Removing complaining, bashing and other negativity from the wiki

Go To

Inspired by this thread, I've noticed that this wiki doesn't have a dedicated cleanup thread for negativity.

As we all know, Complaining About Shows You Don't Like, Creator Bashing and other negativity isn't desired on the wiki, except in a few selected areas like reviews and several Darth Wiki pages (and even then, with limitations). And yet, it's one of the most common sins wiki contributors can make.

So, if you find a page, TLP or discussion whose content seems like a straight-up insult or any other bitching - including complainy soapboxing -, you might ask here for help with removing said content.

The sandbox for this project is located at Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining.

Yeah, it just lists a bunch of tropes without explaining a single one, nevermind the actual trope involved in the entry.

Most of the work examples on Sliding Scale of Adaptation Modification don't have any context at all, which I believe is because people can't decide if it's a trope or an index.

[up] But that's written like an example, and thus needs context.

And it's mostly an All Blue Entry; that thing hurt my eyes.

Could it be reworked into something a bit more organic? Like:

- Fly, robin, fly! - ...I'm trying!

The entry is also a gross exaggeration. Sailor Moon is a Type 2 or 3 adaptation, not Type 1 (In Name Only).

The 90's anime of Sailor Moon is a Type 2 example of the trope, but all the tropes that troper had listed should be properly explained, as Round Robin's showed in their above example.

Is there a consensus on Memetic Mutation entries that are just bashing the work? Like this under The Last Jedi:

  • "The Last Jedi was so subversive it subverted my expectations of watching a good Star Wars movie."Explanation

Or this one under Captain Marvel (2019):

  • "I guess Captain Marvel wasn't so marvelous after all."Explanation

I mean both of those are just "Thing Bad".

[up] Remove those for being blatant complaining, and neither of them are widespread enough to count. Memetic Mutation has been used in the past to list common complaints passed off as "memes", and I'm pretty sure the Captain Marvel one has been brought up on this thread and deleted before.

[up][up][up]I moved Sailor Moon from Type 1 to Type 2 and removed complaining, but I don't have the knowledge to add context.

The page for My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic S2 E8 "The Mysterious Mare Do Well" looks really complainy. Here’s some examples.

  • Jerkass Ball: The rest of the Mane 6 for some reason decide that not only do none of them not talk to Rainbow Dash before going through with their plan, they decided to go through with this before she let her ego get in the way of saving other ponies.

  • Hypocrite: Despite the rest of the Mane 6 reprimanding Rainbow Dash for her ego problem while she is attending a meeting held by her own fan club, they see absolutely no problem showing up to a parade held in Mare Do-Well's honor later in the episode

  • Show, Don't Tell: The main aspect that sevearly harms this episode, we only see the mane five casually commenting on Rainbow Dash's boasting, while the main argument for them assuming the Mare Do-Well mantle is that "she wouldn't have listened anyway" we never see them actually try to talk with her or at the very least consider the option. Even if she didn't listen, it would've been a nice gesture of faith they trusted her enough as friends to try talking with her first before resorting to more drastic measures.

  • Idiot Ball: During the Sugarcube Corner scene, the mane six praise Mare Do Well for her accomplishments in front of Dash. Rainbow's attitude to the conversation should've clued them in that this wasn't the best course of action and that maybe they would be better off actually explaining to Dash why Mare Do Well not being unnecessarily boastful makes her a better hero to so many people. Instead, they act like she's an idiot for not getting it right away and if what happens afterwards is anything to go by, they only succeeded in escalating the problem.

The first one was an edit of an example I did that was already on there labeled as Took a Level in Jerkass before I realized this post and that keeping up this negativity would be detrimental to the page.

[up]I’m aware that this episode is quite controversial. It’s just that episodes like this tend to be a complaint magnet, with natter oozing into the main pages.

[up]Yea sure, go ahead. I also want to point to the YMMV page of the same episode. Specifically, the Unintentionally Sympathetic and Unintentionally Unsympathetic parts of it. Both entries are giant walls of text like they’re rambling off their interpretation of the episode.

