Manga/Dragon Ball

To prevent further derailing of the Bleach thread, how about a thread for this genre-defining manga and anime, eh? Frankly, it's weird we didn't have one already...

The reason we've never made one is because it's discussions on it only usually come up in relation to something else. The Dragon Ball Abridged thread tends to get derailed by general Dragon Ball talk, Bleach got derailed 'cause we started talking about the anime, but the discussions die after a while. A few of us figured it would just happen to this thread.

Still going to add this to my watchlist just in case anyone else is interested in talking about Dragon Ball.

Actually, I do have a question for this thread. Is it true that Toriyama repeatedly tried to make Gohan the main character, only to be essentially blocked from doing so by his editors and fan opinion, or is that just another exaggerated urban legend about Toriyama's editorial woes? At the very least, that seemed like what he was trying to do with the Old Kaioshin powerup.

That's a rumour. He didn't repeatedly try it, he pretty much succeeded with the Cell arc. He was planning on having Gohan take over as the main character in the Boo arc (he even says so in the manga. Literally as in he makes a cameo in the manga saying so) but he also said in an interview later that he changed his mind and decided that Goku was better suited as the hero.

Yeah, his editor during the Boo saga was very lenient on him. I'm not really happy that Gohan got shafted so badly, but I love the Kid Boo mini-arc and the ending.

There goes rumor about Toriyama that he was a chattle slave forced to write more and more by editors. While in some cases editors' influence is confirmed, Toriyama did pretty much what he wanted. I recall that Android Arc was somewhat longer due to editor's because he suggested introducing more antagonists. DR. Gero originally were meant to be 17 and 18, but Toribot retconned that. Then he later introduced Cell but his editor claimed doesn't look cool and suggested to make him transform. But all the rest about Android Arc was wholly his idea, naturally, and he was not obliged to listen to editors. If Jump author is popular enough he can screw opinions of editors as long as ratings are not too low, I guess.

This is true. In fact, the editor that wanted him to change the Androids wasn't even his editor but his former editor, so he had no reason to listen to him except that he valued his opinion.

Oh and his former editor did like Cell's first form, it was the second he didn't like which is why the second form wasn't around for long. He still told Toriyama Cell should be able to transform though.

Which was good as transformations made him better villain not only in terms of power.

One thing seriously bugs. Why some people I know keep claiming Kid Buu > Super Boo. SS 3 Goku was in the same tier as Majin buu before splitting to Good Buu and Evil Buu, and Super Buu is referred to be stronger than the former. SB would mop floor with Goku. Especially since he did not have any time to increase his power during the arc.

Kid Buu is said to be more dangerous, but only because he does not have any moral restraints left.

I prefer Imperfect Cell. He was creepy, Perfect Cell is just a knock off of Freeza in nearly every way (Far too much I Am Not Left-Handed, really generic villain, smug as shit, Too Dumb to Live, etc)

And yeah people saying Kid Boo is stronger than Super Boo or Super Boo with Gohan absorbed really gets tired, but people won't believe otherwise when the anime says he is the strongest.

Damn Toei and their defilement of canon. Even one game I played stated Kid Buu to the strongest. *sighs*

Anyone else reads Dragonball Multiverse? Contradicts sometimes canon ( I don't buy band of Oozaru killing Frieza easily) and some specials are horrible, but generally it is quite good read for a fan comics.

Which just contributes to people thinking Kid Boo is the strongest.

Yeah, I do, but Salagir fucks with the canon too much for my liking. Freeza's been nerfed, by the way. His second form only has a power level of 100,000 in DBM because he likes it that way.

Other way he trolled Frieza is the fact he supposedly got blasted by dirty space gorillas cause he did not transform in time. In every other special/chapter, he transformed right away, but Salagir skips that part because Saiyans have to win. Besides, canon Frieza would not be harmed by Saiyans even in Oozaru form. His base 530000 would be too much for them

Salagir released some of the power levels for the Saiyans and someone reasoned that they'd have several fighters at 90,000-100,000 plus a lot of them in the high 1,000s or low 10,000s (Oozaru is a ten times boost) so a combined blast could be enough to wipe Freeza out.

Unlikely. Bardock reached 10.000 and was believed to be near King Vegeta's power level at that point. So best Saiyan-jins of that time were in their 10000s. Salagir is simply taking too my liberty.

Indeed. He has the guards being higher than the King, hell even Bardock shouldn't be higher than the king, especially since in the special he didn't receive the injuries that brought him close to 10,000 in the first place. But Salagir just loves Bardock.

Because some haven't read Salagir's web comics yet and we should not spoil them fun of finding ridiculous parts on their own?

My other issue with DBM: damn Mary Sue filled U16 (especially Vegetto and Bra). I don't know how it could be possible due to their hax greater than Uchiha Clan's, but I fancy idea of original cast showing them their place.

Also, sometimes art is horrible. Vegetto and Bra's special drawn ugly as hell, Bojack special full of rape faces...

Yeah Bra is really annoying. I don't see why Vegetto has to be so involved with everything either. It's frustrating. Broli is by far the worst case though.

Yeah, increasing power level each second contradicts basic logic. Original Brolly was broken, but not that broken.

Broli was never broken. He's a weak shit compared to the actual fighters in the Boo saga.
