Removing complaining, bashing and other negativity from the wiki

Go To

Inspired by this thread, I've noticed that this wiki doesn't have a dedicated cleanup thread for negativity.

As we all know, Complaining About Shows You Don't Like, Creator Bashing and other negativity isn't desired on the wiki, except in a few selected areas like reviews and several Darth Wiki pages (and even then, with limitations). And yet, it's one of the most common sins wiki contributors can make.

So, if you find a page, YKTTW or discussion whose content seems like a straight-up insult or any other bitching - including complainy soapboxing -, you might ask here for help with removing said content.

Why are you asking?

If you have concerns about a troper ~porkyThegrumpiest, Ask The Tropers would probably be the more appropriate place to check. That's where you can report issues with a troper you might be having or, to go with your question here, search past queries to see if they've been brought up before.

Didn't know where to bring this up, but I felt this thread was probably the best.

This concerns the YMMV page for Pokémon: Genesect and the Legend Awakened. For those who don't know, the movie's pretty controversial for its depiction of Mewtwo. In the first film, it established that Mewtwo was a unique creation and was regarded as one of the more complex characters in the entire anime. For this movie however, it turns out there was another Mewtwo entirely unconnected to the original with a different personality and gender. And even though Ash should remember his last encounter with Mewtwo, he doesn't bring up the original Mewtwo at all throughout the film.

Now, I noticed that the YMMV page is formatted oddly. There's two separate folders, one dedicated to all the YMMV tropes regarding the Mewtwo controversy and one dedicated to everything else. I don't know if this was a mod decision or not, but that strikes me as a sign that people were just looking for an every opportunity to bash on the Mewtwo thing by dedicating an entire folder to it. Now I haven't seen the movie, so I don't know how well these tropes hold out. So maybe someone more familiar with the film and the backlash can see how well these entries hold up.

I think at the very least, we should remove the folders and merge them back together. But I'm worried if this is just a Single-Issue Wonk that's bloated the page beyond reasonable limits. So... anyone else want to weigh in?

I almost feel like creating a separate folder for single-issue wonkery stuff that has little to do with the actual content of a work is a good idea, because it gets it away from everything else. But that's just a snap judgment - I could be wrong.

May 15th 2019 at 2:52:54 AM

In any case, it be seen as bad Formatting. A while back, folders that were pre-release and released were seen as bad Formatting.

[up][up][up] I'm in support of keeping the Mewtwo controversy separate, because it overshadows the rest of the work to such a ridiculous extreme.

I say keep the separate folder on "Newtwo". While I think it's kind of funny, it kosher to list 4Kids Entertainment under "Perps resonsible" on Censorship Tropes? Also, is this entry on YMMV.So This Is Basically complaining/misuse?

[up] As for the STIB thing, there are parts of it that seem valid, though it can be cut down a bit.

[up][up] That example would fit better under Shallow Parody and should be cut down a bit.

The opening quote for Adam Sandler's page is pretty much a Take That! to him, you might want to replace it with a different quote.

Star Wars has a ton of character and work bashing, particularly for the sequel trilogy. And many of the examples aren't even proper examples; they just read like one-sided Broken Base or Base-Breaking Character entries. In addition, one particular example reads like Flame Bait, as it's basically complaining about complaining:

[up] Deleted. The page still needs a pretty big cleanup, though. That was just the worst of the examples.

These examples on UnPerson.Real Life sound like they're bashing the BBC and defending Chris Langham (whose child porn was not "relatively tame"; much of it was in fact very explicit).

  • Fans of anarchic comedy clowns The Goodies - and the three Goodies themselves - all suspect the BBC has done exactly this to erase a long-running spectacularly popular show from the 1970's that ran for the life of the decade. When the BBC has exhumed and repeated practically every other 1970's comedy show, including some which have far more spectacularly politically incorrect moments than the Goodies, this series (hailed as a serious competitor to Monty Python) remains uncelebrated and unrepeated. Perhaps the fact the show fell foul of joyless senior executives with a lot of clout has to do with this. One episode - and far from being the best - was grudgingly repeated on the show's thirtieth anniversary. And that's been it.
  • Comic actor Chris Langham has been airbrushed out of BBC history following his conviction on a relatively minor charge of possessing child pornography. (Even the prosecution conceded that no children had been harmed by Langham and his only sin was looking at some relatively tame pictures). Despite his not insignificant contributions to British comedy, including being a founder member of the Not the Nine O'Clock News team and several series in his own rightnote , Langham was portrayed as a temperamental prima donna with mental health issues in a BBC comedy documentary. Worse yet, he was a guest star in the fifth and final season of The Muppet Show, which is notorious for its season sets being stalled beyond season 3. What this means for his episode if seasons 4 and 5 do get released is up in the air.
EDIT: this too:
  • Comedian Michael Bentine, a founder-member of The Goon Show, alleged right up until his death that the BBC had blacklisted him for refusing to insert political satire he disagreed with into his TV shows. He also pointed to virtually his entire archive of TV work having been erased as proof of this. While this might have been paranoia - Bentine's extremely conservative views did not sit well with a liberal-left leaning BBC - after objectively considering what happened to Chris Langham and the Goodies, it does open room for wondering. The BBC also erased virtually every early Goon Show episode in which Bentine performed, leaving the impression that the Goons were only ever Milligan, Secombe and Sellers. Spike Milligan may have encouraged this, as "creative differences" were the cause of Bentine leaving the group. Milligan always underplayed Bentine's contribution to the Goons.

Does this example from WesternAnimation.Danny Phantom smell like a complaint to anybody else?

  • Fight Unscene: Economy animation causes lackluster fighting scenes in what is otherwise an Action/Comedy series. This improves somewhat starting around the second half of Season 2 due in part to storyboarder George Goodchild.

Oof, yeah. Besides "the fight scenes suck", it has nothing to do with the trope and is just complaining.

I found this Memetic Mutation entry under Fire Emblem: Three Houses:

Lost in Thots All Alone: After hearing "Reach For My Hand," a sizable number of fans immediately declared it the superior song to "Lost in Thoughts All Alone." Some even grew to hate the latter because of how excessively overplayed it was in Fates and found "Reach" to be a breath of fresh air in comparison. This resulted in video parodies of Azura's singing being interrupted and/or suddenly cut off by "Reach."

I have no idea how widespread this particular thing is, but the entry itself reads like yet another wonk about Fire Emblem Fates.
