I started reading the novels after the first episode. But even with Aria fresh in my mind, I still enjoyed the second episode.
huh. I don't think they are likely to screw up... i just wonder whether they will be putting it in chronological order or follow the novel's style(using flashbacks or something).
I mean, it's not a bad lead-in, we know about how he is a beater since they explained it in Aria, so him being worried about them finding out about his status as a beater is a perfectly legitimate worry.
The problem is that they will have to explain the reason he is so driven to complete "Red-Nosed Reindeer" on top of the rest of the story/plot. About the only ways I can imagine them doing so with only one episode is to spend over half the episode on "backstory" or spend almost no time on the "backstory." (Any more details to explain what I expect would probably spoil the plot and I don't want to use the spoiler mark-up because of how easy that is to read)
While it is quite possible that the episode will be entertaining for the anime-only audience, it is hard to imagine the LN readers enjoying ether option (as much*). There is just no way I can see for them to create the same sort of connection to the characters/situation that the books provide in that amount of time.
Hopefully I am wrong... but I don't think so.
I have a suggestion: after each anime episode airs, LN readers make a single post that explains what they didn't like and then no one tries to discuss it.
That way we can hopefully focus on the good aspects. We (and I definitely count myself as part of that "we") have been focusing way too much on They Changed It, Now It Sucks! because we are not getting anything even close to what we hoped.
(I know this is wishful thinking, but maybe people will remember it and there will be less complaining in the future)

Yu hav nat sein bod speeling unntil know. (cacke four undersandig tis)the cake is a lie!So you think it'll be flashback style?
Don't be so pessimistic about LN readers not enjoying it, RNR is basically a stand alone story, what happens before that has really little impact, the aftereffects just show you how Kirito got his solo, anti-guild mindset. Oh, and maybe explains a bit on storage sharing, but that's basically it.
"Flashback/dream" (all at once or in parts) is one option. The other is to show the "backstory" then jump to the "present." Any of these ways will work, but what really matters is if they want to "show" the backstory or "explain" it. There are advantages to every method: it is quite possible that an "explanation" style would take up less time (and is what they will probably go with) while "showing" would create a better emotional connection.
Good points. Though the most important/emotional parts of the story (to me) are the buildup that is part of the "backstory" and the last bit, not the middle. I just don't see how they can fit in ether of those and have them be as emotion-inducing as the original/LN.
Also added "as much" to my post.
Yu hav nat sein bod speeling unntil know. (cacke four undersandig tis)the cake is a lie!... That was a good adaptation in my opinion. And it is followed directly by the black swordsman.
also, Argo shows up! worth a lot of points in my book.
Eat your words, Belian!(Unless there is someone here who has something to complain about this adaptation. Whereupon I'll need to eat mine.) admittedly they left out WHY the item was there, you know, the item storage sharing part, but the emotional points were still there
@ Burnpsy: yeah, that part was like that in the LN too. For me, It was heart wrenching because the LN described in detail the trouble Kirito went through to get that object. in fact, kirito was so frustrated in the LN he tried to break it
Wonder why Rudolph the Red nosed raindeer was only hummed instead of sung in full in the LN. Maybe the Voice actor can't sing in english?

But like I said, even if Kirito forgot having a naked girl in his bathroom, Aria's part of a whole stretch of ministories. First they hang out in his room on the first floor, then they go hunting for materials on the second floor, then after they again walk the stairs to the third floor together after the bossfight they embark on a quest together that lasts from the 3rd floor to the 9th floor. Long story short, in the new retelling, Asuna became Kirito's "very important partying partner" as he put it, quite a bit earlier then Volume 1 led us to believe. The anime however is still going down the original route since this new version of Volume 1 hasn't been written yet, but still needed to introduce Asuna and Agil and the whole Beater thing.
Hence what we have now. I'm not saying Episode 2 is anywhere near as good as it should've been but what the Kirito/Asuna interactions are concerned, I get it.
