"The world lies in shrouded darkness.
The winds die...
The seas rage...
The earth decays...
But the people believe in a prophecy, patiently waiting for its fulfilment.
'When darkness veils the world, four Warriors of Light shall come.'
After a long journey four young warriors did at last appear...
...And in the hand each was holding a crystal."

"Welcome to Corneria!" the guard shouted with much gusto as yet another adventurer entered the town. It was odd to see that many come here these days, seeing how turbulent things were right now. Then again, the bounty offered by the king for taking down the captain of the guard after he went insane and kidnapped the princess was rather tempting... But for some reason, the king kept turning away anyone who tried to offer their services. Something about them not having crystals or something. The king was kinda picky, really.

The guard knew exactly what to do with the adventurer, even if they weren't the people the king was looking for. There was only one place any adventurer would want to go whenever they entered a town.

And so he pointed them to the nearest inn.

"I keep saying! I'm the strongest there is! A mere drink cannot defeat me!" Shujiko argued with the innkeeper stubbornly, her hair unkempt and wild. Even though she'd just washed. Like, three days ago.

Unfortunately for the young, somewhat boyish brawler, the innkeeper simply wouldn't let her have ale of any kind. Too young and not enough gil or something. Shujiko wasn't fully listening, she just wanted to drink something!

With a threatening crack of her knuckles, Shujiko announced, "Last warning! Let me have an ale or I'll use my Hero Punch!"

In the same inn, a door to one of the rooms opened up with the tiniest of clicks. Appearing out of the dark sanctum was a girl clad in silken shirt and leather gear. Closing the door silently behind her to block the outside from peering inside. A commotion was happening nearby, drawing the curious thief outwards. It was some boy to her eyes, arguing with the pub owner for a shot of alcohol.

"Boy, you need something sweet for that bitter thing you want to drink. As a general rule, money is always honey." Snow idly commented, before flashing a bit of Gil between her knuckles at the owner. "Might we parch our throats with that sinful liquid? Please?" The thief asked politely, giving the man a way out of impending violence along with possible profit.

Claire had never actually been in a bar before. As such, this was a new experience for her. New experiences tended to make her rather nervous. Especially in places as loud and rowdy as a bar. However, she had to bear it. She was a red mage, someone who helped people and fought with magic and blades! Not someone to shrink back and be shy of a simple venture to a bar. Putting on her most confident expression, she ventured inside.

Claire walked past several large men sitting around a table, talking, and towards the bar. She... wasn't actually sure what she was doing, but it looked like she was confident, right?

"I require a beverage. Anything other than that cheap swill you call beer will suffice," Alice demanded, walking up to the bar. The other future light warriors were somewhat taller than she was but the hat made up for any loss in notability. Her rudeness would normally prevent her from being served, however... if not for the pretty heavy-looking purse in her hand, the alarming glowing eyes, and the overall air of education and firepower. Throwing out magic users? Never a good idea.

Shujiko glanced over her shoulder at the girl who seemed to be speaking to her. Saying a bunch of random sounding words that Shujiko assumed meant 'I shall buy this drink'.
"Name's 'Shujiko', not 'Boy'." The young brawler replied brightly. "And I checked, money doesn't taste like honey at all! But okay, you can buy it for me!"

The innkeeper raised an eyebrow at this short exchange. Really now, even with adult supervision, he doubted it was a good idea to give the messier-looking kid alcohol of any kind... but hey, it was either get a few gil or spend much more fixing whatever got wrecked in the processing of throwing him out.

"Fine, fine, two sinful liquids coming right up," The innkeeper relented, and set to work filling two glasses, which he placed on the counter before them. "There ya go, Hero and Charity."

"Shujiko." The monk-class girl corrected, immediately grabbing her glass. Innkeeper merely rolled his eyes and set his attention to a girl demanding a drink.
He obviously wasn't fond of her tone. "...'Fraid the only alternative to 'cheap swill' is hot or cold milk." He replied. Quite truthfully too, his inn wasn't known for variety. Just quality. Whether that was good or bad was quite subjective, really.

While he waited for the mage-like girl to make the arduous choice in drink, he glanced at a girl in red approaching the bar. With a slightly more friendly tone, he greeted, "Welcome to Corneria Inn! Want anything, miss?"

Meanwhile, Shujiko gulped down her drink quite eagerly. She devoured half of it in one before setting the glass down.

"...Don't like it." She decided with a shrug, and turned to the girl who bought her drink. "Can you sell it back? Wasn't happy with it!"

