Nobody is saying otherwise :V But the fact of the matter is, Yamcha is weak and pathetic and its kind of fun to make fun of him because of it. Doesn't mean he's a terrible character, just a terribly unlucky one :V

I've been caught up in another argument and someone's saying that Tenshinhan could have just destroyed 18 with the Kikoho instead of tying down Cell.

And I was like, "But I thought the Kikoho didn't even damage Cell! It just stopped him from moving!"

But then I realised I can't remember any time they said that.

So, like...is there actual proof of that? Or was that just something everyone decided was most logical?

[up][up]Well, Cell clearly wasn't hurt after getting out of the whole so I'm going with it just making sense.

But either way, it's ridiculous, 18 was soooooo very far above Tenshinhan at that point it wasn't even funny. She probably still is.

The fact that he had no damage on him?

Anyway, there's one way we know he can't kill the Androids - he outright says he can't do anything against them after seeing 17 and 18 in action. Boom, done.

Proof that Cell was undamaged?

Well, if you look at him after he flies out, he looks relatively fine for being smacked around.

Kikoho literally had no effect on Cell, it was really just a minor inconvenience at best. Ya know, like a Mosquito.

hey, mosquitoes can carry harmful diseases

Well so could tenshinhan but his kikoho can't transmit them. He'd just die. Like normal.

I'm unaware of any time a mosquito managed to knock back a giant humanoid several feet.

Or any examples of a ki attack in the series that pushed a person around but didn't actually hurt them.

It's called relativity

Pushing back giant humanoids is meaningless in Dragon Ball - Goku's lifting cars in his first appearance.

Or any instant of a ki attack in the series that pushed a person around but didn't actually hurt them.

Then you don't remember much.waii Happens all the time, so I wouldn't be able to list every example of it. But we've had Freeza and (base) Trunks do it to Super Saiyan Goku and Imperfect Cell, respectively, Piccolo doing it to Imperfect Cell, Gohan doing it to Freeza... I could go on, but it's pointless.

Come on, guys. Just friggin LOOK at Cell. He doesn't have injuries.

Tien's just that weak to where even his Ki attacks just literally have no effect.

Freeza did it to Super Saiyan Goku

Base Trunks did it to Imperfect Cell

is what I said

With regards to Freeza and Goku, are we talking about the free shot Goku let him have? Because that barely counts as moving. As I recall, it sort of made him lean back a bit. Kind of incomparable to knocking someone back several yards.

There's also the issue of speed. Cell was never fast enough to maneuver around Tien's attacks or get up above before he could use them again.

"Tien's just that weak to where even his Ki attacks just literally have no effect."

We wouldn't be having this discussion if they had no effect.

No, I'm not counting that. I'm talking about Freeza using a kiai-style attack to knock Goku away before he mentioned he was only at 70% of his power. The Kikoho is also a kiai technique.

That doesn't mean anything. The Shin Kikoho is a consecutive attack, we don't know if there was any significant gap between each blast hitting. It looks that way in the anime, but that's the anime. Stretching shit out is par for the course.

In martial arts it's the yell you do when executing an attack

In Dragon Ball it IS an attack, it's basically a shockwave. Usually invisible, but there are a lot of variations.

Check the manga- hell, check the anime! Semi-Perfect Cell has spots of discoloration consistent with Toriyama's way of drawing bruises from Tenshinhan's Shin Kikoho. Cell WAS actually hurt by that attack, if only slightly.

Nappa and Vegeta have the exact same spots when Kuririn's attack is said to do "no damage".

Freeza has those spots after Vegeta shoots him in the back to "no effect".

They are consistently used as a side effect of being hit with ki attacks regardless of damage done.

Or you could interpret those instances as examples of attacks having done insignificant amounts of damage as opposed to nothing at all, as I do.

Of course it effected them physically, but it's not like it did enough to matter. Damage effects stamina.

It doesn't hurt their performance at all, that's what matters.

If Bra hasn't been retconned out of the series.

I hope not. Bra is a great potential character. That they'll never use, but that's besides the point.

True, otherwise he'd just be Chaotzu, the true weakest Z Fighter but nobody even bothers to remember him.

He's so awful, Toriyama never even saw fit to redesign or age him.

This is true.

Toriyama never even bothered to explain Chiaotzu but nobody minds because nobody gives two shits about Chiaotzu. Despite having about the same W/L rate as Yamcha, Chiaotzu doesn't get as many opportunities to fail, and thus he's less memorable.

Yamcha, on the other hand, is memorable for his Butt-Monkey status.

Krillin got to go to Namek. Yamcha got to die to an evil plant person thing.

Three of which were subsequently destroyed by Krillin simultaneously.

Yamcha got to go train with King Kai which surely must have multiplied his power level quite a bit just like it did with Goku and he probably has several cool new techniques as well.

Which might be cool if he ever got to do anything but, as it stands, Yamcha basically came home with nothing from his training on Kaio-sama's planet. His only combat role after this was getting impaled by Android 20, shortly followed by admitting that he's useless and permanently bowing out.

Any claims of Yamcha's growth from Kaio-sama's training are pure fanwank.

Krillin, meanwhile, was important enough to the arc that he has a quantifiable gain. His final recorded battle power was 75,000, well above 4/5 of the Ginyu Force. Nobody's ever bothered putting an official number to what Yamcha, Tien, and Chiaotzu were at when they left Kaio-sama's planet because they learned no techniques and were never relevant to the fighting again.

Your Power Level does not equal your quality of character. Bulma is one of the best characters in the series, despite being the weakest person in the entire main cast (aside from Oolong, Puar, and Marron).

This is true, but I have a hard time seeing what other qualities Yamcha has that somehow make him likable. His best feature is his status as a running joke and/or Woobie. I mean, I suppose he's kind of a nice guy when he's not cheating on his girlfriend, narcissistically showboating, or assaulting children for selfish gain.

I kind of feel like a lot of his popularity stems from the fact that he's simply not Vegeta, and people feel compelled to take a side over who deserves to be Bulma's lover - ignoring the fact that such a concept is stupid because Bulma is a person who makes choices, not a trophy to be won. Like, if Vegeta and Bulma had never hooked up, I don't think Yamcha would have half as many fans as he does now.
