I think I could get behind the removal of the namespace.
@ Septimus: It's not a change in policy, although it's one which we admittedly haven't enforced as well as we should have, sorry. But it's been prohibited for some time.
I don't understand why it's any harder to enforce, though.
Welcome To TV Tropes | How To Write An Example | Text Formatting Rules | List Of Shows That Need Summary | TV Tropes Forum | Know The StaffBy "works we link to", are we still talking about fanfic recs or having an article on the work, period. I think we've all more or less settled on banning recs of blatantly pornographic fics or fics that depict illegal activities (by U.S. standards), but we aren't going to remove the articles on those works. We will however make sure that our articles are not gushy, creepy, or pornographic in and of themselves.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I don't see how maintaining watchful eyes on what are usually a few sentences about a fanfic is going to be lower maintainence than keeping our eyes on dozens of pages about fanfics with questionable material. At least the stuff I found on the FIM recommendations page is all in one place meaning I can swoop in and clear house. If I'd had to hunt across dozens of wiki pages it would have flown completely under my radar. You can hide a page better than you can hide text.
The term "Great Man" is disturbingly interchangeable with "mass murderer" in history books.I'm starting to agree with ccoa's suggestion.
We are basically arguing for pages if recommending a fic that contains content such as porn (and specific variants such as child porn) is fine. Some feel it should be forbidden, some don't (and sometimes it depends upon exactly what is the offense). Moreover, enforcing any rule regarding the content of the rec'd thing here seems to be a super-difficult thing (combing through the rec'd work, and reading laws if we use legality as a standard) that might not be worth its purpose.
ETA. To clarify an important bit.

"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanSo it looks like the plan is axing Fanfic recs and instead of it use the more neutral fan works index for series in general, giving an exclusive page for those series with a massive ammount of fanworks in the style of My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic Non Canon right?
"Yeah, it's a shame. Here we are in an underground cave with all these lasers, and instead of having a rave we're using it for evil."@Lola: By that logic, let's zap all reviews, since that's exactly what they are. Very short reviews in the end.
However, I don't mind either way. I'd prefer them up and we can zap/not allow any particular bad ones.

Quest 64 threadThe reviews? That's going... far. Too far. How would people use this to hide creepy stuff behind?
Guys, this is what I referred to as using a mallot when you need a scalpel.
The term "Great Man" is disturbingly interchangeable with "mass murderer" in history books.Hold on a second. Is the suggestion here that we are literally not capable of hosting reviews without gushing about child pornography?
I'm not even altogether incredulous here, but has it really come to this?
Welcome To TV Tropes | How To Write An Example | Text Formatting Rules | List Of Shows That Need Summary | TV Tropes Forum | Know The StaffI'm sure we have a rule for not having reviews with creepy content in it, and that the forum rules are supposed (I read such a comment once, but either I'm searching in the wrong place or there is no explicit mention of that anywhere) to apply there as well.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanAlso, we aren't talking about reviews here. About fanfic recs.
Also, which option(s) should go in a crowner? I feel that any such change would need only one option, but it's just an idea.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanEr-hem. That was not my suggestion whatsoever. I apologize for making it sound like that.
Anyway, I'd prefer just to zap the bad recs(or unreccable ones) instead.
Crowner sounds good.
Quest 64 threadI'm pretty new as a mod, but I haven't seen much trouble from reviews. They seem to stay pretty quiet.
Waiting on a TRS slot? Finishing off one of these cleaning efforts will usually open one up.Can we appoint mods specifically to the task of policing the fanfic recs to enforce the new rules? We might not even need them that long; once the hedgerows start getting pruned, the perverts will move on, and the whole thing will become lower maintainence.
My other idea is to start up a special efforts branch. We get a big group of Tropers together and go out and take down anything explicit and involving characters under sixteen.
EDIT: A crowner would at least be decisive.

The term "Great Man" is disturbingly interchangeable with "mass murderer" in history books.I've tended only to read reviews for things that I like, but barring the occasional troll review or comment section bickering, I don't recall them being trouble at all.

Crown Description:
There have been suggestions to forbid recs for fics that have certain content, namely illegal sex, in them, and due to the difficulties in enforcing such rules in practice it has been proposed to remove Fanfic Recommendations altogether.

This.
