It's easy to mock 'bad air' when you take it completely out of context. When you remember that 'bad air' is the air that's inside an Eldritch Abomination hell bent on the annihilation of anything that is just there, it's definitely different than just saying 'bad air'. Context is King.
himitsu keisatsu seifu chokuzoku kokka hoanbu na no da himitsu keisatsu yami ni magireru supai katsudou torishimariI like the Potara Fusion having an actual explanation for why it failed. It also really needs to be the Potara, and not the Dance, because this whole arc is about Mortals using Godly powers to take down a self-righteous evil God. Zamasu thinks himself above the mortal realm by virtue of his Godhood, but when he fuses with Black, Fused Zamasu is corrupted and starts to melt when he regenerates, because despite being an immortal God, he's being brought to heel by the mortal body of Son Goku inside of him, exposing his flaws.
To contrast, Goku, Vegeta, and Trunks are mortals that have tapped into Godly Ki which allows them to fight Zamasu, and Vegetto is formed with the same method of fusion as Fused Zamasu, and though Vegetto's inherently flawed also because mortals fusing with Potara isn't right, Vegetto is stronger than Fused Zamasu because the mortals fusing are more balanced and using the same Godly powers.
Basically, the Future Trunks arc is about a God, who got scared of the potential power of Mortals, went genocidal, fused with himself from another timeline, and was ultimately defeated by him own arrogance failing to take into account a mortal corruption within himself: the body of Son Goku. While on the heroes side, we have: three mortals who use the power and tools of the Gods in order to defeat Zamasu.
... No, the arc is not about that.
The arc is about an arrogant jackass being proven wrong. It's a story as old as time itself. It's not about 'mortals using god powers to take down a god' or the longer version you wrote. It's about an arrogant jackass getting knocked down all the pegs.

Not really, it still makes no sense in context sense.
Again, this "bad air" had no effect on Gotenks and he defused by the timelimit. Logically, the same is true for Vegito.
In context, there has always been evidence that the Potara Fusions work differently on mortals.

@Cortez
Goten and Trunks fused with a completely different method. You can say "oh the bad air didn't affect them, so it doesn't make sense that it affected Goku and Vegeta", but you're talking about two different things and pretending they're the same.
Potara is not an upgraded form of the fusion dance.
Yes, they achieve a similar result, but they do so through different means, the result is different and the requirements are different.
Not to mention the fact that Gotenks was in a coccoon in what passes for Buu's brain while Vegetto wound up somewhere around his stomach.
Furthermore, the 'evidence' you bring up of the fusion being different for mortals can be chalked up to the fact that in both other instances, one of the fusion partners was significantly lesser than the other, while Goku and Vegeta are equals (well, mostly).
You're making a ton of assumptions and leaps of logic to justify Super's dumb retcon.

himitsu keisatsu seifu chokuzoku kokka hoanbu na no da himitsu keisatsu yami ni magireru supai katsudou torishimariI get not being interested, but here's the thing:
You can change the topic without being whiny about it. Just start a different topic. People will discuss a different topic if you bring a different topic to the table.

Even before Super, I didn't really think "bad air" in Buu's insides made any sense for Vegetto defusing.
Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?