"I... um..." Put on the spot, Claire wasn't sure what to say. Didn't they only sell alcohol here? Would refusing a drink be rude? Would she get yelled at? She didn't want to get yelled at! But... no, no, she had to remain calm and confident, that was the only course of action. Taking a deep breath and putting on her most confident expression, she spoke.

"I'm not thirsty, ah... I just came here to... see if anyone needed help!" Right, that made sense.

"'Anything other'. Hot milk will do nicely," Alice replied, getting out a few coins and placing them on the bar. She wasn't overly concerned that the coins were more than twice the value of the drink—her parents had been sending her money she had no use for for years—and just wanted to take the milk and get going. She'd only stopped in here to get something after a long journey. Once she had the drink, it was time to go to the castle and get the king to hire her.

She wanted to get some real-life experience with her magic, after all.

"..." A contemplative look came upon Snow's face as she heard the rambling on's of her drinking neighbor, who... didn't really seem to know the way of the world. "No... you cannot sell something consumable back to the businessman, especially after you took a sample of it." Pausing to drain her own frothy mug, the girl lightly set it down on the bar counter and wiped her mouth.

"But you're in luck... Shujiko. For I am willing to purchase said drink. But... I was the one who purchased your drink in the first place, so that in itself... is a conundrum. Seeing as you have no Gil-" In a flash, a piece of parchment and a quill pen with ink were laid out. It probably appeared while she was talking down the monk. "We could work out a payment plan with your supposed martial abilities?"

"You can't?" Shujiko frowned. "But... if he sold it, then surely I can too!"

Totally made sense. After all, Shujiko saw the inn keeper sell it herself.

Anyway, it seemed this girl would buy the drink, but due to her lack of money... Shujiko stared at the parchment, unable to read whatever was written there. But apparently it was a way to pay.

"You mean pay with punches?" Shujiko asked brightly. "I punch things pretty good! I can do that!"

Meanwhile, the Innkeeper raised an eyebrow at the red-clad girl. Help someone? But it was far too early for anyone to be collapsing in a drunken stupor, unless one of these young ones couldn't take alcohol.

"Suit yourself," The Innkeeper shrugged, and set about warming a glass of milk for the mage. He returned from the back room a moment later, warm glass in hand. Setting it on the counter, he counted the gil left the appropriate change by the glass, and returned to his duties.

Wait, they could just get hot milk? But... was it alcoholic hot milk? This was a bar... then again, the girl ordering the hot milk looked too small to be ordering anything alcoholic, so... Right! Claire walked up to the bar.

"I... um... I changed my mind! A red mage out to help people who need it needs something to keep her going," she said. He parents had told her that clarifying her profession and intent tended to be a good idea. "I'll have some hot milk, too."

Alice took the drink, was preparing to leave, and then—

"Red Mage? You obviously have magical ability to take up such a profession as well as the desire to put it to use. Yet you have nevertheless squandered it across a dozen different doctrines and a completely unrelated set of martial capabilities. Your kind sickens me; no-one should waste magical ability in such a manner," the black mage said coldly, mood soured as she glared at the unfortunate Claire and then left, milk in hand.

There was no chance of getting the cup back.

Claire stared after the girl. She wasn't particularly able to devise a response, it had just come so out of no where that she hadn't even been able to react to it properly until the girl was already a little ways off. Trembling, she stared after her. "B-b-but... but... b-but..."

She sniffled. The pretenses of confidence and self-assurance? Gone.

"Yes... Payment with your body seems like the most plausible choice." The thief quipped, bottling up her eagerness at the potential new sucker. Now then, just write your signature on the line with the X and we can call it even." Snow said, picking up quill and dipping it deftly into the ink bottle before holding it aloft towards Shujiko to take it. "Quid pro quo and whatnot."

Turning her head slightly to better take in the other scene in the bar, the thief's face changed for the first time; the barest of grimaces. Really, you shouldn't outright rob someone of their happy feelings like that. It was just plain wasteful. Already, machinations began churning in her head before being waved away. Obviously, she wasn't going to be seeing that horribly rude person again... right?

"My body is worth lots of money!" Shujiko announced proudly, drawing quite a few glances. Not noticing the stares, she spotted what was recognised as an 'x' shape and began to write her signature. Judging by the nonsensical squiggly lines, Shujiko just had to make a squiggly line or something, right?

Meanwhile, the Innkeeper glanced at the red mage, grunting in acknowledge and wished people would be more decisive sometimes with what they wanted. Disappearing into the back once more, he missed the exchange between Alice and Claire. Or rather, Alice's little rant.

