Academy City. A bastion of science, which houses countless technological innovations, unheard of weapons, and some of the most powerful beings on the planet. An unassailable fortress of reason, and the rule of law.

This is the eye of the coming storm. The prize in an inevitable war between past and future, and the battlegrounds on which it will be fought. Each side rallies their troops, growing in number and in power, slowly stretching their tendrils around the roots of Academy City. Yes, an inevitable war. A clash between two irreconcilable ideals, one which will determine the very fate of Academy City. It all begins soon...

Nakahi Miruko massaged her screaming shoulders while lying down on bed. It did little to actually alleviate the burning, but even the gesture soothed some of the mental stress clogging up the nerves in her brain. Tired of doing absolutely nothing, she pushed up the blanket she was using and watched it float up to the ceiling before she let it fall back down onto the bed once she was up and about.

Man, I really shouldn't have gone hand-to-hand with those punks. Not my style.

Merely four hours ago, Miruko had been taking care of some gangsters who did not seem to know her reputation. She had gotten a tad too heated and actually started punching them while crushing their bones under 100 G. As it turned out, it was a bad idea for someone of her physical exertion levels to start engaging in physical activities so suddenly. She was paying for it with soreness in her shoulders and arms.

Ahhhhh! Damnit, it's Sunday. Gotta go shopping. Ugh.

After washing, cleaning, changing, and doing various other household chores, Miruko was out of her apartment and about, gliding on the sidewalk to the convenience store. For everyday life, she reduced her weight to about 75% of her normal levels. This reduced the effort it took to do pretty much anything involving movement, but it also increased the distance of her strides. To general passerbys, they would notice something strange about how the girl walked, but they wouldn't know what it was. For herself, it simply made life less of a pain.

Man, I'm bored.

"You've written down the address and room number, I trust?" The Professor's voice said through the laptop on the desk in front of Michelle. The basement room was dim, the only light at the moment was that which was filtering through small windows towards the ceiling. Aside from the exit to the stairwell that led to the ground level and the windows, the walls were lined with bookshelves. It was an oddly small basement considering the size of the apartment building above ground.

"Yes," Michelle replied, patting a pocket, "The directions as well." The motion was of course superfluous, the laptop she was talking to the Professor through didn't have a camera. Michelle wasn't wearing her swords or gauntlets at the moment, they were locked away in the apartment a few blocks away that had been rented for the duration of the mission.

"Well then, I wish you good fortune, today is the first step on a long road, one which may not lead to the happy ending we both desire," the Professor replied. Immediately after he finished talking he signed off the voice chat program. Michelle walked forwards and picked up the laptop, placing it into a carrying case that was leaning against the desk. Hoisting the bag over her shoulder, she left the room, locking the door behind her.

On the street above, Michelle stopped in front of a map, alternating glances between the sheet of paper with directions to the hospital and the city map posted on the street corner.

"Alright... here it is. No doubt about it" whispered a young lady as she checked a map on her tablet while standing just outside a convenience store. It was pretty amazing for the girl to learn that the hideout of one of the city's bands of thugs had a hideout so close to such a family friendly convenience store. Sakai Kyou could only guess that even street punks liked a chocolate pudding every once in a while.

While such a thought made what she was about to do a tad less scary, nevertheless she really needed to gather her courage. Slipping her tablet into the special pouch for it that hung from the back of her belt, she closed her eyes and held her closed fists in front of her right at waist level moving them up and down a couple centimeters as she whispered to herself "Courage, courage, courage, Sakai!" with closed eyes.

What she did not notice was that in the middle of her courage gathering ritual she had started to let out little sparks of electricity... and how she was attracting a nearby can and a couple of dropped coins to her.

Just one more detail should be mentioned about Kyou. She had thought to use a hoodie in order to hide her features a little with the hood and to blend in a little better in the underground based on what she had seen in television... though she had promptly found that she owned no such item of clothing so she settled with a bright orange raincoat which she now wore.

Miruko arrived at the convenience store, she spotted a curious looking figure in a bright orange raincoat.

Miruko looked up at the sky. Not a cloud in sight.

The person was drawing several objects to his being. Was he planning to rob the store or something? She intended to tap his shoulder to either beat the crap out of him and to ask what was going on, in that order, but the shocks arcing around the raincoat sillhouete convinced her not to. Instead, she just called out to him.

"Excuse me, do you need something? You're kind of attracting unwanted attention from inanimate objects." Miruko pointed out the coins and can sticking to him.

