Removing complaining, bashing and other negativity from the wiki

Go To

Inspired by this thread, I've noticed that this wiki doesn't have a dedicated cleanup thread for negativity.

As we all know, Complaining About Shows You Don't Like, Creator Bashing and other negativity isn't desired on the wiki, except in a few selected areas like reviews and several Darth Wiki pages (and even then, with limitations). And yet, it's one of the most common sins wiki contributors can make.

So, if you find a page, TLP or discussion whose content seems like a straight-up insult or any other bitching - including complainy soapboxing -, you might ask here for help with removing said content.

The sandbox for this project is located at Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining.

Reposting since it got lost in the shuffle:

On a related note regarding Cinema Sins and Parody Retcon, here’s the entry on the trope page:

  • The creators of CinemaSins have usually responded to critique of their videos by claiming that they're intended to be satirical, and that the narrator of the series is more of a "character" who represents anal-retentive Caustic Critics on the Internet. The problem is that while this is sometimes true, and many "sins" are clearly jokes that are occasionally made at the "character"'s expense, they also like to use this excuse where it doesn't fit, such as where (a) the "sin" is factually incorrect; (b) the "sin" is the same as the creator's personal view (which we know from places like Jeremy's personal review channel) and thus can't be attributed to a "character"; and (c) the creators contradict themselves and claim that the channel isn't satire and should be taken seriously.

Parody Retcon honestly sounds like such a risky concept to note. Only report the creayor claiming it's parody, don't speculate in detail whether it's good/accurate or not. It's trivia, not YMMV. So just keep the first sentence.

Also, I'm wary of how Tumblr is troping the real users of the site, especially the derisive talk about "social justice warriors." There's some troping them under NRLEP tropes like Berserk Button and Does Not Like Men. YMMV.Tumblr is about ten times as worse. (One of the Scrappy Mechanic notes how tags are sometimes used for more than one thing...and then proceeds to list several different examples that honestly could be summarized quickly.)

Luckily somebody else noticed this so there's a sandbox for a more neutral version of the page. Maybe we can replace most of this page with the more neutral draft.

[up]Only with mod approval. There may be tropes that are applicable to the layout of the website or more general culture of its users, but the troping of real-life people has definitely got to go.

This may fall better under the Website cleanup thread, but all of those sites like Tumblr, YouTube, etc., should have their YMMV sections completely deleted. They are not creative works or creators of works. What people think about them is irrelevant.

You could make case for YMMV examples for creative works on those platforms, but that seems like a minority to what they're typically used for.

We allow YMMV subpages for creators to capture examples not linked to specific work articles, but I don't see how that would devolve to the platform. It's a step too far.

I am inclined to agree. It seems like the troper body as a collective struggles to separate tropes/Audience Reactions towards a website from these towards works hosted on a website. Thus all these trope lists fill up with examples about the users.

Moving on, this bit on Maya & Miguel seems to bash the edutainment genre while also adding odd complaints about the show (a show about Hispanic culture...focuses too much on Hispanic culture?):

"Unlike some other Edutainment series, Maya & Miguel is actually well-written and humorous, although it does suffer from the use of Gratuitous Spanish and too much focus on the ethnicity of the characters."

Even the other half of the complaint doesn't make sense by the way; there's a lot of edutainment series that are well-regarded, including those that shared a programming block (PBS Kids GO) with Maya & Miguel. The poorly-regarded edutainment series are typically aimed at a much younger demographic (Maya, like the other programs on GO, was for kids around 6-10 years old), so it's apples to oranges.

[up] The Triangle Shades entry on the first one is too nitpicky. That can go.

Also, the update system entry is a sizeable Wall of Text that needs pruning.

[up]I agree with what you said about the triangle shades. I thought the new designs look like Roy Koopa's sunglasses more than anything, even if they're not exactly the same.

As for New Leaf not having an update system, that's a lie. There was an update option on the title screen until the Welcome amiibo update removed it in favor of distributing updates via the eShop. I'm pretty sure at least one bug fix update was released in Japan, and the fact that the Welcome amiibo update (which received at least one bug fix update of its own) exists at all shows that there's an update system; it just isn't as extensive as the one for New Horizons.

Edit: That, and the features that Dr. Shrunk, Pelly, Phyllis, and Pete provided in New Leaf were in New Horizons from day 1, but the example neglects to mention that despite mentioning other cases of features being assigned to different characters (or no character at all in Harriet's case).

Crossposting from ATT after a responder suggested me to:

Zoic Alcelaphine has been adding a great deal of lengthy edits to the YMMV page of ''Undertale'' that read to me like personal venting rather than proper descriptions and summaries of opinions held by a portion of the fanbase, as the page is meant for. A bunch of them also come off as Darker and Edgier or Ron the Death Eater interpretations. We've had other problems with editors around this time adding such charged entries onto the page for Sans.

At the least, their Can't Argue with Elves entry has been deleted for not being YMMV, and between the sheer length and number of entries they posted for it, seems to indicate their edits are motivated by serious wonking.

From my own experiences with the fanbase, and asking others still in it, these do not seem to be particularly widely-held opinions.

Eh, its name is due to being a subtrope of Excuse Plot, which isn't really negative IMO (sometimes a work's plot isn't meant to be the focus at all so much as the cool stuff surrounding it; fans and probably even some creators will admit that). The only issue I see with the description is "grab a hold of the people you think are into it" which might alienate people who actually are into this kind of story.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.
