Removing complaining, bashing and other negativity from the wiki

Go To

Inspired by this thread, I've noticed that this wiki doesn't have a dedicated cleanup thread for negativity.

As we all know, Complaining About Shows You Don't Like, Creator Bashing and other negativity isn't desired on the wiki, except in a few selected areas like reviews and several Darth Wiki pages (and even then, with limitations). And yet, it's one of the most common sins wiki contributors can make.

So, if you find a page, YKTTW or discussion whose content seems like a straight-up insult or any other bitching - including complainy soapboxing -, you might ask here for help with removing said content.

Speaking of Fire Emblem, found this while looking for Captain Obvious sinkholes.

On Fortune Teller:

  • Hannah from Fire Emblem: Blazing Blade is a rather annoying (though, thankfully, optional) example, in that, at times, she gives you a reading that the player could have determined just by looking at the map. When Hannah gets Put on a Bus, Nils takes her place due to his own Psychic Powers and despite being kinda Captain Obvious, he's quite less annoying at this.

Shadow Thehedgehog has this entry that seems a lot like complaining.

" Darker and Edgier: Downplayed. Shadow the Hedgehog is darker than previous franchise entries mostly in terms of aesthetics. For all its posturing, there really isn't anything in this game that comes close to being as unnervingly morbid as Gerald's diary and execution speech from SA 2. Most of the plot is only as grim as Adventure 2 (Black Doom's behavior and To Serve Man plan notwithstanding); the game's mood is primarily brought about by darker textures (even the springs look like they belong in a M-Rated game), environments, and the use of mild cursing and guns."

EDIT: DethroningMoment.Web Original has a lot of the kind of stuff that plagued Horrible.Fan Fiction and Horrible.New Media, where real-life people are troped/complained about instead of their works.

Does it really need the "downplayed"? The above write up makes it sound like a straight example.

DarknessInducedAudienceApathy.Video Games

  • The Sly Cooper series has been accused of this. In the beginning, it started as a lighthearted cartoonish adventure about a gang of thieves set in a world of furries. However, the sequel Band of Thieves significantly changed the tone with its Bittersweet Ending where Bentley is gravely injured during the fight with Clock-La and Murray quits the gang out of guilt. Though the gang reunites in the third game, Honor Among Thieves, and gains new members, the ending of the fourth game, Thieves in Time, left a bitter taste in the mouths of many fans. It's revealed that Penelope, Bentley's love interest, betrayed the gang to Le Paradox for a reason that came completely out of nowhere. note  And though Sly foils Le Paradox's plot, he ends up trapped in ancient Egypt. Carmelita is heartbroken and the gang is once again disbanded. This is even worse as Sanzaru has said there are no plans for another Sly Cooper game. The ending is so depressing that many fans don't even consider the game canon because they don't want the series to end on such a sour note.

This sounds like misuse since the complaint only applies to ''Thieves in Time", which I still think is misused since they are complaints against moments that are a fraction of the games otherwise tone positive tone.

DIAA is when audiences stop caring about the ending since it (seemingly) inevitably be depressing. Any complaints about the ending should not count toward this since they do care enough about the ending to be disappointed, and the ending isn't part of the narrative tone which this trope is about. So should anything in DIAA about endings be zapped?

Found this under Janna vs Forces of Evil fanfic YMMV:

Better Than Canon: Valor and SKL not only make no secret of the fact that they dislike the direction that Star vs. the Forces of Evil took in its third season (the former has no plans on ever watching the final season), but also have no problems stating that think their story pulls off a good number of ideas better than the show did. They're particularly proud of their version of Janna for being a more fleshed-out and interesting character than what is seen and known of her canon version.

Anon: I feel like you are being an elitist snob. You insult the writers of star vs and claim your writing is far more superior then theirs.

Valor: This is correct on all accounts.

I don't know, it's sounds to me more being one-sided complaining, as it's never stated if anyone besides Valor and SKL think that way.

That actually seems quasi-neutral in the sense that I can't tell who it's supposed to be complaining about, the authors or the source canon. But while I tend to feel like Better Than Canon shouldn't have examples, as things stand it seems to be an audience reaction, not something a fanfic writer can declare about their own work.

