Nara took one step back, and surveyed their new companion. "Not in the slightest." That was directed to Hector. A grey, or like a grey. Aliens had fallen off in popularity since the orbital weapons grid had gone active thirty years ago. Nothing like being able to violently assert your sovereignty over near-Earth space to convince people you did indeed have control of it.

"And I do understand you. I think." Nara frowned hard, her hands itching. Not literally, of course, she had no allergies. But the sensation that she should be holding a weapon for this, that too many unknowns were in play.

"Very well," Qrlil said. She felt an urge to try and activate some kind of defense, but dismissed it; there was no rational reason to worry here.

She inclined her head slightly to each of them - a neutral greeting, but no more - resisted the urge to sniff towards the woman again, and stepped slightly forward. "Hello. I am Qrlil*

. And you are?"

Smiling once again, Hector nodded. "Pleased to meet you."

Egaelus looked around at the retro alien and was swimming through the mists, holding a broad sword in front of him, "HALT" he commanded, "be you friend or fiend or foe that I must vanquish" The Knight halted as he realised that it was a collective dream

App broke through another layer of the fog only to see a strange sight. A knight, an alien of some sort, and a person. "Hello, there!" he called out at them, cautiously stepping forward. Hopefully, these guys wouldn't attempt to kill him. App wasn't used to not having a gun he could use, and it was only now that he realized how much danger he was in without it. If only he could find some way to recharge it... But for that, he'd need to concentrate an energy field onto one of the two energy cubes inside his gun. A hard task.

Been going back and forth on whether to do this or not... finally decided, sure, why not.

<Hello. Please do not eat me.>

A large, ugly vulture sat perched on some medical equipment, peering with curiosity at the green reptile-thing that had scurried into the hallway it had been sitting in. The vulture had a strangely dry, sterile scent, and intelligence was clearly visible in its eyes and motions, but it was otherwise indistinguishable from any other common turkey vulture. Its words were not spoken, but went straight into its listener's head.

<It would be a very poor way to greet somebody, and this form permits me more grace than its appearance suggests.> Studying the reptile further, it vaguely recognized the form. <Though I think we may have already met — my apologies, but I am not yet familiar enough with your kind to distinguish individuals.> It offered an approximation of a bow to the reptile and added, <in case this our first meeting however, I am Kokabiel, Angel of Entropy. It is a pleasure to meet you.>

The creature stopped dead. It cocked it's head in the bird's direction and eyed it suspiciously, weapon at the ready. It's mouth hadn't seemed to move when it spoke.

After a few silent seconds, it lowered it's gun arm and said, "Don't worry. I've got my own rations. Though, I think I'd remember meeting a bird that could talk. What's an Angel?"

Kokabiel considered the lizard-thing's question. <Ask a hundred mortals what an angel is, and you will receive nearly as many answers. But it's quite irrelevant to the current topic — it is enough to say for now I am not a vulture.> It cocked its head, studying the new creature. <And as for you... you are very obviously not a mere lizard. You speak, and you show clear intelligence. Might I ask your name, what manner of being you are, and what brings you to this place? If not the dreamworld, than this particular fragment of it.>

The creature gazed at the puzzling vulture a few seconds more, almost as if staring at it would reveal it's secret for telepathic communication, and waited patiently for it to finish. It flinched at the slur.

After the vulture was done, the creature just sort of stood there, unsure as to what to make of this development, and unsure how to answer. It took a breath, gathered it's thoughts and, hesitantly, it began. "My name is Angua, of a race called the Kasuar. Speaking of this place- where exactly are we?"

Seeing how Angua had flinched, Kokabiel said, <my apologies is I chose my words poorly. I meant no offense, and shall not repeat the mistake again.> It hopped off its perch and began to walk down the hallway, opposite where Angua had come in. It said, <and as for our location — well, relatively, we are in a hospital within which I sense a... well, to me, this is a comforting place. I find its energies familiar and, I confess, oddly pleasurable. But I cannot imagine mortals feel likewise.>

<As for our absolute location?> It stopped, and turned back to Angua, genuinely considering the question. <Such answers are shrouded even to me and my Creator. This place is dreamlike, but it is not a dream. Or at least, not a dream in the traditional sense, though it has the metaphysics of one. To an extent.>

Angua walked with the bird down to the far end of the hall. "You find this place comforting?" She gestured to the abandoned medical equipment haphazardly strewn about the hall, then shook her head. "You must have had very different experiences with hospitals than I have. But this place- the fog, the open spaces- I've only met one other person here so far and he tried to steal my bag- this place reminds me of something." A few more seconds of silence passed before Angua all of a sudden asked, "... Am I dead?"

