Removing complaining, bashing and other negativity from the wiki

Go To

Inspired by this thread, I've noticed that this wiki doesn't have a dedicated cleanup thread for negativity.

As we all know, Complaining About Shows You Don't Like, Creator Bashing and other negativity isn't desired on the wiki, except in a few selected areas like reviews and several Darth Wiki pages (and even then, with limitations). And yet, it's one of the most common sins wiki contributors can make.

So, if you find a page, TLP or discussion whose content seems like a straight-up insult or any other bitching - including complainy soapboxing -, you might ask here for help with removing said content.

The sandbox for this project is located at Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining.

Do the multiple examples mean nothing?

About the Enforced Plug synopsis from earlier: looking over the page, it's not just that portion that's complainy. The real life section of the page is very complainy and often talks about how corny or intrusive the ads are, compared to the in-universe/parody section.

Are any of the examples not bitchy though. Like holy hell are they bad.

I mean, sure, we can give the page a rewrite. I just object on principal to saying it's not a "proper page". It's certainly not so bad we can't salvage it without a cut.

[up][up]The in-universe and parody examples are written neutral to positive, though I feel like they're more lenient on that half of the page because they're not playing it straight.

[down]I see. My mistake.

The Dragonball Evolution seems mostly OK, given that it seems to be citing the opinions of general audiences. If necessary, it just needs to be modified to sound less like personal opinion.

This isn't exactly complaining, but I don't know where else to put it. Recently added to repeat offender when it comes to things I have to report here YMMV.Sesame Street, under, shock of all shocks, They Changed It, Now It Sucks!:

  • The removal of the classic "Sesame Street has been brought to you by the letter ___ and the number ___. Sesame Street is a production of the Children's Television Workshop" and instead after the final "Elmo's World" there's a quick cut to the end credits where the Muppets sing a good-bye song during them.

This is near incomprehensible grammar wise, and I've never seen anyone criticise this before, so it could just be the troper's (~animefan42) weird issue. I am active in both the Muppet fandom as well as the logo community, which knowing others in said community would probably pay more attention to this than most even though it's not a logo. Permission to cut?

While it does look like a change that could cause outrage within a fandom, if there's no evidence of it, it can likely be cut.

I found this under the recap page for King of the Hill:

  • "Jon Vitti Presents: 'Return to La Grunta'": Luanne and Hank both face sexual harassment at a hotel resort: Luanne keeps getting groped by lecherous golfers (one of which is voiced by modern-day voice acting virtuoso Billy West) during her job as a drink girl while Hank is molested by a horny dolphin (which, despite feeling like some cheap human-on-animal rape joke that would be at home on the Simpsons episode "Homer vs. Dignity," does happen in real life) and is paid off with hotel merchandise to keep from reporting the incident.

That feels a bit like an unnecessary jab at that episode of The Simpsons but I'm not too sure.

That's because it most likely is. It is a recap page - its supposed to just summarize the events of the episode. The whole thing could probably be re-written IMO

[up][up][up][up] That's such a massive aspect of the show in pop culture (even named one of our tropes) that I'd be surprised if people didn't get mad over its exclusion. But maybe the people who would get angry just didn't notice it.

Get rid of the bolded part. And on the flip side, cut the "modern-day voice acting virtuoso" bit for being gushy (as much as I adore Billy West, recap summaries should be short, sweet, and objective).

Win Back the Crowd: After the rather divisive reception to Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard, fans clamoring for Captain Pike to get his own show have expressed great excitement at seeing their wishes fulfilled.

maybe it's my own annoyance at all the backhanded "this is so much better than Disco and Picard" compliments of Star Trek: Lower Decks YMMV, but it hasn't even come out yet? same for Author's Saving Throw.

From YMMV.Vikings Valhalla:

Fan Dumb: The reaction to casting African descended Caroline Henderson as jarl Haakon predictively stirred up disapproving reaction from history buffs and even more predictively from white supremacists. Several vloggers in both camps has created several videos about the real jarl Haakon. The issue being that most assumed the character to be a representation of Hákon Sigurðsson (more commonly known as Haakon jarl), while any one with access to wikipedia would quite quickly be able to tell that Hákon Sigurðsson was long dead and the character more likely represented his grandson Hákon Eiriksson. That confusion is pretty forgivable to a layman who would not know that there were 3 Hákon jarl (Hákon Sigurðsson's grandfather and grandson). But coming from people who claims to know everything about the viking age it comes off as very sloppy. Those who watched the show and knew of the figures would be able to tell that jarl Estrid Haakon barely resembles any historical or saga figure at all and it's very unclear if there was any serious intention from the writers to make her a representation of a historical figure.
For one, let's point out the use of a Flame Bait trope on YMMV. The entry is complainy in an unjustified way. First of all, Vikings does have a massive track record of Artistic License – History (and Valhalla is no exception), so mistaking Series!Haakon for whatever historical Haakon is far from being a dumb mistake. Many characters were placed out of their historical timelinenote . And I'm less sure about this, but I remember also the Google engine erroneously identify Series!Haakon with historical Hakon Sigurdsson. With that in mind, it makes no sense that the entry wants to be eagerly targeting white supremacists and know-it-all history buff. The main purpose of the entry should be first and foremost to correct a wrong belief spread among the audience. And since the audience is mostly made up of Norse history enjoyers who may be knowledgeable, but don't have the presumption of being experts, there's no need to immediately talk about white supremacists and fake history buffs. Especially with a series deeply susceptible to Artistic License.

Personally I'd rewrote the entry like this and put it either under Cowboy BeBop at His Computer or under Common Knowledge:

  • The reaction to casting Caroline Henderson, a woman of African ancestry, as jarl Haakon, predictably stirred up disapproving reaction from history buffs. Several vloggers created videos about the "real Jarl Haakon". However, most of them erroneously assumed the character to be a representation of Hakon Sigurdsson, who died before the events of the series. The historical Haakon who was alive by that time was his grandson, Hakon Eiriksson. In any case, when the series was released, it was obvious that jarl Estrid Haakon barely resembles any historical or saga figure at all. It's unclear if there was any serious intention from the writers to make her a representation of a historical figure.

From TierInducedScrappy.Pokemon GO:

  • Pokémon with horrible moves. Recently, Niantic seems to like to give new Pokémon incredibly horrible moves as if they know that they are horrible, downplaying even Pokémon with incredibly high stats. For example, Staraptor has the same attack as Machamp but was given Brave Bird, which is OUTRIGHT ATROCIOUS in this game. Another example is Melmetal, who is pure steel but does not have a STAB fast move, and its sole STAB is in fact, Flash Cannon, which is again, atrocious. Probably the worst one is Giratina's Altered Forme, it has induced a Hype Backlash thanks to getting Shadow Sneak as its Ghost charged move. Be noted that Shadow Sneak is one of the worst charged moves in the entire game and can invalidate even Gengar, should it have that.
Thoughts on this? I feel this could be less abrasive than this, and there could be other problems with it that I can't see.

The reasoning seems to be “these moves are bad because they are bad.” The example seems too general and just an excuse to complain.