Miruko's accidently assuming Kyou is a male.

"I need courage to walk into the lair of evil in order to find my missing... Whoa!?"

Kyou started answering Miruko's question as if speaking to herself (she tended to that) before noticing the presence of the other Esper... and that of the can which rolled on her boot to attach itself to her ankle.

"Ah, away, away!" Kyou said kicking with left left foot at the air until the can detached itself and was sent flying away to fall harmlessly on the floor. She then let out a little breath of relief and turned to the person who spoke up to her "Ah, sorry, it happened without me noticing... Was I being in your way?"

"Oh." Miruko exclaimed. She had expected some shady middle aged man with a gun in his hand under that raincoat. Instead, she found a cute girl who apparantly didn't have full control of her esper powers, proved by the objects sticking to her body.

"No, don't worry. I was just going to stop by the store." Of course, this was a complete lie. Five seconds back in the past, she was about to assault this girl for being suspicious. She decided to point this out to her. "You know, often times, standing in front of a convenience store with your face hidden while showing off your esper powers tends not to be a good idea. You could get arrested." Or crushed by a passerby level 5 esper, said Miruko, keeping the last part to herself.

Just then, she noticed a sketchy looking group hiding out in an alleyway that the girl was facing. "Oh. Man, I just wanted to get some groceries. Scuse me miss, I have some business to take care of."

Miruko tried cracking her neck to get the attention of the shady group in the dark back alley. She bent her head over as far as it went, but no pop was heard. She tried cracking her knuckles next, but this failed too. "Ah f*ck it, come at me you sissies. I'll tear out your guts and stuff it down your throats."

This seemed to get the thugs riled up as they came at her in a group, totally not one by one like she expected. Didn't matter. Just as the thugs' fists were inches away from her face, about to break her nose, she activated her ability.

CRACK

Each of the gangsters fell to the ground. One face first. Cracks were heard from all of their bodies. Miruko crouched down and lifted up one of their heads by their wild dyed hair. Of course, she cancelled the 20g gravity field from his head alone. "Listen you f*cking lowlifes who will never amount to anything. Do me a favour and keep your damn heads out of trouble. Or at least try not to break any more bones while in the hospital. I'm going to get some food now. Bye."

"Ah, sorry! I wasn't aware that I was using my abilities... that sometimes happens when I get distracted or I'm concentrating very hard on something, normally it is quite harmless but... Um..."

Kyou started explaining her circumstances though she stopped when she noticed that the girl who had approached her had just crossed the street and was heading after the bad guys she had planned to confront.

"E-Eh...?" Kyou exclaimed in confusion as she tilted her head slightly.

And then, less than a minute later the girl had kicked the asses of all the notoriously rowdy thugs that comprised the gang of the area. And that without lifting a single finger. All the while with a serious voice and speaking in a rough and intimidating way.

Way too cool for Kyou. She was practically starry eyed by the spectacle.

In the blink of an eye, the little Electromaster crossed the street to stand right by Miruko's side and see her handiwork in more detail "So cool... Y-You beat them all in the blink of an eye"

Now stepping to the side to stand in front of Miruko she asked full of excitement "Can you tell me your name, please?"

Miruko brushed her hair over her shoulder and picked some dust out from her clothes. "Oh, I'm sorry you had to see that. Just doing some neighbourhood cleanup. Don't worry, they'll all live. Though I guess I should call the ambulance. I'm Nakahi Miruko. Currently on my way to get groceries. Nice to meet you." Miruko bowed to the girl, though her polite girl image was already kind of ruined by the spectacle she had just caused.

"Ah, wait just a second. I'll invite you to those groceries... it's the least I can do after you helped me this way. Just wait a single minute, please"

After that, Kyou turned around and crouched low so she could talk with the most conscious looking of the defeated punks. She put her hand on the head of one of them and then started to make a lot of questions "Excuse me, do you know Kaori Misaki? Have you heard of any girl kidnappings lately? Do you know any big time kidnappers? Have you heard of Divider?"

Now while the man didn't actually answer her questions, merely babbling curses and little cries of pain Kyou nodded her head a few seconds after everything she asked.

"I see... thank you for your time. And really, you shouldn't be in gangs and such things. Please think of it in the hospital, will you?"

With that, Kyou stood up suddenly and turned to Miruko with a big smile "Ehehe, shall go then?"

