Well, it's basically 'cuz Piccolo is getting upstaged by Goten and Trunks. At least that's what I think.

"It's liberating, realizing you never need to be competent." — Ultimatepheer@Bacon: Yes. That's why certain translations spell it "Frieza" even though that's just how the Japanese pronounce the English word "Freezer" (although no one could take him seriously with that name so they go with "Freeza" instead).
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!
That's funny, because that's also Articuno's Japanese name.

Goten and Trunks are also Super Saiyans. What doesn't make sense though is that their base forms are so strong that multiplying their strength by 50 can make it so they're stronger than Buu.
But I think Toriyama hand-waved as half-blooded Saiyans are much stronger than full-blooded Saiyans especially the ones born without tails like Goten and Trunks. But they also lack the lust for battle so they'll end up never realizing their potential.

Saiyans have some weird Lamarckian stuff going on, at least when it comes to strength.
I get that they're "supporting characters" but I wouldn't be really using them as in "support Goku in his conflict". Gohan is a superhero, he should be getting into plenty of conflict on his own. Krillen is a police officer, Yamucha a body guard, Majin Buu a world renowned martial artist, Piccolo the guardian of Earth's god, Tien a hermit, because we all can't be winners.
I'm not saying the whole manga or however Dragon Ball continues on should just be about their various adventures, but it'd be nice every once and while to see them have an interesting day at work. And I'd give them challenges they don't solve in mere seconds just to establish World of Badass. That's something that's been seriously lacking in the series ever since the Ginyu's were offed. We've had hints of it in Yo, Son Goku And His Friends Return, Battle Of Gods and Revival Of F but it's only slightly surged back as Goku/Vegeta have so few credible enemies now.
And I'm fine with Goku/Vegeta being a weight class too high to be bothered most of the time. Establishing things that can make the rest of the cast sweat would go a long way towards making Dragon Ball feel like the awesome fight world where awesome fights could be happening at any given moment if you look in the right place at the right time. A world you believe would motivate you to want to get better, stronger, every day.
Buldogue's lawyerI always thought Goten and Trunks were born with tails and Chi-Chi and Bulma just insisted on removing them.
"It's liberating, realizing you never need to be competent." — UltimatepheerOn the subject of Oozarus, did you know some believe that Vegeta was originally going to be the Final Boss of the series? Reasons include the fact that, at the end of the Piccolo Jr. arc, Master Roshi breaks the fourth wall to say the story will continue "for a little while," and that the power behind Vegeta (Frieza) isn't mentioned until after Vegeta's been beaten. Thoughts?

x3: Y'know, we have a trope for both of those.
