Removing complaining, bashing and other negativity from the wiki

Go To

Inspired by this thread, I've noticed that this wiki doesn't have a dedicated cleanup thread for negativity.

As we all know, Complaining About Shows You Don't Like, Creator Bashing and other negativity isn't desired on the wiki, except in a few selected areas like reviews and several Darth Wiki pages (and even then, with limitations). And yet, it's one of the most common sins wiki contributors can make.

So, if you find a page, TLP or discussion whose content seems like a straight-up insult or any other bitching - including complainy soapboxing -, you might ask here for help with removing said content.

The sandbox for this project is located at Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining.

This example is from Literature.Spice And Wolf:

  • Too Dumb to Live: Great going Lawrence, Holo exposed the scam and you caught those grinning devils at the Latparron Trading Company trying to swindle you out of money for pepper. Let's continue to do business with them! Let's blackmail them to purchase all their dead stock in weapons to sell to the Lemerio Trading. But why stop there? Purchase more than what you can actually afford. Buy it all on IOU credit. Go right ahead, do all the talking so Holo can't put her lie detection senses to use. What could possibly go wrong? And while you're at it, have your prospective buyers at Lemerio Trading be said company you're taking the massive loan out with. It's not like the market might crash and land you in a world of debt.
It's so hilariously sarcastic that I kinda love it, but it definitely needs to be rewritten. My memory of this event is foggy so I'm not sure exactly how to go about editing it. Any other Spice and Wolf fans who might be able to help me out?

[up] That doesn't sound life-threatening, which is required for it to be Too Dumb to Live.

Also, from Characters.Final Fantasy XII, does the following entry need to be rewritten?

  • Too Dumb to Live: Really, Ghis — you just had to test the deifacted nethicite while on an airship, not stopping to consider just how powerful it must be if King Raithwall used it to conquer the lands all those years ago? With no safety precautions, or even knowledge of how nethicite actually works? You were asking for trouble.

[up][up] One could argue that it could be, given the setting. However, since it doesn't come to that, I agree it falls under misuse.

Tone aside, it's also not inaccurate. He really does blow up his own fleet due to his overt arrogance.

This is on Animated Adaptation:

  • For reasons nobody can defend — much less fathom — Roseanne Barr Pentland Arnold Terwilliger Thomas was given a Saturday morning cartoon in the early 1990s called Little Rosie. It wasn't based on her TV show, rather it was apparently based on her childhood and gave her magical adventures. Or something, it's not like those who saw it wanted to spend time admitting it.

[up](×8) The tone of that reads more like a What An Idiot entry than a Too Dumb to Live one.

[down][down] I was referring to the Spice & Wolf one, not the FF one.

[up][up] Get rid of those bashy sentences. I'm not too familiar with Roseanne, only knowing that she's a controversial actress, but the way that entry is written is honestly really bad.

It's Too Dumb to Live because it's karma for his in-universe arrogance. We're supposed to cheer at him reaping the consequences of his actions, not be frustrated at him making a bad decision.

If the Roseanne show isn't actually based on her show, is it even an Animated Adaptation at all?

Plus it was back in the early 90s. I'm not sure she was nearly as controversial then as she is now.

Nuke the complain-y parts of the Roseanne animated entry. There is almost nothing worth saving there, but try to save what you can.

YMMV.Nick Spencers Spider Man

  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: Peter losing his doctorate and his job as science editor at the Daily Bugle has been criticized as regressing Peter and losing the progress he developed under the tenure of Dan Slott. It's mitigated by the fact that the first issue addresses a major problem with Peter's doctorate, in that he didn't legitimately earn the degree, which was a point of contention amongst many fans, and likewise more than a few predicted this reversal of status-quo and disliked Slott's run for setting up Peter's eventual failure and comedown to start with by giving him unearned success.

The second paragraph just seems like a justifying edit and an excuse to bash Dan Slott's run. Didn't most people like this change to begin with? Making Peter work to get such appraise making him more in line what fans think he should be? This was mentioned in the Author's Saving Throw entry I think.

This will sound kind of silly, but there are at least two examples from Condemned by History that I wish to talk about.

The article mentions Johnny Test as condemned by history. I agree the show is bad, but according to a survey, Johnny Test is among the most watched cartoons of 2020 in Netflix. If the show was so reviled, it wouldn't be seen that much, right? The article is in Spanish, but the list is in English, and it shows Johnny Test was number 7 in most watched shows.

Likewise, as much as I absolutely despise it, Sonic Exe still appears to be popular with kids. I look in Youtube, and there are still a lot of people looking for it. Admitedly, the example is correct that it appears kids are the only ones who care about it, but still. Heck, the fan project "Sonic villains", who has a lot of quality for a fan work, decided to use the character (albeit heavily rewritten). It appears this little abomination still has a public, unlike Slender-man and Jeff the Killer, who have lost their spotlight once creepypastas ran out of flavor.

To win, you need to adapt, and to adapt, you need to be able to laugh away all the restraints. Everything holding you back.

Isn't the point of Condemned by History that it was popular at the time? Because JT was most hated while it was airing, mostly for being Adored by the Network. Now that it's off the air, people's opinions have softened to see it as closer to So Bad, It's Good at worst.

Yeah uh, the hate has died down considerably.

I don't think it's an example.

This was on the YMMV page for Friends: Took The Bad Movie Seriously

  • The infamous episode about the cat is universally despised, but damn if Lisa Kudrow's delivery of "Ross, how many parents have you lost?" isn't powerful.
  • One of the most universally despised storylines was the Joey/Rachel fling during the final seasons, but it's hard to argue that Matt Le Blanc wasn't trying his damn hardest at making his developing feelings toward Rachel seem legit.

Makes me worried it might contain a good amount of complaining, but I don't have the time to check it out. Also, Took The Bad Movie Seriously might have it's own set of problems, and the description is pretty bad.

Took the Bad Film Seriously (and Ham and Cheese, for that matter) definitely has an issue of how to determine whether a particular work is actually "bad." I think I've mentioned this before.

I do think saying the Rachel/Joey fling was universally despised is too harsh. I know more than a few people who liked the two as a couple.
