Removing complaining, bashing and other negativity from the wiki

Go To

Inspired by this thread, I've noticed that this wiki doesn't have a dedicated cleanup thread for negativity.

As we all know, Complaining About Shows You Don't Like, Creator Bashing and other negativity isn't desired on the wiki, except in a few selected areas like reviews and several Darth Wiki pages (and even then, with limitations). And yet, it's one of the most common sins wiki contributors can make.

So, if you find a page, TLP or discussion whose content seems like a straight-up insult or any other bitching - including complainy soapboxing -, you might ask here for help with removing said content.

The sandbox for this project is located at Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining.

IIRC, a few people were certain they were going to do something when that Yack Fest ordeal was going down and nothing happened then either.

People did get a bit too scared then, true. But this particular scenario deals with their favorite subject matter.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

Every work is tropeable, and we can even find motiffs or recurring themes in bad authors. Lindsay Ellis did so with Michael Bay.

Dakari-King Mykan gets his work analyzed too, and the guy has issues as much as Sonichu's author. But Sonichu is different. The work was locked, meaning we barely can make an analysis on it without attacking the author, the protagonist is the author so we cannot be fair without mocking her.

Like, I edit the So... You're a Cartoonist? page at times and try to remain neutral and fair with Andrew Dobson (who has been a victim of Kiwifarms as much as Christine), but Dobson is an author: his work discusses topics, and we can review them and point out the problems. Christine, for as long as the internet knew about her, has always been mentally unwell and living in her fantasy world.

I honestly suggest cutting Sonichu from the wiki, or at least downplaying it in the site. It's not worth the hassle.

I'm starting to suspect that this page has become a negativity magnet: Knights of the Otherworld.

Examples include:

  • Clueless Aesop: The central message of Ever After High was "nobody should be deciding your destiny but you", which the knights say they support. Problems come in from making the show about the princesses' new superhero boyfriends. Since EAH's mostly a nonviolent Slice of Life show, the Genre Shift gives its characters very few relevant things they can do anymore. Whenever something bad happens the princesses have to run away with everyone else, stand there staring in horror as their boyfriend fights, or be rescued. It ends up reverting the original show's aesop to the usual fairytale setup of heroes and princes and knights doing everything meaningful, and the princesses being the helpless damsels in distress the original show said they didn't have to be. The only major exceptions being a couple of hardcore tomboys like Gwen and Jillian Beanstalk.
    • As part of the above message about the characters controlling their own futures, the fic says that trying new things and breaking the mold makes for better stories. Except it embraces shallow fairytale tropes when it's convenient, too (Such as an obsession with romance, which EAH didn't have. Also Love at First Sight, with the knights being in dedicated relationships with their girlfriends after one or two meetings. Especially when the first arc starts setting up two riders and their girlfriends per chapter!).
  • Demoted to Satellite Love Interest: Ever After High was all about telling girls they could be in charge of their own destinies and didn't need to wait around for Prince Charming to do everything for them. Romance was a very minor story element, like in most Kamen Rider shows. Knights of the Otherworld is about their Prince Charmings doing everything, so outside of a few hardcore tomboys, the girls from the original show get their interests and roles in the story reduced to revolving around their boyfriends.
  • Hotter and Sexier: Than the original show by a long shot. Chapter 26 has five of the knights with their girlfriends on spring break and mentioning how they want to take their relationships farther. They don't, but they walk right up the PG-13 line. Briar Beauty even takes her clothes off to show her lingerie to her boyfriend to show him what he's got to look forward to!
  • Informed Attribute: During the first arc we're informed now and then in narration how Lance and Arthur are basically the head guys in the Royal and Rebel cliques because they're in relationships with Apple and Raven. The story doesn't really do anything with this, or with the Royal/Rebel conflict at all, with how it uses "destiny" to make sure all the knights and their girlfriends hook up.
  • Mood Whiplash: The fic keeps up the constant use of fairytale puns from Ever After High, despite being much more serious with its heroes vs. monsters storyline. More than a few times the silly puns show up in what are supposed to be tense scenes and derail their momentum.
  • Protagonist-Centered Morality:
    • There's clear narrative bias in favor of the knights sometimes, and the story tends to go overboard humiliating characters they don't like. For instance when Scout Huntsman's introduced, almost every scene he's in focuses on how pathetic he is compared to his image of himself. Especially with how much better the knights are than him. Yet when Gawain shuts Scout up by threatening Scout with his Rider form's axe, and then wishing he'd actually used it, we're supposed to see that as an understandable reaction to somebody so annoying. Instead of as really scary coming from one of the heroes who are supposed to be the ones who fight for all the right reasons.
    • Another instance is the way that at least in the first few arcs the knights like to ride through Mirror World and emerge through mirrors to make a dramatic entrance at social gatherings. The story even admits when they do this that it scares their friends because a Kamen Rider coming out of a mirror looks just like one of the monsters who've been terrorizing the city coming out of a mirror. It doesn't follow through and treat the knights as having done anything wrong by scaring their friends half to death like that, though. Especially with how Ever After High has smartphones and the internet; the knights could easily call ahead and say they're going to do that so they don't scare the living daylights out of everyone.
  • Show, Don't Tell: A recurring issue with the writing style. Instead of demonstrating what it's saying, lots of times the story will just tell you via narration how the knight and the cute girl he met are getting really well, or that the princesses looked beautiful in their outfits, or that a musical performance was really impressive. Instead of showing the couple's interactions to demonstrate how they're getting along well, indicating it was a specific character's reaction that a princess was beautiful, or that it was a character's reaction that a musical performance was really impressive. As the story goes on it even gets used near the end of episodes to assure the readers that what the knights did was morally right (and possibly why another character was wrong), or why we should just accept some minor character's assurance that they're right about something.
  • Story-Breaker Team-Up: Predictably, when superheroes get added to a show that wasn't about action, only the superheroes get to be very important to the narrative.

