I do think a lot of the versions of TMNT tend to go overboard on the mutants. Some is fine, but there's such a thing as too much of a good thing. The 2012 cartoon was possibly the worst about this. It reached a point where it seemed like almost everyone on that show was a mutant. Or an alien.
It sort of reminds me of the saying "if everyone is special, then no one is special".
If you're trying to say that it's hard to tell if she's roughly the same age as the Turtles a la 2012 and Rise April or older like in the 80s and 2003 variants, then I agree.
Actually, it just hit me. Didn't a TMNT fan comic by Josie Campbell (who actually has written/drawn official TMNT comics for IDW) have an April that shared physical attributions with Mutant Mayhem April?
It's probably coincidence, but...
Word of Saint Paul: Donnie's VA, Micah Abbey, claims the his character is a late bloomer
. Abbey's also 15, so maybe it's an Actor-Inspired Element?
I'm also probably overthinking it, but the way April is holding and jotting notes on a notebook, and asking questions, makes me think she could be a School Newspaper Newshound? This adaptation seems to still be beholden to following some conventions of the '87 series, I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case.

I assume you meant late bloomer?
Aren't pretty much all the Nick TMNT cartoons to some degree? It kind of makes me wish they would just go all the way with it, and do a full blown reboot of the 80s cartoon, similar to what they're doing with the 90s X-Men cartoon. It seems like that's what they really want to do, but they keep trying to disguise it.
Its also clear that its going to be a long time before they do anything that's not in that vein, like the 2003 cartoon, or the 2007 movie.
A direct Sequel to 86 would be interesting. NGL. Introducing concepts and characters from other parts of the franchise into it. Some stuff would need to be changed. Shredder hasn't been depicted as A loser since than lik ever so he would need to take a boost.
"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."I'd love to see 87 Shredder be the father of a Karai. Other Shredders are dads, but they are all dour, brutal, never-have-any-fun people. 87 Shredder was much more human, an I'd like to see him try his hand at raising a teenage daughter. One who probably has a crush on Leo, which Shredder definitely wouldn't approve of.

In fact, I think I heard that Lotus Blossom may have predated Karai and possibly inspired her.
Don't quote me on that however.
One Strip! One Strip! She actually did. Lotus Blossom's debut episode aired in 1989, while Karai's first appearance in the Mirage comics was in 1992. I don't know if Eastman and Laird were directly inspired by Lotus to create Karai however. It's known that they didn't avidly watch the 87 show, so they probably weren't.

Yeah. That sounds right. Have Eastman and Laird ever talked about it?
As I understand it, the shorter a gap is between two similar concepts, the less likely it is that one idea was copied to create the other.
It's the reason that the similarities between the original Doom Patrol and the original X-Men (team of freaks that fights for a world that hates and fears them, lead by a man in a wheel chair) are waived off.
Three years is a long enough time for them to hear about Lotus, maybe consider trying her their way, and coming up with Karai and how they want to use her.
One Strip! One Strip!I mean, the 2003 writers did have the people behind the comic behind it, so...
One Strip! One Strip!I imagine that an '87 version of Karai would be a Punch-Clock Villain. She helps out with Shredder's evil plans, but only because he's her dad and only when it doesn't interfere with her personal time. And unlike her father, she doesn't have anything against the Turtles and actually enjoys fighting them.
And as an aside, I'm also getting the funny mental image of '87 Shredder and Krang trying to teach Karai how to drive the Technodrome.

I wouldn't give it too much thought