These examples on YMMV.Danganronpa 3 The End of Hopes Peak High School seem excessive and complainy:

  • Never Live It Down:
    • While Sakakura is a massive Jerkass to everyone besides Munakata and Yukizome, many people refuse to let go of him attacking Hinata while providing a massive Breaking Speech which provides a catalyst to him becoming Kamukura. This conveniently ignores how he bluntly says in the same episode that he did it because the Academy would kill Hajime if he investigated Natsumi's murder.
    • Good luck talking about Side:Despair without bringing up the brainwashing anime.
    • Despite the show's attempt at rescuing Hiyoko from the Scrappy heap in Side:Hope, some fans clearly haven't forgotten just how much of a Jerkass bully she was in Super Danganronpa 2.
    • The last episode of Side:Future and Side:Hope have this in spades.
      • After Tengan was revealed as the Mastermind, the only things people seem to talk about when discussing him is the Fridge Logic regarding his motivations and plans. While he is meant to be hated by fans, people hate him for unintended reasons.
      • Ryota's role as the Final Boss of Side:Hope. Ryota started out as an Ensemble Dark Horse, but the reveal of his brainwashing anime (and its role in the plot) wore him down into a Base-Breaking Character. He became The Scrappy after going along with Tengan's plan (not even bothering to question Tengan's motivations, nor does he seem concerned that a man he trusted for a long time just played a part in murdering a good chunk of his comrades) and being part of an Anti-Climax that made him an Easily Forgiven Karma Houdini. These days you won't find any discussions about him that doesn't bring up any of the above problems in some way.
      • The resurrection of the Super Danganronpa 2 cast (sans Chiaki). A faction gripe that resurrecting the entirety of Class 77-B renders Super Danganronpa 2's ending moot, and it's created a Fandom Rivalry between the fans of the first game (who are pissed that Everybody Lives when Class 78 didn't get quite as lucky and that the Class 78 survivors played almost no role in Side:Hope) and fans of the second game (who were stoked they were revealed to be alive and well and were happy that they got more screen time dedicated to them being Big Damn Heroes). In addition, Chiaki's fans are pissed about how she ended up being the only Class 77-B member to stay dead after the anime.
      • Finally, there was Kyoko's resurrection. Ignoring the rather casual and last-minute way it was revealed, many people call it a cheap cop-out to her death and/or started calling Makoto a Creator's Pet, believing that Kyoko was resurrected just for the sake of his happiness.

I've some concerns about Annoying Laugh. A lot of the examples seem to be people complaining about characters whose laughs they find annoying. Back in the days, it was considered OK to talk shit about the novelization of the Baldur's Gate series. Pretty sure this wouldn't be acceptable anymore with today's standards.

So is it OK if we begin an effort to remove the negative shit-talking on the novelization of that series, at least from its pages? I can try to do it if you'd like. It's not that overly big.

Well, there are some things like this in Imoen's section:

  • Suddenly Sexuality: In the terrible novels, Imoen turns into a lesbian for no reason at all. In the game itself, her sexuality is never even brought up.

It would be fine if we just remove the 'terrible' word.

The YMMV page has something like these:

  • Die for Our Ship: Due to the novelizations, Jaheira is the canonical love interest of the hero, but lots of players prefer Aerie or Viconia, so she draws some hate for it. Others would never dream of thinking the moron in the novels is our Jaheira, or that the novels can be thought to be in the same canon as the game.

Probably the last sentence could be modified to not call Novel!Jaheira to be 'the moron in the novels'...

  • Sacred Cow: It's a golden rule among the BioWare fandom to never criticize Baldur's Gate …ever! Unless we're talking about the (hypothetical) novels. In which case, it's the opposite.

Or that.

I think it is a bit like the meme 'Tsukihime anime does not exist' that fans are trying to pretend that it never existed (and pretend that 'if the hypothetical novel existed, then we can be free to be super negative about it'. It looks like a lot cleaned up the novel section earlier.

It's only a few in the pages now, but I could meet some of them in the existing trope pages. It looks like relics of the old site that should be removed.