Shujiko, however, noticed. Hearing said rant, she was distracted from adding a little drawing to her 'signature' and watched as a girl with shiny eyes upset a nicely-dressed girl in red with her words before leaving. Shujiko didn't much like that. And her father did she say she was a destined hero, what with her shiny rock and all...

"Excuse me, Nice Person, but I have to deal with terrible badness!" Shujiko informed Snow, probably meaning to say 'injustice' or some other super fancy word. Hopping off of her bar stool, Shujiko left her simple and worn shoes were they lay on the floor and approached Claire. Patting her shoulder and grinning widely, Shujiko confidently said, "Not to worry, Red! I'll solve this problem by punching it silly, okay?"

And with that, Shujiko rushed from the inn, chasing down Shiny Eyes, while the innkeeper himself returned with a new glass of warm milk, quite baffled to see the Red Mage now sniffling.

"I am here to request an audience with the king as regards the traitorous captain," Alice explained to one of the castle guards, having drunk her milk on the way and discarded the cup behind her (potentially tripping someone up), and sighing when he didn't seem to get it, "I fully understand that you have an open-door policy on this day. However, your gates are shut and I am hardly possessed of the physical strength to open them. Do you comprehend or is the concept that someone might not have chosen to become a sack of flesh too alien?"

Claire stared after the retreating figure. What had just happened...? The tears, which had been welling up, stopped flowing as confusion took hold. Slowly, she took the glass of warm milk, and paid for it, still staring. ... Wait, what was she doing? She wasn't just supposed to let other people solve her problems!

With that, she stood up and hurried out, taking the milk with her.

Pausing to drain the second mug of beer while everyone else ran from the bar, Snow ruminated on what to do. Draining the object of its last drop of alcoholic content, the girl placed it down and exited the bar. Seeing as the town was known for the recruitment of certain adventurers... Well, there was no doubt where to go for the thief. Money was to be made, and such jobs were ever so sweet.

"Hey, Shiny Eyes!" Shujiko called after the rude girl. Hurrying after the mage, Shujiko wondered if physical retribution was necessary. That girl looked less durable than the goblins after all...

So wrapped up on her thoughts on how to best deal with her rude attitude to the girl in red, Shujiko didn't notice the mug discarded on the ground until she ended up tripping over it. With a surprised cry, she landed face-first on the ground.

Slowly climbing to her knees, Shujiko gingerly rubbed at her slightly scratched forehead, then experimentally moved her foot. Well, head was stinging, but she was otherwise fine. Now, why was that thing there in the first place...

A trap! Shiny Eyes tried to get rid of me before I could get to her! Shujiko realised. That sneaky girl! trying to remove or otherwise weaken her in order to survive punishment!

"...Ehehe... Too bad, Shiny Eyes, but I am invincible!" Shujiko announced to... well, herself as she got back to her feet. After giving the offending mug a kick that only ended up scraping her toe against the ground, Shujiko limped off towards wherever that crafty mage had ran off too.

When the guard inevitably pulled open the gate, as much to get rid of the annoying magic user as to accommodate her request, Alice walked quickly through, not asking which way it was to the throne room. Naturally, this meant that she arrived somewhat later than she should otherwise have done... and giving the other three plenty of time to get there before or just after her.

"..." Ghosting in after the other girl while the door was still open, Snow wandered into the castle. It was a temptation for her not to go and pocket some of the gilded stuff just lying around, like the doorknobs, or the candleholders, or even the ceremonial swords that the knight armors were holding. Still, she expected to be compensated for the job, and thus she followed her instinct towards the throne room, which should theoretically be either at the middle of the place.

Shujiko found her way to the castle, realisation dawning on her. She'd been sent to talk to the king about being a hero, hadn't she? Because of the shiny rock... she'd completely forgotten that for about a week now. She'd... kind of gotten side tracked.

And now, having completely forgotten about Shiny Eyes, the monk limped towards the castle. After a brief argument with the naturally-suspicious guards and a mention of her shiny rock, she was allowed inside.

Shujiko had no idea where she was going, but by pure chance she just happened to be heading directly for the throne room. The shiny stuff on the walls happened to be a guide for her, apparently.

Claire approached the gates. Well, this was where she had been planning on going at first... taking a drink of her milk, and a deep breath, she had a short discussion with the guards before being allowed in. The guards only ended up letting her in after staunch, repeated refusal to let her through the gates began to drive Claire to tears. At least she got let in, though she would've rather been let in due to assertiveness or something then the guards feeling bad.
