Removing complaining, bashing and other negativity from the wiki

Go To

Inspired by this thread, I've noticed that this wiki doesn't have a dedicated cleanup thread for negativity.

As we all know, Complaining About Shows You Don't Like, Creator Bashing and other negativity isn't desired on the wiki, except in a few selected areas like reviews and several Darth Wiki pages (and even then, with limitations). And yet, it's one of the most common sins wiki contributors can make.

So, if you find a page, TLP or discussion whose content seems like a straight-up insult or any other bitching - including complainy soapboxing -, you might ask here for help with removing said content.

The sandbox for this project is located at Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining.

Another Critical Dissonance example has been added to YMMV.Cuties, despite it being removed for not being an example at least three times:

  • Critical Dissonance: To say it suffers from this would be an understatement to say the least. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film sits at a respectable 87% approval rate from professional critics, while its Audience Score sits at a mere 15% (which is up from a measly 3% when the film first released in September).

Isn't their a note to not add it. Report who did that to the mods.

There was a note, but it also said "until mid-October". Since October's almost over, the comment's now moot.

We can still check the example, though, to see if it's valid.

To be fair, what the note actually says is:

%% As the film's controversy began during the promotion of the American release in late August, and the film was released there in September, please refrain from adding CriticalDissonance until mid-October.

Eh, its American audience reception definitely seems to have dissonance, at the very least. Audiences hate it but critics enjoyed it.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

Although the Critical Dissonance entry could use some more context.

I'm still not convinced that audiences actually disliked it, as opposed to its low audience review score being due to review bombings by people who took exception to the advertising and never actually watched the film.

Everyone I know who actually watched it said it was quite good and that the advertising is terrible and misses the point.

[up] Huh. Honestly every Youtube reviewer I've come across decried the film as terrible and that everyone who liked it was an evil pedo.

In my experience, even people who watched it thought it had some creepy scenes (or problematic in other ways), even if they don't go as far as review-bombing and/or calling the creator a pedophile. At the very least, the critical reviews are very positive while even the genuine audiences are mixed at best, so I'd say it counts.

The majority of "this film is unironically pedo" responses I've seen are either people who watched out-of-context clips, or from right-aligned people who want to stick it to the SJ Ws because of the black Muslim female director, often believers in Q Anon. Make of that what you will. Those who didn't dislike it agree that the scenes were creepy, but not enough to hate the movie altogether.

[up] I've also seen virtue signaling people on Twitter who say that pedophilia is indeed terrible decry it.

But yea, would this film fit Critical Backlash? I'm not sure if the people who hate it have to watch the film for it to count.

I can perhaps understand some of the negative response from good-faith individuals being the result of Americans Hate Tingle due to French-US Values Dissonance regarding frank depictions of sexuality in media.

I haven't seen the film and don't really have a horse in this race, but if it is an example of Critical Dissonance, the entry text will need to establish it with more than just a Rotten Tomatoes number.

I'm pretty sure this entry on YMMV.Three Days Grace is complain-y:

  • Narm:
    • The music video for "Animal I Have Become" is full of this, with pathetic CG effects in a failed attempt to make a Nightmare Face, but the pinnacle of narm is near the end when a camera slowly pans up to reveal a woman with the same face, only to suddenly zoom in with a bad Screen Shake effect as Adam gives a hilariously overacted scream.
Pathetic, failed, and hilariously overacted, huh? Still, maybe there is a point: I'd say the video in question does have its narm-y moments... but then, I don't like 90% of music videos I watch X) My opinion is not very reliable here. So, I'm not sure what to do.

~Randomtroper 89: I cut everything from The Empath that I could identify as complaining, with the possible exception of this:

The Empath tends to suffer frequently from The Worf Effect. Whenever a telepathic Big Bad or Sealed Evil in a Can gets loose, The Empath usually gets reduced to a blubbering temple-clutching wreck in the first encounter to put the emphasis on exactly how bad the villain's mojo is. Alternatively, they could get drunk on its evil).
Double-check if it needs reorganization.

I'm back!

This stuff towards the end didn't seems like complaining (though it could obviously be trimmed and has a real bad sinkhole):

On the positive side, they're usually the first to create a Glamour Failure for supernatural opponents.

Sometimes the Empath allowed is evil (most likely due to being driven nigh-insane from automatically empathizing with everything around them - good and bad). Through the power of emotional manipulation an evil empath becomes the ultimate Manipulative Bastard and Chess Master. Expect to see at least one very cruel Batman Gambit. If the evil influence is due to chronic Power Incontinence rather than malicious intent, The Empath may become the Fisher King. Of course, just because someone is able to sense others' emotions, doesn't mean they will necessarily care.

Sometimes the Empathy may be described as being able to calm villains or troubled characters because they are able to know just how they feel deep down, or even able to project an aura - however they cannot overwhelm a Complete Monster.