  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: Rainbow Dash tends to be favorably viewed in this episode by a lot of the audience. She saved several ponies' lives at the beginning of the episode without any expectation of reward, and only let her pride go to her head as a result of the townsponies heaping overwhelming praise on her. Later, as her arrogance began to hamper her attempts at heroism, Rainbow still tried to save people and failed more because she lacked the skills to handle every emergency on her own rather than because she was too boastful. When she tried to regain her reputation through ill-planned but still genuine efforts at being helpful, she got beat up by Granny Smith, then mocked and insulted by the entire town, all for trivial reasons. She then went into a depression, which none of her friends (except possibly Scootaloo) bothered to notice and help her with. Instead the whole town focused on praising Mare-Do-Well, who by this point was the prime source of Rainbow's confidence issues. For many people, this gives the impression the episode is fine with pinning everything bad that happened on Rainbow Dash, even when it appears the townspeople and her friends at least share part of the blame for either ignoring or exacerbating Rainbow's attention-seeking problems.

  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Twilight, Applejack, Rarity, Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy tend to be unfavorably viewed in this episode by a lot of the audience. While they at least saved several ponies' lives as Mare-Do-Well, they were never shown just talking to Rainbow Dash and explaining their concerns about her boasting being a problem, and instead jumped straight into a plan to deflate Rainbow's ego by mercilessly beating her at something she took great personal pride in. Their actions were very thoughtless and hurtful, actually making Rainbow's behavior much worse, and they didn't let up even when it was clear that their friend wasn't reacting well, even deliberately mocking her as being jealous, all of which made them seem like jerks. In the Sugarcube Corner scene, Applejack talked about how modest and humble Mare-Do-Well is, while she and the others bragged about their own accomplishments as the masked heroine, making them all look like massive Hypocrites. They directly confronted Rainbow about her bragging problems only after she discovered Mare-Do-Well's identity, leaving them with no option but to come clean. For many people, this gives the impression that the other Mane Six just wanted to bring down Dash because of envy at the attention she was getting, and that they failed to think through the effects their plan would have on Rainbow's attitude and only succeeded in making things worse.

Im going to try to fix The MLP episode

Show, Don't Tell@ The reason why the girls decided to go the Mare-Do Ware route in curving Rainbow Dash's ego is because she wouldn't listen to them otherwise. However, it's not shown whether Rainbow wouldn't have listened to their worries.

[up] Telling but not showing like they did is the opposite of Show, Don't Tell, and I don't think they even gave that as their reason, cut it.

Esoteric Happy Ending:

  • My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic ends with all creatures more unified than ever... but numerous fans didn't feel happy at all. The final episode reveals that 20 years have passed, most of the Mane Six have gone their seperate ways, ways and barely even qualify as friend anymore, only seeing each other once a year for a brief meetup, and Twilight is now as tall as Celestia, and immortal, meaning that she will outlive her friends and be cursed with immortality. The series-long theme of redemption and second chances was completely shattered with the final three villains (one of whom was a literal child whose mind was still developing) being subjected to a horrifically cruel Fate Worse than Death. Some land of friendship. And Twilight has taken on a pupil of her own, and most assume that history will repeat itself, meaning that Twilight will curse her with immortality as well.

1. 20 years is never stated and they meet once a moon (Which the writers stated has not RL equivalent. 100 moon may passed since the first episode and "Apple Family Reunion" which is implied to be around one year in Season 4.) 2. The point and Aesop of the episode is their friendship is a strong as ever despite only rarely being able to meet and they're fine with how it benefited Equestria, so it an intentional part of the Bittersweet Ending. 3. The issue of the villains is being contested here, but that's the prior episodes ending not this ones. 4. That assumes immortality is a bad thing, Celestia lived over 1'111 and never showed any problems.

There's so many unfair or incorrect assumption that I say cut, or edit down to just Twilight outliving her friends which is a legit point.

BrokenAesop.Western Animation got a FIM example added with many of the same reasons as this ATT query.

"** "The Ending of the End" has series-long theme of redemption and second chances completely shattered with the final three villains (one of whom was a literal child whose mind was still developing) being subjected to a horrifically cruel Fate Worse than Death. "

Kind of feel like that Fi M finale entry was written by someone that hasn't been a 25+ year old with a family and job. Seeing some of your old friends once a month sounds pretty darn good to me!
