"Mayonaka ni koboreta chi ga tsuki no shikai-nai de insan'na shīn o nokoshimasu."

Throat slit. Wrists slit. Torso cleaved open. Blood everywhere. The same pattern of horrific wounds on every single last corpse. All eight of the victims found in the last two months exhibited the very same patterns of wounds, the same injuries, the same everything. But it was impossible to identify just what had caused these horrific injuries. One would assume it was inflicted by an exceptionally large knife, but even that was impossible to discern. Someone had cleaved into these people and spilled as much blood as was possible with something. But the only leads anyone had were the notes. Each were identical to the last, the same taunting message, the same writing, the same name... but impossible to trace, regardless of how hard it was attempted.

The police force was completely and utterly at a loss. How could they trace the untraceable? How was this even possible?

Of course, it would not be the local law enforcement that solved these crimes.

The murders were the work of a magus. They threatened the secrecy of magecraft, something that could not be tolerated. The Association would not stand by and wait for these crimes to reveal what they had kept secret for so long to the masses. At the same time, the Holy Church had no tolerance for such acts against humanity. Seeking to beat the Association to stopping the murders, they have deployed their own force to put a stop to them. Finally, local magi have reason for interest as well. For three of the eight victims were magi themselves. The two most recent murders weren't magi, but a young couple...

There is no telling when Caravaggio will strike again, or who will be next...

For Akiyama Chieko, today was a fairly normal day. Normal, of course, included preparing for practicing her magecraft. As a magus-in-training, Chieko had to be diligent and focused in her studies of the family craft. She also had to ensure that she had plenty of time in which to do it. Depending on how much she had to do during the day, this sometimes included skipping sleep for the night. However, today was not one of those crowded, busy days. For today was the first day of summer vacation.

Chieko, for all her investment in hard work and dedication, did enjoy the break that summer vacation gave her. If anything, how much hard work she put into things made her appreciate it even more. Of course she still studied her magecraft, but the absence of homework and school itself meant that she had more free time to do things she enjoyed. Not that she didn't like studying and practicing her magecraft, but it was hard work. In any case, at the moment she was making use of this free time before preparing to work on her magecraft.

And getting her older, adopted brother to practice his magecraft. The lazy idiot.

But for now, she was preparing to have a nice walk to the Sagen City shopping district, to drop by the book shop, and(depending how she was feeling) the ice cream shop as well. The fourteen-year-old girl slipped her shoes on before opening the front door. It was a nice day out, the sun was shining in full force, the weather was nice...

Chieko smiled, and took a step out the door.

It wasn't often that a child would be found totally alone downtown. Granted, sometimes children would be out on their own, but there was usually more then one in those cases. But a single child...? It would look as if they were lost.

Alexia Daniels was not lost. She was one her way to a certain spot in the city that was, previously, where a particularly grisly murder had taken place, but she was not lost. As she maneuvered her way through the crowds(some of them wondering what a lone little girl was doing here), she contemplated her task. It was undeniably a simple one, but the difficulty of the task was thus far unknown to her. Find and kill the murderer called Caravaggio. The church had instructed her to do this due to her fairly rampant success in eliminating magi. To think, someone permanently a child would have such success in slaying even the most ruthless of rogue magi. Perhaps it was that her abilities were so unexpected?

At the thought of her state of permanent childhood, Alexia frowned. But that wasn't something to dwell on, and she quickly sped up her pace. She needed to get to her goal, after all.

Ideally, when one went about on secret business, it would be best to not to draw attention to oneself. Unfortunately for the Welsh magus, his appearance caught many people's eye. In the train where Anwyn was currently seated however, the magus had a reserved cabin, first class. There, him and his associates were able to relax outside of the view of the civilians. After all, an uncommonly feminine European man in a black suit was not a sight most Japanese people saw every day.

Glancing outside the cabin windows, Anywn observed the landscape with interest. For him, it was an inspiration for future "works of art". Unfortunately for the self titled artist, his works are often misunderstood and incomprehensible. Still, that didn't keep the man from trying to better his abysmal talent, unknowing of his limits.