Miruko made her cell phone call while Kyou was gone for a second. An anonymous report to the police of several people injured in an alleyway next to a convenience store. She'd done so several times so she was worried that the hospital personnel would recognize her voice eventually. Maybe she could manipulate soundwaves somehow. Something to test later. As she slotted her phone into a pocket in her uniform, just as Kyou returned.

"Ahh, right grocery shopping. Let's get going Sakai-san."

Groceries. The next recipe in her weekly cookbook was... some sort of Korean food. Noodles of some sort. Miruko strolled through the isles, picking out the key ingredients while looking for anything that could add some little spice to the dish as well.

Back in the shadowy alley, one of the less-crushed thugs groaned, regrettably still conscious enough to feel pain. Every time he tried moving it felt like something new was breaking, splinters of splinters poking into cracks and making more splinters. Bones cracking, capillaries bursting, the works. He could see the bruises forming.

Wincing, he finally gave it up, and his muscles went slack. Well, he thought, trying to remain absolutely still, at least she called an ambulance. And hey, it can't get much worse than this, right?

"Wrong." What? The thug heard the dull thud of boots, accompanied by... knives? "Wrong wrong wrong wrong."

There was no way for him to tell what was going on, but that couldn't be good. Knives, knives, why were there knives? Maybe someone else could've said it was something else, but the thug knew knives. And that was the sound of someone scraping a knife on something. Even though he knew this, he still couldn't stop himself from thinking it, just to comfort himself. It's nothing. You're just hearing things. Hallucinating. Yeah, that can happen, right? Get the shit kicked outta yeah and you can start hallucinating, right?

"Wroooooong." A sharp edge brushed against the thug's cheek. In panic, he strained his eyes, trying to roll them back as far as he could, maybe see something, tell himself it was all just a funky... he saw eyes. Blurred, but he saw eyes. Red eyes, wrapped in silver, glowing in the freaking dark. Something nice and pointy dug into his cheek then, drawing just a pinprick of blood. Something hot, something wet ran up his cheek, dragging off the blood, lapping it up like a dog. Someone chuckled.

"You're wrong you know." Sharp, claw like fingers pulled back at his eyelids, forcing him to stare up. He could see her now, clearly. That half-masked face, covered in silver hair. And those eyes, those red eyes, those fucking hungry red eyes. Like she'd found something to eat. A small, pointed tongue, still red with his blood, poked out from the corner, painting her lips red before slithering back in. She smiled, the edges of her grin visible under the mask. "You've never been so wrong in your life."

Suddenly there was no room for thought. A no vacancy sign sprung up behind his eyes, and all that he could do was cry for help. Except no words could come. They were stifled by those clawed hands.

"Why waste the time? They can't help you anyway. They can't save you from me. They can't save any of you from me." She chuckled, eyes going wide with delight as the thugs' panicked breathing rose to a ferocious climax. "So get comfortable. You and me, we're gonna share some real special stuff. And no one's gonna interrupt until we're finished."

Leaning in close, her eyes centimeters from his and wide as dinner plates, she grinned real wide. "How about you start by screaming for me?" The hand released his mouth.

She finished with him around the time the ambulances came. Everyone was out cold. All of them with pained, contorted screams stretched across their face. Some of them had just been in pain. The others... well, the paramedics wouldn't notice the difference. Marz watched from the shadows, wondering if it was worth it pursuing them to the hospital. She'd only really gotten to play with one of them...

No, she decided. Wasn't worth it. Too crowded. She preferred something a little more personal. Took the edge off of it, made it a bit more enjoyable.

What am I talking about? She shook her head. No, she'd hang around the convenience store until nightfall. Maybe she'd catch some poor sucker on the graveyard shift.

Eric Greylain had arrived in Academy City the night before. He had taken a plane from China and then a car from the airport. He was sore; worn out from a recent assignment. Chinese mages were something else, and he never expected that one to know martial arts. It had taken a whole two punches to smash his head, and that was never good when his powers had a time limit.

The Anti-Skill officer that admitted him to the city looked at him oddly. They rarely dealt with people dressed so finely. Not to mention the cape. But appearances were necessary. It was all part of the persona. Greylain had only brought a single suitcase. In it was a laptop, two cell phones with encryption cards, and a two way radio. The Anti-Skill must have thought his smirk was invisible. No, Greylain had seen it, and if this wasn't a job he would have wiped it off right then and there. But, money was money and these guys were the clients even if they didn't know about it.

