Considering the fact that death is only a slight inconvenience for the characters at this point (and might not even be that now that Goku is a God), they really should use it more often.

Let's just hope that Zamasu doesn't realize that he can get out by screaming really loudly.

I the callbacks are overdone to me. They feel like pretty shallow fanservice, and they're handled in a way to what's very similar to fanfiction which does that kind of thing A LOT. I do appreciate that when they brought back Kaio-ken, they explained why it wasn't used with Super Saiyan before. It was an obvious answer but it's nice to actually say it instead of having Goku use Kaio-ken again without addressing it at all.

Here's the thing:

The way Toriyama has been working the past forever has been working amazingly well. Despite all the complaints anyone can level at Dragon Ball, that doesn't change the fact that it was, is, and will continue to be a money making juggernaut. Why should Toriyama change how he works when how he worked before worked out fabulously for him? Sure, it might make for a better product but Toriyama doesn't seem to be terribly interested in that.

If Toriyama was working the way he was back when he was producing the manga, I wouldn't be complaining. This has much less involvement, and I think the quality reflects that - you can actually see Toriyama's original script for Resurrection F online, and he even describes it as a glorified memo.

But you are right in that he's still going to get paid for it either way.

No. He's right. Chiaoutzu's deaths accomplished Jack and all considering that both times, Tien failed to make them mean anything.

That wasn't what I was talking about. Yes, his death didn't achieve anything in-universe, but it added to the tone of the Saiyan (and Daimao) arcs by showing how dire things are. Every death contributes to that.

Wow.

That's actually worse then in the anime. At least there, he got a chance to try.

Toriyama sure loves hammering home no-one but Goku can win sometimes doesn't he?

I mean, yeah, Tien couldn't be allowed to succeed, but for him to be foiled by something like that?

He probably should have bought some spares now that I think about it.

I really don't understand you coming to that conclusion. Ten not getting a chance to use the Mafuba isn't hammering that no-one but Goku can win any more than trying but failing is.

The more logical explanation for why he didn't have Tenshinhan try is that using the Mafuba would kill him. He wanted Tenshinhan to fail, but he didn't want him to die. So instead he came up with a way that prevented Tenshinhan from sacrificing his life to attempt it.

This way, he's implied that Tenshinhan had everything he needed to seal Daimao, it was just unlucky that the practice needed to get there also damaged the cooker. Seems like a fair trade off when he could have just made it so that Ten's practice wasn't enough to actually pull it off.

At this rate, the Shapeshifting Kindergarten Oolong and Puar went to will be an essential part of the conclusion of the next arc.

And yet Yamcha will never be an essential part of anything.

Edit: Not original or good, I know. But everybody needs to get a Yamcha joke out of their system.

That's fair. It really wasn't very good though. You got my expectations up for nothing.

Being a Yamcha fan, you must experience that a lot.(round 2)

That one was better! Though false; I'm happy if Yamcha is even on-screen. My expectations for him are zero, he couldn't disappoint me if he tried.

Eh, even Yamcha was useful at times.

Like, remember that time he beat the Invisible Man?

Or that time when he carried sick Goku back home?

Or...

Okay, those two are all I got, but that still means that Yamcha was statistically speaking helpful.

Well, then what would you call it?

He didn't exactly do nothing, though I understand the anime and the manga (as always) varied slightly in the execution.

Not being confrontational here (for once, since I'm still trying to steal your Pope hat). Just curious.

I knew it as Evil Containment Wave for the longest time. It's not implausible.

Not knowing that the Turtle Hermit is Roshi, however, is harder to justify. Even if you never watched Dragon Ball that can be inferred.

This song needs more love.

I did watched Dragon Ball as a kid. But only as a kid. Z overexposure with videogames (and a beautiful abridged series) made me forget A LOT of details, I only remember the basics, and that's because of Budokai Tenkaichi 3 and Mistare Fusion.

Enough to know what the Mafuba is, anyway.