Aster tapped her fingers rhythmically against the wooden countertop, humming to the tune pumping out from the shopping center speakers. She watched closely as a young couple strolled past the windows of her shop. They were sharing an ice cream cone, and laughing, taking in the day and each other as young lovers should. It was a cute little sight, and it just tickled her pink. Some may think it rude that she was watching them like that, but she couldn't help it. Aster loved watching humans.

And why shouldn’t she? After all, there was a lot to love about humans in general. Their quirky personalities, their oddly pleasing sense of aesthetics. Their resourcefulness, their tenacity, the way they always rose to the occasion when called upon. And how they did so much with so little time... It was little wonder playing with them was so much fun. Then again...

The bodies were found discarded in an alley early this morning. The victims, Chizuru Yamato and Saito Kamiyama, were discovered savaged and mutilated, their bodies mangled in a seemingly ritualistic manner. The note found at the scene, signed by a still unidentified figure calling himself “Caravaggio” seems to connect this to the other recent murder victims, whose bodies were all found in similar states with similar notes. The police are still investigating...

There was a lot not to love about humans too. Aster sighed, turning off the old wall-mounted television set. That made eight now. Eight completely unpunished murders. In ‘‘her’’ city, no less.

“Ohhh, my cute little Sagen, what has this mean man done to you?” the scantily clad siren moaned melodramatically. Her poor, poor city. To think that such a thing could happen here. And of course, the police were doing nothing to stop him. They probably didn’t even know what to do. Police in Sagen weren’t used to crime. It’s why she’d settled here in the first place. Lowest crime rates in Japan. The law around here probably wasn’t even prepared for a regular serial killing, much less one perpetrated by a mage.

Of course, Aster had no evidence to support this claim (she rarely did), but given the exotic-sounding foreign name (Caravaggio? Like the artist?), and the grisly ritualism and mystique surrounding the killings, it was hardly a stretch of the imagination to call this magic crime. Magicrime, if you would.

She leaned back behind the shop counter, pushing her glasses up the bridge of her nose. What to do, what do... She couldn’t just sit back and do nothing (although she certainly wanted to). Action had to be taken. She couldn’t just let some crazier-than-a- shithouse-rat mage do what he pleased with her little Sagen. It just wasn’t right. But on the other hand...

“The fuzz is still looking for me to pay my taxes,” she said, running her fingers through her thick black hair. She caught a knot and untangled it, wincing as she tried to think. Okay, so she’d just have to go out at night, when the muscle of the po-po wouldn’t be out and about. Oh sure, they’d be a few strays running around, but...

She slid off the glasses, polishing them with her shirt until she could see her reflection. They wouldn’t be a problem. Slipping the glasses back on, Aster nodded with affirmation. It was a plan. Aster gave the television a lazy wave, and it presented her with highjacked footage from the mall’s security cameras. It’d be a while before they closed shop. She’d have to wait until then to sneak out. Do some investigating of her own. Until then, it was back to waiting and watching.

Feel free to have someone notice the shop and drop by.

Takeo sighed heavily. He was leaning against a tree in the front yard of his home, happily dozing away. He was finally able to not think about school, which was good. He was able to just relax in the shade on a warm day. This was the life, no?

There wasn't a care in the world for Takeo. The recent murders were troublesome but that felt so far away in his mind. He was more worried about making sure he caught up on sleep, having not been able to sleep in very far this morning thanks to his sister. What was with her, anyway? Waking up early and doing stuff on the first day of summer? She should take a break for a change.

Meredith sighed. She had been getting attention but not nearly as much as her companion. This alone didn't bother her that much.

However, it was her other companion that she was interested in, "So, what kind of people are your grandparents?" she asked, just curious.

12-tan was wandering around the streets as normal, her katana cunningly hidden inside the handle of an umbrella that was being used to keep the sun from being a bright, annoying nuisance. People occasionally gave the oddly dressed—she was either wearing a dress styled after a kimono or just couldn't put a kimono on—child strange looks, but her ears were safely tucked away under her hair and she didn't really mind the looks. People were more likely to ask her where her parents are then give her icecream if she looked!

