As far as I know Toriyama considers BOTG and EOB canon. He doesn't feel the same way about GT.

[up] Toriyama has never commented on canon. There has been no official word on canon.

I get the impression that Toriyama doesn't care half as much about canon as some of his more zealous fans Game FA Qs thinks he does. I've never seen an interview where he actually disowned any part of the series either.

Some of the more eager fans are happier claiming that GT is invalidated because Toriyama had more influence on Battle of Gods and Dragonball Online, and more or less because they both ignore events in GT.

BOG doesn't ignore GT.

Anyway, like Saiga noted, there is no such thing as"the Dragon Ball canon". If someone tells you otherwise, they're either lying ("Toriyama said [something he'd never say]") or just being arrogant ("I don't like it so it doesn't count"). The canon is whatever you want it to be. Any personal canon is as valid as any other. Though there are some stories that quite simply can't fit together with either other EU stories (e.g. GT and DBO) or the manga itself (e.g. every single movie including BOG except 5 and 13, and maybe 9 and 1) due to continuity issues.

I don't see how 5 fits. It requires Goku to have gone back to earth after defeating Frieza, rather than spending time off-planet. He hasn't quite mastered Super Saiyan yet, so it can't be after his return from Yardrat since he had pretty much full control over the transformation by then.

The only movies that don't really contradict the main series are 9, 13, and 14, and only because they take place after it or within the time gap. And even then 14 has some errors as far as I remember, while 9 has King Kai dead, which was anime-only. I guess movie 8 doesn't really have contradictions, as long as you're willing to believe they'd take off to some other planet in the middle of their training for the Cell Games.

No, you're jumping to conclusions. 5 takes place in the android training. It just requires you to suspend your disbelief and believe that Goku would use a lower form and only transform after being nearly beaten to death. This is a typical Toei thing. It happens in every single movie. If you're going to fault it for that, you also can't count 9, 13, and 14. 5 and 13 are the only ones with no explicit continuity errors at all.

9 has the issue of Gohan stating he hadn't seen his father since the Cell Games in the Buu arc. 8 has Vegeta and Trunks still using Grade II and the world not being locked down in panic. 1 has Krillin not knowing Gohan when going by this film he should.

14 is simply loaded with continuity errors, and is completely impossible to reconcile with the series beyond ignoring huge chunks of the movie. It seems to be an alternate timeline where Mr. Satan succeeded in turning Fat Buu good, and Super Buu was never formed.

Are we talking about the same movies?

9 is the Bojack one, 13 is the Hirudegarn one, 14 is Battle of the Gods. And 8 is the first Broly one, but it's been a while since I've seen it so I might have missed a continuity error.

12 is the one where it seems Super Buu never happened: Goku and Vegeta are still dead, but Buu is no longer a threat.

Yes, those are the ones. 5 and 13 fit. 1 and 9 do if you ignore some throw away lines. 14 absolutely doesn't.

The difference is that Movie 12 seems to be where Goku/Gotenks killed fatty, while he's still around and a good guy in Movie 14.

How does 9 not fit? Gohan hadn't seen Goku since his death at the Cell Games, no?

He saw him in Movie 9 when Goku teleported in to give him a pep talk. In the Buu arc, he says he hasn't seen his father since the Cell Games.

Oh, yes. I thought you meant there was an error in the movie, not an error retroactively in the actual series.

Would a Musou-styled game work for Dragon Ball? Doesn't matter what saga, just Dragon Ball in general.

I don't think the Japanese have any concept of canon. Or, if they do, it has never crossed their mind at all.

People really just need to stop caring about canon period. The anime is its own thing, the movies are their own thing, etc.. It doesn't make one more valid than the other.

It comes up on discussion forums where people want to know exactly what speed, strength, and durability feats the main characters should be presented with. "Canon feats only" and all that.

[down]

My sympathies.

Oh i'm well aware of that. I don't read a lot of manga and back in the day when I wanted to argue versus on other sites I'd get shot down by trying to bring up anime feats. "Not in teh manga, not canon." Who fucking cares.

The anime and manga just don't connect as a whole. The anime often contradicts or outright changes events from the manga, so trying to get you to stick to the source material is actually a pretty reasonable distinction to make when you're trying to maintain a coherent understanding of a character.

It is my hope that someday we get a "true" GT where they use the same concepts (SS 4, evil dragonballs etc) and main arc villains (Baby, S17, Omega), but actually do them competently.

It'll likely never happen, but I used to think that about Vegeta getting his own movie. cool