Yeah, at this point I feel like the entire page needs to have a once-over.

Found this entry on ThatOneSidequest.Genshin Impact.

  • The Inazuma update brought the "Sacred Sakura Cleansing Ritual", which easily dwarfs every other quest in this section so far as the most annoying sidequest in the whole game. For starters, despite being a World Quest, it's necessary to unlock a significant amount of the Inazuma map, including one domain and one teleport spot, unlike previous quests that only unlocked small areas, such as the hole in Sal Terrae. To add insult to injury, some of those places are blocked by purple barriers, similar to the ones that players have to use Electrograni to pass through, fooling people into thinking that those places will be unlocked as you level-up the Sakura Tree, while in reality, you have to do this quest. The quest itself is also absurdly long, almost comparable to some Archon quests, and is split in many time-consuming subsections filled with puzzles that make the whole affair extremely tiresome, not to mention that some of the puzzles may confuse the player, whether by its own rules (such as not realizing there is more than one Mysterious Shadow in the Konda temple), whether because it forces the player to find hidden caverns and spots in a map that's still new for them. And after purifying the five roots... you have a final battle in the center of the Narukami Island, which adds Boss Arena Urgency with the Balethunder effect, forcing the players to run around grabbing the Electrograni while fighting mobs, dodging the core's attacks and solving variations of the puzzles you had already spent your last hours solving, lest you want to spend your entire food supply. Oh, and after all of that, you STILL have to do more puzzles to unlock the last domain and teleport.

Personally, I find this to be way too complainy. What do you think?

It could use some trim, not only becaue of the negative tone but also because it's too detailed. I don't play Genshin, though, so I'm not familiar enough with it to determine what can be kept for clarity and what's expendable.

I think this got mentioned a while ago, but this entry in Pop-Culture Urban Legends under the Tabletop Games folder ends in pretty bashy way, I bolded the bashy part.

In TSR's Indiana Jones Role-Playing Game from the 80s, the copyright symbol appears next to the word "Nazi" on some of the cardboard tokens used, sparking a rumor that TSR tried to copyright "Nazi". The copyright actually applies to the artwork used... although TSR did become copyright Nazis in later years.

Permission to cut this part?

There are a few harsh entries in Teen Titans S 3 E 9 The Beast Within that I would like to address:

  • Karma Houdini: Robin, Cyborg, and Starfire do not end up so much as apologizing for their mishandling of Beast Boy's situation, even after it becomes apparent that his situation is a result of the chemical bath. Robin in particular stands out for directly provoking the second transformation into the Man-Beast. The only person who does apologize for anything is Beast Boy, to Raven.

But these entries that the other Titans (particularly Robin) did indeed face some harsh consequences for their treatment of Beast Boy.

And, as it was said in My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic S7 E26 "Shadow Play – Part 2", "When you turn away from your friends, you hurt yourself as well.

  • No Sympathy: Robin makes it quite clear he has little to no concern for Beast Boy's condition during the interrogation.

But was Robin even aware of Beast Boy's condition?

But this entry indicates that the above entry may not have been unintentional.

  • What the Hell, Hero?: Beast Boy gives to the team (mostly Raven) for always underestimating him and never giving him any respect.

And all of this makes it seem like Robin and the rest of the Teen Titans never truly cared about Beast Boy.

I remember that page used to be even worse. There was a Wall of Text entry for Artistic Licence – Law on the page, despite the Titans being superheroes, not law enforcement. I deleted it, but I had no idea what to do with the other entries on th e page.

Reposting because it got buried:

The description for DARQ includes this paragraph:

While its initial teasers had already attracted a reasonable amount of attention for the game's creepy Tim Burton-esque vibe, shortly before its release it became embroiled in a major controversy after its solo developer, Wlad Marhulets, revealed that Epic Games had offered him a deal to sell the game exclusively on the Epic Games Store, only for him to turn them down because he'd already promised the game would have a Steam release, and for Epic to subsequently refuse to carry the game at all. Marhulets unexpectedly and unintentionally found himself the public face of the gamer pushback against the Epic Games Store. Please exercise caution in discussing the DARQ/Epic controversy.
