a fans of Naruto and Dragon Ball for many years, I can honestly say without bias it would suck way more to be a girl in the Naruto universe than to be a girl in the Dragon Ball universe. Don't even get me started on Bleach...

Yeah, I heard the way Naruto and Bleach treat the females is far worse than the way DBZ does.

[up][up] I feel like that statement is only being made because, if existing shows were evaluated on that criteria, most of them would lose. Bias.

And Gohan's a genius.

...And Krillin, 18 and Marron live with Master Roshi, Oolong and Turtle in Kame House. And the only time we see 18 winning any bread is when she scammed someone at a martial arts tournament.

We don't see Chi Chi winning much bread either. Just wanting Gohan to be smart to win bread. If anything, Goku, Gohan and Goten are the breadwinners, what with the way they dive into lakes and beat up giant fish to eat.

Yes, I know fish is not bread.

And I'm guessing the Androids can train to get stronger like everyone else. 18 can use Destructo Disk, and both 18 and 17 donated energy to the Super Spirit Bomb.

I dunno. I mean, Turtle probably just spends most of his time in the ocean, but he comes by the house often enough. He can probably sleep in the sand or something. I don't think he usually sleeps in the house.

...I'm surprised they aren't more concerned about Marron growing up around Oolong and Roshi. Also that 18 hasn't killed Oolong and Roshi since the Cell Games. That's the really surprising thing.

On the topic of breadwinning, Bulma's an heiress super genius. She was born already the single richest woman on the planet. Which makes the fact that she wanted to wish for a boyfriend when there were people starving even more ridiculously selfish.

Bulma is the 1%. Occupy Capsule Corp.

Hmm. It kinda does doesn't it?

18 was quickly outclassed. Which seems to be a combination of sexism, the humans can't keep up thing, and the thing where reformed villains suck now. So three for three.

This is true, though it is important to point out that she's stronger than her husband. That might not be saying much, but it is true. She's the strongest human female in the series, with Videl being second, and Chi-chi being third.

I mean, she learned the Destructo Disk. Her and her brother both gave energy to the Spirit Bomb that killed Buu. She should be able to train to get stronger.[[/quoteblock]]

I always wondered about this one. In theory, even if they had the same upper limits as the humans, they could still train, gain better fighting technique, and combined their unlimited Android Stamina with their human Ki to make them even more capable in battle. Hell, Bulma might even be able to improve their bodies. She did get a good look at 16, and before you point out that 17 and 18 are different models, Bulma's a genius who can build or fix damn near anything under the sun. Hell, she can potentially build a time machine. I figure she could give 17 and 18 a good upgrade if either wanted it.

I mean, Vegeta could have paid or back for the beating by the time he got that Ascended Super Saiyan thing. He didn't, probably because he'd have had to go through Krillin and Gohan would have gone Super Saiyan 2 on his ass.

Not sure why he didn't either, but maybe because after Goku died, he just lost interest in such things.