Egaelus looked confused at his sword, then at the retro guy that entered through a stairwell, "Calm down, Egaelus, there must be a logical explanation for all of these lore. If this be a dream, mayest I ask thee where upon this place is on yonder hill?" he asked one person, App in particular. He was unfamiliar with the green vulture and thought it would be a fine specimen upon his wall later.

He looked at Nara and smiled gratefully, glad to see some sanity in this vision.

<I cannot provide a definitive answer either way.> Kokabiel continued to walk down the hallway. <And yes, I find this place comforting, in a manner of speaking, for its energies are familiar. Terribly unhealthy for the human psyche, and probably those of Kasuar as well, however.> Black smoke silently wrapped around the door at the hallway's end, and very gently pushed it open.

Kokabiel walked through the opened doors and quietly flew onto a nearby desk. Through a window, it could see a nursery with the Chosen of the Blood of the Astrologer — or Samira Hosseini, as she called herself — and a woman it did not recognize, the latter of whom was putting baby clothes in incubators. Its 'voice' audible only to Angua, it said, <we should leave them be for the time being. For now, I must ask: would it bother you if you were dead?> Peering quizzically at Angua, it added, <at the very least, it would deal with a number of difficult questions. Further, as far as afterlives envisioned by mortals go, this is slightly on the high end. And demonstrate there is more to existence after death than the sad state of the Rephaim.>

Samira pretended not to notice Kokabiel. The last thing she wanted or needed was that thing around.

Until Snowy Foxes gets more time, I'd like Kokabiel and anyone around him to hang around outside the nursery so Snowy doesn't get left horribly behind.

Jonathan Sandusky ran for his life.

He couldn't hear them any more, but he knew they were behind him; even though this was the first time he had escaped in his dreams, he knew from experience that they filled Eternity Bastion. Even if he managed to make it to the mainland, he'd stand out in his orange prison jumpsuit. He'd never be able to fully escape.

Jonathan turned a corner, glanced behind him to see where they were, and ran headlong into a wall that hadn't been there before. He pushed himself to his feet and brushed his long, matted black hair out of his eyes. A painting? He looked around the room. He was in an art gallery of some kind.

Eternity Bastion definitely didn't have an art gallery. But then, this was a dream, wasn't it? Although it didn't feel like an ordinary dream.

Unsure of what to do, Jonathan began walking in no particular direction hoping to find an exit. Wisps of black smoke curled around his right arm, constantly sending a light tingle up it. He wandered around a corner and saw an old man in a sweater vest, a cloaked man, and a... horse? "Hello?" he asked. "Anyone want to tell me what the hell's going on here?"

Angua canted her head to the side, puzzled. "Well- yeah it would bother me if I were dead. It would bother most people. You listen to the way that most people talk about it, you'd start to think it was a bad thing." The sarcasm was a little hard to place, moreso for the Kasuar's unfamiliarity with the subtleties of the language than anything. "And you say that this is one of the better afterlives? Rephaim?"

Zacharias stared in confusion at the man in the orange jumpsuit. But who knew what he was running from? Zacharias had known prison bars himself, for the crime of speaking for what was right. So — though wary — Zacharias gave the man a polite nod and said, "that appears to be the great question of this place. What, as you so succinctly put it" — his voice was completely free of sarcasm and irony — "the hell is going on here? Why is there a silhouette-bird over there? Why have I passed by two paintings of arch-demons? And so and so forth."

He shrugged, and added, "but nothing's tried to kill me yet. I'll count that as a victory. And it's quite fascinating here. The general consensus is a quasi-dream. Like a dream, but not. In the way that tofu is like meat. Or perhaps in the way meat is like tofu?" He tapped his foot. "Hmm, yes, I think the meat-to-tofu metaphor is more accurate. An ordinary dream is tofu, but this is meatier. Juicier. More flavorful and real... what would it be like to taste meat for the first time after a lifetime of tofu? Aside from the hideous sickness? Probably unpleasant..."

Kokabiel gave a shrug of its wings and said, <most people don't fear death, but the unknown that comes after it. If you were dead, that fear would be removed. And yes, this is one of the more pleasant afterlives. Better than Sheol, Mictlan, Irkalla, most of Hades, or the Inferno, certainly.> It picked at one of its talons as it considered the next question. <And the Rephaim? Well, let us begin by metaphor. You are aware when a baby is born — or perhaps hatched in your case — there are certain things left behind? Afterbirth, eggshells, and so forth?>

Angua jumped in before he was finished. "-But what about losing all the things that made your life good? That you lived for?" She seemed to turn wistful for a moment, but Kokabiel blinked and the moment was gone.

Instead she nodded in response to his inquiry. "Mhm."

