Removing complaining, bashing and other negativity from the wiki

Go To

Inspired by this thread, I've noticed that this wiki doesn't have a dedicated cleanup thread for negativity.

As we all know, Complaining About Shows You Don't Like, Creator Bashing and other negativity isn't desired on the wiki, except in a few selected areas like reviews and several Darth Wiki pages (and even then, with limitations). And yet, it's one of the most common sins wiki contributors can make.

So, if you find a page, TLP or discussion whose content seems like a straight-up insult or any other bitching - including complainy soapboxing -, you might ask here for help with removing said content.

The sandbox for this project is located at Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining.

All That is a sketch show; it's debatable whether it even has a canon. Though if the gags with Kevin were dropped in later seasons, the entry can be rewritten to reflect that.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

For the mandalorian. Does it count if it's Arc Fatigue. If its only three episodes over three weeks. That seems pushing it for that trope....

[up]Yeah, perhaps Filler or Plot Detour could be a better space to put that under.

Also, I found what might be something else; under Lethal Harmless Powers:

An early chapter of Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality has Professor Mc Gonagall explain to the class the many horrific ways Transfiguration can be used to harm (intentionally or not), since things eventually return to its normal form, and she forces the students to take an oath to avoid many very specific situations, such as never transforming things into a gas, fluid or ingestable. (Imagine turning a piece of steel into wine, serving it to someone, then waiting for it to turn back...) The fact that such a thing is never mentioned in the original books, and that preteen kids are instead blithely instructed to transform rats into goblets and other experimental cruelties is rather... unsettling.

Maybe it's just me, but that last sentence feels rather... unsettling.

[up][up] That last sentence, and the example as a whole, reads like it's written by a fan of the fanfic who enjoys all of the potshots it takes at the original books.

https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/article_history.php?article=Main.UncertainAudience#edit28328108

Uncertain Audience has an entry about Paper Mario the Origami King, which...is pretty complainy and brings up nothing positive at all besides saying it has "some fans", when the game sold well and received positive reception overall from most critics and fans.

"In a series already suffering from an identity crisis, Paper Mario: The Origami King hammers it further. Fans of the first two games were disappointed by the weird new battle mechanics, lack of incentive to do battles, abundance of live-action objects, and generic-looking character designs. The game tries to be Darker and Edgier, but suffers from severe Mood Whiplash instead — a scene about dealing with the death of a friend is sandwiched between jokes about moles doing yoga and riding in a shoe-shaped car to heavy metal music. The game doesn't come close to the deep story and characters of Super Paper Mario, and it also alienates fans of the previous game, Color Splash, which was known for its silly humor. The Origami King has jokes mainly revolving around outdated slang, random dancing sequences, and characters acting rude. The game also has a completely new puzzle-like battle system revolving around rotating and sliding rings, which simultaneously alienates fans of all five of the previous Paper Mario games due to not being rooted in any of their battle styles. While the game has some fans, it comes off as an awkward fourth swerve in the franchise's direction."

Found this under They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot under YMMV.Sonic the Hedgehog (IDW):

  • The Chao races of the "Chao Races and Badnik Bases'' arc are only featured in two issues of the story and then swept to the wayside for the reminder of it like an afterthought. What we do get is so quick, it barely warrants even being in the title since there's not much development in it: Cheese loses the first race, wins the second, then goes on to help some Chao imprisoned by Clutch, the end. Yeah it's four issues but it feel like they wanted to shoehorn Starline in so badly that they made a concessions and cut that plotline short.
    • Related but a rumor to the arc was that the writers originally wanted it to be a "Team Dark" plotline. However, since Sega claims Team Dark isn't a thing in this new Status Quo, it forced the writers to switch things up. Looking at the story beats and how Shadow barely even has much of a role in this arc, it wouldn't be a stretch if this was the truth and honestly would've benefited the story more if the team was still together as underhanded cases are their forte.

The whole thing seems pretty complainy to me, and I think it's also crufty. What do you think?

[up]I think the first part could stay if it was reworded (I'm one of the people disappointed there wasn't more focus on the chao races), but the second part needs to go no matter what due to being Speculative Troping if nothing else.

This FOS entry on YMMV.Sonic Colors seems especially complainy to me. The first sub-bullet point seems really unnecessary.

