I do not understand why it seems to be nothing more than a place for people to talk about others, or tease, or send the occasional death threat to the annoying Disney teen heart throb Justin McGomez Lavato.

Why do people feel the need to be such an asshole to each other? I'm very aware that I am black, kettle; I get the hypocrisy in this because I'm an annoying and angry twatwaffle myself, but I'm just like...so tired of putting all of my energy into being a jerk when the exact same amount of energy can be put towards not being a dick.

Does anyone ever really stop and think about what they say and how it affects others? No. Cause it's teh internets herp derp, I do what I want, trollface.jpg, srs bsns.

No one needs to go around shoving buttercups and roses and sunshine and rainbows down people throats because that's annoying, but goddamn, what is the point in wallowing in anger when you don't have to? Christ.

Also this is a real thing. I mean "real" as in "holy shit look at how many people this is affecting".

Yes. It is.

You complain about people making you feel bad for being transgendered but in the same breath you tell people it's the internet.

So therefore you should have absolutely no problem with me saying transphobic things to you, right? It wouldn't affect you in the slightest way? If I started posting pictures of your head on Frank N Furter, that would not hurt you? That wouldn't make you feel bad at all?

It doesn't always have to be text.

[up] No one thinks it's a problem. As evidenced by the three people who posted in this thread. Which I find ironic for a forum that's supposed to be so tolerant and accepting.

I'm not so sure that acting like a jerk to others is something that's really exclusive to the internet. I mean, it happens all the time. But maybe it has something to do with people thinking that since they're anonymous (to whatever extent) they can get away with stuff a lot easier. Also not really thinking of other people as people when on the internet.

Eh, they have more people in total.

Which is why cyber bullying is so present and people don't think it's a problem.

Also I know that's a lie. Why do you let other people get to you? They're just as real as we are, the only difference is that cyber bullies can be more emotionally and mentally destructive.

@ Tendo, in the OP: That's why I try to be unfailingly polite and try not to use sarcasm, honestly. Even if someone's gotten under my skin or said something I find to be stupid, I'm not gonna be an ass, because the moment I start acting rude, the other person gets defensive and the conversation goes out the window.

Not impossible mind you. That's the thing, we can do it, with enough work.

I don't think you understand why a lot of people use the internet in the way that you're trying to describe. It doesn't take energy to make mean jokes and screw around online - it's a way to unwind. Harmless fun. The harm, if there ever is any, is created by whoever receives these acts as harmful, usually. Of course, there are counterexamples - people being deliberately malicious - but there's always the option to dismiss it as unimportant (because it is) and enjoy yourself anyway.

If people are too fragile to deal with some unpleasantness... Well, that's kind of their problem. It's going to come up in the real world, too. And actively exposing yourself to parts of the internet where this stuff goes on when you are precious is frankly pretty dumb.

It's not that complicated an issue, really - people are going to have their fun, and if you don't want like that fun, then you don't have to participate at all. You certainly have no room to complain about people upsetting you if you put yourself out there to be upset.

Also, cyber-bullying is bullshit because it's dependent on contributory negligence on the part of the "victim" to exist in the first place.

[up][up][up]For you, perhaps. Nobody's going to force you to "be an asshole".

So that's the excuse? You can choose to ignore it?

I can shoot a baby in the face, you can ignore that too, but don't act like it's not a problem. No I'm not comparing cyber bullying to murder, I'm just saying...it's there. You can ignore it all you want, but don't act like it's not a real thing or something you can easily brush off.

But there is a difference in being malicious and teasing. I'm not talking about teasing.

Seriously? That'd be awesome. I fucking love Rocky Horror.

Don't let things bother you so much. Seriously. Water off a duck's back and all that jazz.

Also, the internet is still a hell of a lot nicer than retail. Someone makes fun of you online, you can tell them to fuck off and die. A customer makes fun of you IRL, and you've got to suck it up and deal.

Are you transgendered, DG? Cause that wasn't directed towards you.

Someone makes fun of you online, you can tell them to fuck off and die. A customer makes fun of you IRL, and you've got to suck it up and deal.

Um, so you can't just tell them to fuck off and die? Why? Because you're looking them in the eye? Isn't that just a case of "I'm on the internet so I can pretend to be tougher"?

It is a stupid thing. The only time cyber bullying is a problem is when it's from people harassing you irl.

Other wise it's "bwaaaaa! People I don't know are making fun of me. Bwaaaa! Woe is me! Why can't I turn this stupid shit off and go outside! How can I hold all these insults."

The real life equivalent is breaking down in tears cause the crazy guy by Mc Donalds called you fat.

[up][up][up][up][up]The victim can brush it off. A baby can't suddenly not have been shot in the face simply because it decides that that wouldn't be any fun. Similarly, while somebody cannot actually annihilate mean comments sent their way, they can annihilate any emotional effect by having a bit of perspective. And, if they lack the mental fortitude to do such a thing, they can avoid the situation in which they are exposed to such comments. If you know that a website is full of people who want to call you mean names, going to that website and expecting not to be called mean names is, again, pretty dumb. Irresponsible would be another way. More properly, we could call that contributory negligence.