The Anti-Skill had asked his reason for being here, but got a call in the middle of Greylain's answer. Without pause, he had waved Greylain through.

The apartment had waited. Cold, bare, too clinical for Greylain's tastes. He had placed his stuff down on the table and walked into the bathroom. There, he made a magic circle on the floor using chalk from his coat pockets. He sat crossed legged in the middle of it.

"The body recedes until nothing is left. Thoughts jump, and transform into will. Will becomes purpose. Purpose to resolve. Resolve strengthens my mind, and turns it to steel."

Michelle exited the train, frustratedly wondering to herself exactly why in the world a single city would possibly need this complicated a mass transit system. Why can't people just walk?

Her destination was only a few blocks east of here. After checking to make sure she had everything she needed, Michelle headed out towards the hospital.

She arrived a few moments later, as a pair of ambulances pulled into the emergency room driveways not far off.

"I wonder what that was all about," Michelle wondered aloud, before shaking it off. Michelle walked through the main entrance, and approached the main desk.

"Excuse me, I'm here to visit," Michelle pulled a sheet of paper out of her pocket, scanning briefly before finding the name, "There it is, her name is..."

He awoke from the trance. Six hours had passed in an instant. Greylain could feel the power in him, just waiting for the activation phrase. He walked into the main room of his apartment and opened his stuff. He turned on the tv and muted it. Annoying thing, it was too loud as it was. He flipped channels, and caught sight of an interesting report. Multiple people admitted into a nearby hospital.

"Hmm." Greylain rubbed his chin. Are these what they call Skill-Out? One would think that such an advanced city could keep control of its populace...

He opened his bag and grabbed his laptop. He had a message on his private channel.

The sender was a single word, Strife.

He typed a short response. "Isn't it a bit stupid to be using morse code? Anybody with an internet connection can crack it. Besides, you're rusty. The message is broken."

He exited the apartment shortly after. He needed to pick up the drop, and it would be nice to get some fresh air.

It looked like Kyou had no intention of actually leaving her anytime soon.

Time for shopping, thought Aaron. Despite living in Academy City for almost 9 years of his life, he still was uncomfortable speaking in Japanese. Unfortunately, most people weren't comfortable with him projecting, so he had to open his mouth. Was it the accent?

He was still wearing his uniform, Nagatenjouki Academy's to be exact, as he walked down the road. The convenient store was up ahead. He would only have to talk a little bit.

As he neared the store he passed a pair on their way out. Two girls, talking excitedly. He focused, trying not to read their surface thoughts. It was more than a little difficult when they were so close. Eyes directly ahead, he shuffled past them.

Touka felt isolated despite the fairly full dining area of the ice cream parlor. He felt out of place both because he was the only St. Florian's student there and that he was the smallest one there. The place was a popular hangout on non-school days for high school students, even some middle schoolers, but there was no one the trap recognized. Maybe it was also because he'd taken a liking to green tea flavored ice cream with mint sprinkles and caramel syrup on it; everyone else seemed to think it was weird. As yet another group of students entered the place Touka slipped out, sighing with relief as he reached the street.

Even when he tried to dress more his age (but still girlishly), he still looked like a middle schooler. Another sigh as he stared down at the cute pink top with ribbon, denim knee length skirt and white knee socks he wore. Even the middle school aged kids in the shop were taller. Trying to forget that he walked slowly down the street, humming a tune that comforted him for some reason. He'd been sure his mom must have sang or hummed it when he was little, but he didn't have a good recollection of that time. She didn't recognize the tune either. Maybe he'd just heard it somewhere else.

Just then he heard a motorcycle somewhere nearby; he looked and saw its rider. Bikes weren't common amongst St. Florian's students, so this was kind of a rare treat. For whatever reason he waved in the direction of the rider. You had to be friendly to other people, after all.

Touka really hadn't expected the biker to respond, let alone approach him. Somewhat dejectedly he noted that the biker was rather tall and probably thought he was a kid. On the other hand there was something odd about the biker; maybe it was how he looked. When the biker took the helmet off, it was apparently a boy. A pretty boy. Or was handsome the right word? Regardless Touka blushed and averted his gaze for a moment before responding.

"Hi," he managed, then smiled akwardly and nodded towards the shop, "So.. getting some ice cream?"

Edward turned to the other direction, trying to see who was doing this. But there was no one. The lights on the other end of the street began to fail as well, cornering him. The failures raced towards him, trying to sandwich him. Then the last words came.
