It is softened. ADWRP = masturbation; DE = wink wink nudge nudge.

But it's still making an obvious reference to it. And I don't get why it needs to be "softened".

The person (people?) who had a problem with ADWRP think that's better.

Enjoy implies it could be on the level of simple curiosity... or the thrill of the forbidden fruit... rather than flat-out masturbation.

Better to leave that word unpotholed, though.

That is exactly saying: "I don't like that joke and it should be taken out."

[up] Well... yeah. There's really no need of it.

Was just saying it is that but disguised, not that the meaning is different or something.

There is no need of any joke.

This is an underage boy. That's why a direct reference to masturbation is bad.

Sexual content about kids? You really need to be told why that's bad?

Unless it's In-Universe, we really shouldn't bring that up.

I agree that "young boys masturbate" is pretty close to "vertebrates breathe oxygen"—not objectionable at all—but the change from ADWRP to DE seems like an okay compromise.

If it was a guy about high school age, I think admitting they masturbate would be okay to acknowledge. But pre-teen looks like it's over the line.

Yes, I need to be told why a harmless, text-only (hell it relies on the pothole to get the joke across so it's not like people are going to get in trouble at work) joke is bad.

[up]You did ask.

And the point is the boy is clearly a boy. It might seem harmless, but I say better safe than The Situation.

Like I said before, this isn't Lolicon. A textual joke is fine.

[up]1. That would be shotacon. 2. It doesn't matter if the comment is text, it still refers to a boy who looks like he hasn't hit puberty.

Whatever it is, the point I'm making is that this is nowhere close to what got TV Tropes in trouble a while ago. That was all the lolicon-related pages and images, which were very obviously unsavory/sketchy. This caption as it is is completely harmless and funny and it's not going to get anyone in trouble.

And yes it does matter that it's just text because there's a pretty big difference between text and image.

It's an underage kid. Acting like it's just a pothole doesn't make it okay. It hasn't been okay with other inappropriate uses, so it can't be okay here.

How is it not OK? What other "inappropriate" uses do you mean?

I don't like this whole idea of sacrificing humor for 19th century notions of morality.

I mean yeah if the caption involved rape or something then yeah I would definitely be in favor of changing it but I don't see what's wrong with it the way it is.

I don't see how humor is lost by changing masturbation to something slightly less explicit that still gets the idea across.

I'm not crazy, I just don't give a darn!

Because if it's the exact same thing then why even change it at all? The whole idea of "softening" it just seems unnecessarily prudish.

It's not "the exact same thing". It is a similar thing.

It's still making a reference to a kid touching himself and if we're going by the "that's bad and wrong and horrible" standpoint, then it's hypocritical.

Not a perfect analogy, but it's not hypocritical to want to change "shit" to "poop". I agree that it's prudery but we're outnumbered.

Kaiser, it's the difference between the wiki not only making the reference but also underlining that that's the reference we're making, and the wiki saying something and letting people make the reference if they choose to. There's no way to ignore or miss that the reference is to masturbation is it's potholed to A Date with Rosie Palms. It is possible to interpret "enjoy" in other ways if it isn't potholed that way. Many people won't interpret it any other way, but those who want to can.