Kokabiel studied Angua. <Oh. Yes. My apologies, I forget — and I sincerely mean no offense by this, for I envy you — how permanent the ephemeral seems to the mortal mind.> Its head hung low in apology, and a hint of sorrow, as it considered. <I suppose, then, the loss would be a great torment. And if you truly are dead, you have my sympathies. May you soon meet those you cared for in life, and rebuild anew.> It was oblivious to the implications of technically wishing all of Angua's loved ones dead.

It suspected Angua was only feigning polite interest in the nature of the Rephaim, and decided it would not bring it up unless explicitly asked. The metaphor could complete itself anyways.

Jonathan snorted. "Pfft. Great. So no one knows what this is about, and the nearest analogue is meat and tofu..."

He absently glanced at the nearest picture and froze. It was a painting of a man, slightly past middle age. His hair was immaculate, albeit graying, and he was clean-shaven. His suit bespoke modesty and honesty, as did his eyes. He had a pipe in his mouth, its gray smoke curling up around his face. He was standing in a richly ornamented room. Everything, in fact, pointed towards him being kind and trustworthy.

Except the title of the painting: Downward Spiral No. 2: The Deceiver.

Jonathan's hands twitched. He wanted to rip the painting from the wall and tear it to shreds. Burn the pieces. Erase it from memory. Make it so that it never existed. And yet, there was something about the place... It didn't seem right.

Instead, he consoled himself with glaring angrily at it. The smoke around his arm twitched, and a mild shock of pain lanced up Jonathan's arm.

Doltur and Kit looked around in the fog, not really able to see anything moving about. The figure in front of them, just sort of...faded away. "Well, that cleared things up." "Forget it. Let's explore around, see what else we can find." "Well...alright. Should we sheathe these things?" "Probably, don't want to give anyone the wrong idea." Doltur says, and the both of them sheathe the rapiers under their cloaks. They walk into the building, and begin moving through the hallways. As they moved about, the two of them stumbled across a...art gallery? Odd...but ok. They walk through the paintings, not really looking at most of them, until they spot a rather...interesting figure. He seems like a normal human, except for the wisps of black smoke moving up from his arm, and the fact that he seemed rather annoyed at a nearby painting. Both of them walk over to the man, Kit's tails wagging as she walked. As they approached, they saw a few others. A cloaked figure, a horse, nothing particularly interesting from the others.

"Well, it is nice to see other people at least. Now, if one of you could tell us where in the blue birds we are, that would be great." Doltur says. Kit raises a hand in commeseration.

"What my friend means is, we have no idea where we are at the moment, or how we got here really. If you could help us, we would really appreciate it." Kit said, regarding each man with her dark amber eyes.

Angua stared at the vulture, wondering whether it intentionally implied it hoped the ones she cared for in life would join her in the land of the dead. After a few moments, she decided to simply drop it. "So you don't actually know if this is the afterlife?"

Zacharias looked at the painting. "He looks pleasant. Doesn't mean much, though." He glanced down at the title and grimaced. "Doesn't mean much at all."

Then he turned to the next pair to enter, only tangentially registering Kit's strangeness. "I really wish this place had a brochure. Ah, hmm, anyone got a pen? Some scrap paper? No? Yes?" Without waiting for a reply, he continued, "no matter. Nobody has the slightest idea where we are. Uh... what was I thinking about? Like... something about meat? Like, steak to hamburger? No, no, that wasn't... ah! Yes, this is basically the meat to an ordinary dream's tofu! Essentially. God, I hope you know what tofu is."

<I have absolutely no idea>, Kokabiel said. <I'm immortal, which decreases the probability greatly. But as I am associated with entropy, it's fair to assume I could stumble upon this place by accident.> It looked around the room, thoughtfully. <Not being in possession of all the answers is quite liberating, actually.>

"For once, I agree." Kit said, rubbing at her chin.

When Zachiaras mentioned tofu, Kit shook her head.

"No, I don't. You Doltur?"

"Sounds like one of the foods out of Sere, but I'm not sure. But I think I get his point."

"What, you don't think I do?" Kit asked, crossing her arms.

"I didn't want to say anything..." Doltur said, smirking. "Oh, I'm Doltur Valen." He said, realizing they hadn't introduced themselves yet.

Zacharias looked at Kit, just now noticing the fur. He possessed enough social tact to realize that pressing Kit on the topic would be impolite, and instead decided to simply ignore it.

He said, "I am Zacharias Hosseini, linguist. Now, he," Zacharias pointed at Vince, "is Vinicio Acquatio, geneticist, that's Nilas, horse, and..." he looked over at Jonathon. "I'm sorry, I don't have your name. You can introduce yourself as you like. For now..." He walked over to Kit and Doltur, offered his hand, and said, "it is my pleasure to meet you both." Studying their form and dress, he added, "I'm getting the impression you're not from where I am. I don't suppose the names 'Iran' or 'Persia' mean anything to you?"