Then... someone familiar wandered into her field of vision, looking exactly the same as they had last time they were here, years ago! She hadn't brought icecream with her from Italy on that occasion but maybe she had this time? It would be nice if that was the case, so...

"Church-girl!" the Dead Apostle Ancestor exclaimed, running and attempting to hug the poor girl.

"Quiet. Studious. Their house is pretty," Hitomi answered, continuing to gaze out of the window as the landscape sped past and with an unlit cigarette between her fingers. Maybe she had forgotten to light it or maybe the outside world was just that interesting. Either way, it had been there for over ten minutes and neither of the association mages had bothered to raise the point with her, yet.

Yep, today was nice, warm, and-

... Chieko frowned as her eyes met the sleeping form of her brother, who was silently leaned up against the tree out front, fast asleep. Typical Takeo, lying around and snoozing on such a bright and sunny day. Now scowling, she walked towards her brother's sleeping form and folded her arms. She looked down at the older boy, tapping her foot as she did. Well, how best to wake him up? There was several ways to go about it...

After a moment, Chieko had decided.

"Onii-san..." she started, slowly winding up her kick, "Wake..."

She kicked, her right foot striking her older brother in the side, "UP!"

There really wasn't much time, even with her superhuman speed and reflexes, to react to the sudden appearance of a familiar face. There she was, the Dead Apostle Ancestor that had been written off the elimination list, mainly because it was far more dangerous to try and kill her then just letting her live. She didn't actually do anything dangerous, in any case... That said, Alexia would rather not be hugged by her so suddenly.

That said, it was kind of hard to avoid. Almost toppling over from impact, Alexia managed to stay on her feet.

"... Hello," she said, her voice fairly level.

Hotaru sighed as she walked down the road aimlessly. At the moment, she would rather have been at home; but her mother had pretty much thrown her out and told her to "go do something fun". Unfortunately, fun was not something that came easily to Hotaru. In fact, it was practically a foreign concept.

Even if she were the type of person to take breaks; now was not the time to do so. There was a serial killer in town; and she needed to have some means of fighting this person should they attack her or anyone she cared about. Though she wasn't very worried about her own safety; she was concerned that anyone who wanted to kill her might come after her loved ones as well.

However, there wasn't much she could do about that at the moment. She didn't have anymore information on the killer; and didn't feel much like snooping around to find any. At the moment, her only option was to wait for whoever it was to make another move.

After much thought on the subject, she headed towards the ice cream shop. Ice cream usually helped her to think.

Miki, meanwhile, was fast asleep in her bed. Summer vacation was the perfect opportunity to sleep in; and she never missed a chance to sleep. Noone in her family bothered to try to wake her; as they knew she hadn't gotten any sleep the previous night... well, that, and they valued their limbs.

"WAAH!" He cried out in pain as he was forced into rolling over by the sheer force of the kick, "Owowowowow! What'd you do that for?!" He pointed with one hand at his sister and with the other held his side, "You coulda broke something you know!"

"I see," Meredith stole yet another glance at the unlit cig. It was unusual, to say the least. She frowned at how the response was kind of weak, then again they hardly knew each other. She supposed she was just nosy.

"Oy, you going to light that cigarette?" Meredith smiled as she said it, hoping to prod a reaction from her. She admittedly wasn't trying very hard, but she didn't feel like starting anything major at the moment.

"Don't stay out too late, boy," a cantankerous old man's voice croaked out from one of the inner rooms of the great house. "Wouldn't want that damned serial killer to get you."

"Don't worry, Grandpa. I'll be back by dinner. Going now." The boy slipped his shoes at the entrance to the house and walked out into the sunlight.

As befits an actor of my calibre, Nanashi thought, watching the joss sticks smoulder away at the tombstone, I'm a damned hypocrite.

He'd never crossed paths with Shigeru Yamazaki before, never seen his face or heard his voice. The boy was just a name and a figure to him. All he knew was that if he hadn't been killed in the car accident that claimed both his parents, leaving an elderly couple living off a meagre pension in some nondescript shack on the edge of Sagen... he'd be fourteen this year.

