Trunks has all the makings of a Mary Sue - what makes him not one is that he mostly keeps failing and getting his teeth kicked in. What makes him compelling is that he faces adversity and doesn't give up, and that the plot doesn't bend over to make him look good.
When you make the plot bend over to make him look good, you're doing the same thing fanfiction writers do with their self inserts.

himitsu keisatsu seifu chokuzoku kokka hoanbu na no da himitsu keisatsu yami ni magireru supai katsudou torishimariI dunno. When Trunks has to snap out of his Heroic BSoD from his bratty 12(?)year old self, I'd say he still has intentional flaws within his character. Wouldn't really call him a Mary Sue.
Honestly, SSB Vegitto felt more pandering than anything else in the arc did as much as I enjoyed his appearance

Nobody cares about the sword thing. It's the spontaneous spirit bomb absorption thing that's stupid.
Also, I now remember what it reminds me of. It's almost beat for beat a rip-off of Shaman King final battle conclusion, down to cutting the bad guy vertically in half with a sword powered up by everyone hope.

Exactly.
Hao Asakura as the Shaman King for the Next Dragon Ball Villain?

Watch Symphogear"I'm Trunks, son of Vegeta and defender of the future. This is Bulma, my mom, the scientist who invented time travel. Fabulous secret powers were revealed to me the day I held aloft my magic sword and said, "BY THE POWER OF DRAGONBALL!"
-snip-
- When Cell says he's come upon thousands like Trunks... he's referring to a man who is currently glowing with golden energy, with spiked hair the same color, who literally just blasted him into the sky and followed him several miles away. Who on earth is Cell talking about?
- The way to complete this Call-Back is for Trunks, or Goku, to go back to the past and have to kill Zamasu there for some reason.
- Beerus killing Zamasu should've happened afterward. Everything else lines up almost perfectly.
- That would have been so much better. Imagine Beerus doing this
at the end of this arc, reasserting that he's top dog in the current storyline. It'd be a more definitive end for Zamasu and remove the mind-boggling paradox of Black and Zamasu's continued existence through the Time Rings.
- Yeah, screw it, headcanon. This is how the Trunks arc ended. Nothing changes much and it's much neater. When Goku and the gang head back the first time they realize that Zamasu did something but Whis and Beerus aren't available, so they go back anyway. Goku figures Zamasu wished for immortality with the Dragonballs and Black confirms, they fight, they lose, they come back, they fight again, they win, they head back, Vegeta gets the idea to kill Zamasu in their timeline to prevent history from repeating itself, Beerus performs a Fatality on Zamasu, and scene.
- That would have been so much better. Imagine Beerus doing this
- Beerus killing Zamasu should've happened afterward. Everything else lines up almost perfectly.
- Man I don't whether this is Zamasu's theme or not, but whatever this
song is it's so damn cool. They use it a lot but it always come in at the perfect moment, particularly when Vegeta got shanked. I mean this is a villain's leitmotif.
- ...these two fights are nothing alike. Not even the same techniques. Gogeta at least we knew he had a time limit, and Goku and Vegeta actually were being dumb by not killing Omega immediately. Vegito didn't prank Zamasu either. Omega Shenron didn't even go on a "mortals suck" tirade, and he was literally formed from "negative energy" made from mankind using the Dragonballs too much.
- Granted, I suppose Zamasu and Omega both have "memetic" status.

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!Goku and Vegeta weren't being dumb against Omega. They fought him for 5 minutes and were going to kill him... and then the fusion ran out early. They weren't expecting it. They were going to kill Omega at the 5 minute mark. That's 25 minutes before the fusion time should run out, they were being downright responsible.
Goku probably still remembers that the fusion dance is shortened by SSJ 3 - he might have assumed it was shortened by SSJ 4 and that's why they decided to off Omega at the 5 minute mark instead of stretching it more. They literally miscalculated by like, a second at the most. Had the fusion lasted a single second more, they would've killed Omega and defused as the Big Bang Kamehameha was killing him... though that would probably result in them losing control of it, which would probably be very bad.

himitsu keisatsu seifu chokuzoku kokka hoanbu na no da himitsu keisatsu yami ni magireru supai katsudou torishimariI thought the new episode was pretty fun.
The SSJB Vegetto/Mutant Merged Zamasu fight was pretty awesome. And hey, we finally know why Goku and Vegeta defused inside Buu, now we don't have to debate about that anymore. Also, Trunks' Spirit Bomb Slash was so fucking legit. That reminds me, Super Trunks is Trunks with the godly aura, and Ascended Super Trunks is him after absorbing the Spirit Bomb, correct?
Transformation names a gonna get pretty confusing from here on out...
Anyways, here's SSJ Time Patrol Vegeks.
◊
They fired a Kamehameha at Omega that was full of confetti.
Confetti.
That shouldn't even be possible. Yes it was Rule of Funny, but for sake of argument Gogeta literally decided to IT to some party store somewhere while no one was looking, steal some confetti, and then throw it in Omega's face.
Even Naruto used the Sexy Jutsu to get a hit in on Kaguya, it wasn't just to make her suffer a nosebleed. It was funny and tactical. Gogeta didn't have any reason to wait like Vegetto did either.
I suppose.

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!I'm fine with that part. Just would've liked the scene of Beerus obliterating Zamasu to be placed at the end of the arc. All in all the only part of this arc I'd remove was Black having clones that do nothing and literally fade into obscurity. Looking back the animation in that scene wasn't fantastic either.
And Spirit Bomb Slash is a cool name for an attack.
I think they regret making Future Trunks's hair blue because it makes giving him the Super Saiyan Blue hair a little less spectacular. I mean look at how awesome Vegito looked with it. Trunks not as much. Instead they just slapped blue aura on top of his gold aura and made his pupils vanish.
I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!One thing I kind of wished happened in the arc was Zamasu (the one that Beerus killed) to grow disgusted by what he could become and help fight the other two Zamasu's. Would have been an interesting concept to have Beerus, Whis, and Goku redeem somebody before he crossed the Moral Event Horizon like his future selves did.
Neither is a Mary Sue, though - because both have seen a fair share of failure.
himitsu keisatsu seifu chokuzoku kokka hoanbu na no da himitsu keisatsu yami ni magireru supai katsudou torishimariRandom power ups are part and parcel to everyone in Dragon Ball so calling out Trunks or Gohan for it would be stupid.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book! The fanbase is stupid
you say?
I mean, at least we're all fairly interesting individuals. And, I don't think Dragonball has incited any massive tumblr wars or encouraged any suicidal bloggers, despite all of the arguing about power levels, and the relevance of the human characters, and who the best villain is.
When you look at it that way this fandom is probably more stable than most.

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!

Yeah, and it was a good thing that he wasn't turned into a Spotlight-Stealing Squad, which h could very easily become, like he did here.