  • Franchise Original Sin: The Color Power mechanic in this game was met with praise, as the levels were designed specifically to accommodate it, and the Wisps themselves were both cute and important to the main plot. However, following games would bring the gimmick back with less than stellar results. The Wisps in Sonic Lost World were considered clunky to control and disruptive to the main gameplay, while the Wispons from Sonic Forces were criticized for coming out of nowhere and being so overpowered they remove any semblance of difficulty the game could offer.
    • The concept of Wisps in general supplanting the more traditional power-up monitors and character-specific abilities and equipment has left a sour taste in the mouths of a lot of fans, with Sonic Team's reasoning for them still being around amounting to basically "They're around because they like Earth." not helping smooth it over at all. Team Sonic Racing provides the more reasonable excuse for the Wisp's involvement that Dodonpa collaborated with them in order to build his cars and set up the tournament, though it didn't do much to warm the Wisps up to those who were already sick of seeing them.
    • The game's story being more lighthearted than previous installments was, at the time, considered a breath of fresh air after the Darker and Edgier games that came before it. There was also the fact that the new comedic tone didn't clash with the game's overall plot too much, and the game still had some genuinely impactful moments from time to time. As time went on, however, the games that came after Colors started relying heavily on this style of comedy to the point where, any time the series attempts a dramatic moment, it has a tendency to fall flat. By the time Sonic Forces rolled around, fans started getting tired of newer Sonic games not taking themselves the slightest bit seriously anymore, especially when it hurts their overall story.

The last point is a bit weird. U thought the Big issue with forces is that it tries to be super serious but fails leading to Narm rather then what's being suggested in that entry.

That's exactly what I thought about that example. I feel like just deleting the last sentence would be okay (it's off-topic anyway, both with the article and the paragraph).

[up]x4 Here's my attempt at rewording it:

  • The Chao races of the "Chao Races and Badnik Bases'' arc are only featured in two issues of the story and then swept to the wayside for the remainder of it. The Chao races happen so quickly, they didn't get enough development to justify their focus in the title: Cheese loses the first race, wins the second, then goes on to help some Chao imprisoned by Clutch, the end.

Found another one in the wild, in Fantastic Romance. It's a Twilight example, and while Twilight does fit, this is the ENTIRE example:

Twilight: Edward should have died in the flu epidemic, about 100 years ago.

Again, the ENTIRE paragraph. Not only is it pretty blatant bashing, it's a ZCE too.

Also, I had NO idea that that was how you denoted a work page instead of a trope page.

AdaptationDisplacement.Disney has this example:

  • Winnie the Pooh is remembered by some people more for the Disney animations than for the books by A. A. Milne. And Disney is working hard to keep it that way (much to the disgust of a number of fans in Britain - although curiously, other Disney movies based on British books escape that reaction in the UK). Which is sad since the main reason that Walt Disney adapted the books in the first place was because his daughters were big fans of them, and he wanted to help introduce the stories to a larger American audience. Also unusual, because (in the first film, at least) Gopher wants you all to know that "he's not in the book".

Should we rewrite the bolded part or do away with it entirely? Also I think describing the antithesis as "sad" is also dodgy.

Blumhouse Productions has some complaining. Some of it is just objectively describing the impact it's had on the horror industry, but then their trope section has parts like "Jump Scare: A disease endemic among Blumhouse movies." and "Nominal Hero: Especially seen in films like Unfriended and The Gallows. You can even argue that the protagonists in the former are Designated Heroes."

[up] Yikes. I'm not a fan of jump scares either, and I also think they might be a bit overused, but calling them a 'disease' is just blatant complaining. Also, Designated Heroes and Nominal Heroes are two different things.

I found another one, in How Is That Even Possible?:

  • At several points in World War Z a character notes that the zombies are impossible — not just biologically, but even from elementary physics (moving endlessly with no energy input.) And having waved to reality as it passed, the story carries on as before.

That last sentence might have been intended as a joke, but it really just comes across as complaining.

Scapegoat Creator

  • While Richard Garfield is largely exempt (he even had a card made of him with the art portraying him as Jesus) from the RAGE of the Unpleasable Fanbase, the current head designer of Magic: The Gathering Mark Rosewater is often blamed for breaking the game's balance.
    • This is especially funny because he's only the lead designer, not the lead of development. While design tries to get in the general area, it's really development's job to hone the balance to just right.
      • He catches blame for anything players dislike about the game, whether it involves card design or not! Price of packs goes up? Blame Rosewater. Bad piece of artwork? Blame Rosewater.
      • Well, okay, you can blame him for one bad piece of artwork.

I don't know if this goes here or not, but there's something very wrong with how this example is written. I guess it's the Unpleasable Fanbase mention and the First-Person Writing.
