Should've set some gold into where the diamond would normally go.

Just for maximum inversion.

And to say I was nervous... it wouldn't be quite enough.

Of course, if they used synthetic diamonds, the ring would have less flaws and be many orders of magnitude cheaper.

But they seem to know where they are going, the ones who walk away from Omelas.

[up] Yeah, but who wants a cheap ring? See, whoever buys it can say to someone "my ring is worth more than your soul and I don't even wear it!"

Now THAT'S what good bling is all about.

And let us pray that come it may (As come it will for a' that)

How much would that mass, anyways? I think wearing an actual diamond ring would place unnecessary strain on the finger.

I have never particularly liked diamonds, anyway. There are so many prettier precious stones.

I've always found diamond to be an ugly stone.

Corundum is where it's at.

This ring is the kind of needlessly extravagant and expensive thing that newly-rich Russians would buy.

inane: I'm more of a fan of sapphire, myself.

That rig would've looked nicer made out of an amethyst. :P

Too brittle and easily scratched. Amethyst is a fine gem; but it is basically just colored quartz, and you can break quartz pretty easily if you want to.

If you want to make an object out of amethyst, you should make a cup — the Romans thought that it protected from poisoning, if I remember correctly.

EDIT: It also protected from drunkenness, apparently.

The Greek word "amethystos" may be translated as "not drunken", from Greek a-, "not" + methustos, "intoxicated". Amethyst was considered to be a strong antidote against drunkenness, which is why wine goblets were often carved from it. In Greek mythology, Dionysus, the god of intoxication, and of wine, was pursuing a maiden named Amethystos, who refused his affections. Amethystos prayed to the gods to remain chaste, a prayer which the goddess Artemis answered, transforming her into a white stone. Humbled by Amethystos's desire to remain chaste, Dionysus poured wine over the stone as an offering, dyeing the crystals purple.

EDIT 2: I must admit, I always found minerals and gems interesting. I even took a course on basic mineralogy during my bachelor studies, and it was fascinating. It annoys me that, also because of things like this, an unmarried male cannot wear a gem without projecting an image of "rich idiot with way too much ego and money and not enough common sense". Otherwise, I'd kinda like one of the more tasteful, cheap ones — amethyst, perhaps, in fact.
