Every so often, usually in works made in the 1940's or 1950's, you'll see a sign on a wall, or grafitti or some other slogan-type thing that says "Keep smiling". Less frequently, a character verbally says this to another character.

Does anybody know about this? Was this a US government morale building slogan, or maybe some pop culture thing?

I've definitely seen it in "Green Acres" and Bugs Bunny cartoons, but I've seen it in other works—I just don't remember which. If anybody knows and can shed some light on this, it would be greatly appreciated.

Move confidently in the direction of your dreams.

Well, I found here (Ctrl+F to find it) a 7Up ad from the 1950s that uses that, but I don't know if that's what you're referring to.

Insert witty and clever quip here. My page, as the database hates my handle.

I'm thinking it was a morale-boosting issue, considering how the Second World War was happening.
