pleasant surprise. I wonder if that means French troops will be deployed elsewhere...
Final Fantasy, Foreign Policy, and Bollywood. Helluva combo, that...So it seems Mali might be about to unravel again.
Final Fantasy, Foreign Policy, and Bollywood. Helluva combo, that...West African in general is having a lot of problems right now. It's still better off than East or Central Africa, though.
Great we might experience another Afghanistan ... .
Sigh.
It seems that the fight against AQIM has been used as an excuse to start an ethnic cleansing campaign against the Fula.

The French Army has reported the first losses of their VBC Is to car bomb attacks.
"Exit muna si Polgas. Ang kailangan dito ay si Dobermaxx!"The Forces Armées Mali has suffered major casualties recently with 49 soldiers killed by Islamists.
"Exit muna si Polgas. Ang kailangan dito ay si Dobermaxx!"Maybe it's just the way the media is telling it, but I feel like the only region Mali hasn't completely disintegrated at this point is because of the French contingent.
And I'm not sure thats entirely a good thing...
Final Fantasy, Foreign Policy, and Bollywood. Helluva combo, that...I'm not surprised.
It's in French interests for Mali not to get taken over by jihadi forces.
"Exit muna si Polgas. Ang kailangan dito ay si Dobermaxx!"Seems there is a mutiny underway in Kati, Mali. Kati is the location of the Malian Army barracks and was earlier involved in the 2012 coup de tat.
From what it's looking like, this may be a slow-moving coup or possible civil war in the making.
Final Fantasy, Foreign Policy, and Bollywood. Helluva combo, that. The president and prime minister have been arrested, according to AJE.

The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -FighteerHere we go again.
Can't wait to see how it'll affect G5 Sahel.
"Exit muna si Polgas. Ang kailangan dito ay si Dobermaxx!"Does anyone have a recording or a transcript of the full broadcast from the coup leaders? I can't find anything but fragments.
The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -FighteerI can find the official video, but it's entirely in unsubtitled French.
Any word on what the foreign troops in the country are doing? I’m pretty sure there’s at least French troops still there.
"And the Bunny nails it!" ~ Gabrael "If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we." ~ CyranThe German troops have been ordered back into the barracks and await further orders.
... The army of Mali. The army that was so goddamn useless that it could not stop an insurgency that had essentially zero local support from marching south, has couped the Malian government? This is not good news.
Some news is that the army's going to allow election ASAP... So we'll see.
And Imam Mahmoud Dicko annouced that he's stepping away.
"Exit muna si Polgas. Ang kailangan dito ay si Dobermaxx!"Col. Assimi Goita, head of a special forces unit, has assumed the lead of the Junta.

The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -FighteerHopefully France and the other European countries currently engaged in Mali will tell him that he either organizes free elections in the near future, or he'll have to fight the islamists without European support.
Guessing this guy doesn't last more than a month, much like the last putchist dude, Sanogo.
That said, I don't see Europe making that particular demand, since they are in it as much for their own interests of fighting AQIM as it is to maintain Mali's status as a functioning nation state.
Now the African Union on the other hand has already put down the hammer. Europe should just support Addis Ababa on that front.
Final Fantasy, Foreign Policy, and Bollywood. Helluva combo, that...Yeah the EU should look the back the AU’s play, which might actually be best as the AU being in charge of a temporary government while elections are organised.
