Removing complaining, bashing and other negativity from the wiki

Go To

Inspired by this thread, I've noticed that this wiki doesn't have a dedicated cleanup thread for negativity.

As we all know, Complaining About Shows You Don't Like, Creator Bashing and other negativity isn't desired on the wiki, except in a few selected areas like reviews and several Darth Wiki pages (and even then, with limitations). And yet, it's one of the most common sins wiki contributors can make.

So, if you find a page, TLP or discussion whose content seems like a straight-up insult or any other bitching - including complainy soapboxing -, you might ask here for help with removing said content.

The sandbox for this project is located at Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining.

"PR nightmare that would've doomed any other game"

The sentence containing this phrase needs to be zapped ASAP, at the very least for being bashing.

DethroningMoment.Webcomics also has the same pitfalls DethroningMoment.Fan Works and Horrible.Fan Fiction fall into, especially personal attacks on the creators, 'this entire comic,' and 'I made an entry because I hate this comic.'

EDIT: Torch the Franchise and Run has some creator-bashing too, especially in the comics, video games, and western animation.

I would like to question a Fanon Discontinuity entry for Frozen II

  • For similar reasons, some Frozen fans have resolved to ignore the existence of Frozen 2... or if it does exist, it ends with Elsa and Anna's reunion after the climax, and certainly not with Elsa choosing to stay in Northuldra while Anna becomes queen of Arendelle in her place.

I get it, not everyone likes the sequel but this entry just felt like a rant to the whole movie. I would personally prefer if the entry is altered to one specific moment such as either they prefer an alternate ending or an alternate outcome fans where Arendelle is washed away instead of Elsa saving it.

I'm not too sure about this entry and with all the Pink Diamond hatred going on, I thought I'd better be safe and ask if it comes off as too negative. Characters.Steven Universe Pink Diamond

  • It's All About Me: Prior to her Character Development, Pink Diamond tends to think of herself rather than others. Most tellingly, tricking and leaving Spinel behind which according to Word of God was due to feeling the other gem was holding her back.

I have a question about this Legend of Korra entry on Strangled by the Red String.

  • The official partner for Korra turning out to be Asami can appear like this. They had a relationship that altered over the course of three seasons, starting off as being mere acquaintances and romantic rivals, but eventually developed a deep friendship with another. Come the last few minutes of the series finale, the two of them head off to the spirit realm while holding hands, their status as Official Couple sealed with Word of God later on. However, one of the big complaints was the seeming suddenness of the relationship, since, between Seasons 3 and 4, there was a time skip of three years where the only contact they had was the occasional letter. Combine this with Korra's decline in mental stability and wellness and it is not surprising it could rub people off the wrong way.

Now I get some don't like them so I am not saying we removed it, but that last bit is what gets me. I have never heard that being a complaint by anyone, because Korra was pretty much okay by the time they get together. Not to mention there where hints of it just look at the shiptease page and the comics fleshed out the relationship more. Or the fact that overall it was received well. Again I can see some people wanting to keep it, because some people didn't see it that way, but I think the last line is pushing it a bit to far into comeplaining for the sake of complaining.

I'm sorry if I am not asking the right thread. I just didn't know what other one to go to.

[up]I believe removal of any mentioned of Korra mental wellness is a good idea. By the time thd two got together she was both mentally and physically ok.

EDIT@Also, season 3 does include legit shipteased for the two. The feeling did grow between the two during the timeskip since Korra felt easiest talking to Asami during her rehabilitation.

Speaking of Pokemon, This is on FandomEnragingMisconception.Pokemon:

  • Do not say that the outrage over Sword and Shield is solely because of the National Dex cut. While the cut in itself was upsetting, many fans were understanding of the fact that Game Freak would eventually be unable to fit all the Pokemon in the games, especially since by the time of Gen 8, there were nearly 900 mons to catch. The fact that the cut had been used as an excuse for making better animations and models for the Pokemon, combined with Game Freak's long history of Idiot Programming, was what really made people angry and had fans judging Sword and Shield far more critically since expectations on models and animations had been raised, leading to the inevitable outrage when the Pokemon models and animations were shown to have made little to no improvement.

This sounds more like Hatedom-enraging misconception. Plus, misconceptions about the fandom/hatedom itself are apparently not allowed.

Cut the Pokémon thing, mainly because of a lack of objectivity (the need for the rage to be directed toward objective mistakes is the whole reason why Fandom-Enraging Misconception was renamed from Fandom Berserk Button), but also partially because of the link to a Flame Bait item (in this case, Idiot Programming) on a non-Flame Bait page, and also because it sounds like it's coming from the Hatedom instead of the fandom.

Cut the Fandom-Enraging Misconception for ROCEJ. The controversy is already succinctly explained under Contested Sequel anyway.

Also I'd like like to also cut this entry for ROCEJ, since it awfully sounds like importing the arguing onto the wiki as well in lieu of a documentary tone.

  • Critical Backlash: The backlash toward SwSh both before and after release was so intense that some portions of the fanbase have taken it upon themselves to point out that, legitimate grievances aside, the games are still nowhere near as terrible as the backlash would suggest and are perfectly good, or at least playable, games.

[up]The beginning of that example sounds like an attempt to sneak an Internet Backdraft example past IB's Flame Bait status.

Either way, Critical Backlash is about criticism from professional critics, not audiences in general (with proper Critical Backlash examples, they're saying the critics are wrong, not vice versa), and professional critics specifically don't critique unreleased works.

Action 52 and Superman 64 are still quite bashy. It almost seems insincere for the Plan 9 from Outer Space page to not mention its infamous reputation, but the description describes the whole plot and ends with a bunch of 1-2 sentence paragraphs with random trivia about the film.

From YMMV.Sponge Bob Square Pants:

  • "Funny Aneurysm" Moment:
    • The joke in "One Krab's Trash" where Mr. Krabs asks himself if he's really going to defile Smitty Werbenjagermanjensen's grave just so he can make money off of his soda drink hat before eagerly stating that of course he will becomes a lot less funny in light of Nickelodeon greenlighting a spinoff of the show titled Kamp Koral not too long after Stephen Hillenburg died when Hillenburg made it clear he didn't want any spinoffs of SpongeBob to be made while he was alive, an action which has resulted in serious backlash from fans accusing Nickelodeon of disrepecting Stephen Hillenburg's wishes just to line their pockets.

I don't approve of Kamp Koral either, but this feels like a common misuse of "Funny Aneurysm" Moment I had to deal with a lot on certain pages where people reinterpreted the trope as being "Harsher in Hindsight that could be considered Black Comedy if you put it into the perspective of a barely-related event" as opposed to "something that was originally meant to be funny now comes off as in poor taste because of a closely-related event later on" just so that they could bash something they didn't like. I mean I guess this is slightly better than some of the other misuse I saw in that the original event actually is played for laughs, but it's still complaining by trying to connect two barely-related events and using it to bash Nickelodeon. Mr. Krabs was stealing a hat from a grave so that he could sell it. Nickelodeon isn't stealing anything from Hillenburg's grave to resell, and even then I don't think that grave robbing and disrespecting the wishes of a deceased person are similar at all.