That was all he needed to know. From there, it was just a matter of tweaking people's memories in the right direction to create a Nanashi-sized gap for him to fill in, and the dearly departed was suddenly back in the land of the living, no questions asked. It came almost naturally by now, like a hermit crab changing shells, but a faint, lingering distaste remained. So this was his woefully-inadequate penance: a makeshift memorial ceremony held in front of a neglected grave, by the one who was responsible for supplanting the deceased in the memories of his loved ones.

If I was any better at Magecraft, I wouldn't have to do this. But I guess this is the only way for me to survive... "Sorry, pal," he whispered. "I promise I'll take good care of your grandparents. Just let me borrow your name for a few more years..."

The spirits were silent, and "Shigeru Yamazaki" bowed and left.

The sun was already high in the sky by the time Nanashi reached the city centre, and there was time to kill - but nothing interesting ever happened in a sleepy little town like Sagen.

He passed a billboard and checked himself, cursing silently. Something interesting had happened, but it wasn't the type of thing that anyone would've wished for. The Caravaggio case was still the centre of media attention even after two whole months, and the police and public had been worked up into a futile frenzy as they struggled to pinpoint the perpetrator, their every failure documented in embarrassing detail by the press, who weren't much help either.

There was an unusual taint of... wrongness, he sensed, about the whole affair, above and beyond the usual serial killings that he'd read about. No; it was something that made his Magic Circuits crawl...

Nanashi shook his head. He wanted nothing to do with the world of mages - not after it had rejected him for his "birth defect", as he'd always regarded it. But there was no resisting the siren call of Magecraft once you'd heard the summons, and there were times when he wondered what he'd do with the rest of this abnormally-prolonged life. Perhaps some day, when there was treatment that didn't involve sacrificing people to the Holy Grail or deals with all sorts of devils, demons, vampires or other supernatural entities... But that was wishful thinking. Whatever the case was, he was not prepared to end it at the hands of some nutjob with a knife.

Shrugging, he slipped his hands into his pockets and trudged down the sidewalk, his mood completely incongruous with that of a student on summer vacation. As he passed by an alley, an ancient-looking store - sans signboard, a rarity in Sagen - caught his eye, against all laws of advertising and product placement.

That's odd. Haven't seen this shop around before.

The familiar itch resurfaced at the nape of his neck, and he entered.

The shop door's bell tinkled, causing Aster to look up in surprise. Rather inconvenient time for business. As a matter of fact, she'd just been about to take her afternoon beauty nap. But...

She looked her potential customer up and down for a sec, inspecting him. He didn't look like a terribly bad sort. Hell, he might even be fun to play with, she thought, grinning. She could put off the nap a few more minutes.

Announcing herself, she said, "Welcome! To Aster's Oddjobs and Antiquities! We can get you anything but a refund, no questions asked!" She snerked a little at that one. She got up out of her chair to meet the new customer. "So, what're you looking for?"

Nanashi eyed the storekeeper - Aster, he assumed - critically.

She certainly didn't seem the type to be running a store this old - she didn't appear much older than he did, come to think about it - and from what he could tell from her dress code, she probably hadn't been expecting customers. He was glad, at least, that the counter blocked his view from the waist down... Okay, so maybe "glad" wasn't the right word, but having the hormones of a 14-year-old and the mind of an older man did that to you sometimes. He felt his cheeks burn against his will.

"Uh... I-I'm just looking around," he muttered.

More importantly, though, the itch he'd felt had now intensified as every Magic Circuit in his body resonated with the environment in the shop.

So much magic... a mage's atelier? No, this feels different. The energies from the shop were familiar. He spared the items on sale a cursory glance - artefacts of man-made origin, they shared a similar signature to the magecraft that he was familiar with. But the shopkeeper... no, her aura was far stronger and felt older, almost primal in its intensity. And it was then that he realised that the warmth in his body wasn't just teenage impulses going out of control.

"Who - no, what - are you?" Nanashi croaked, feeling his Bounded Fields springing up as the malformed circuits flared to life.

"Did you bring icecream with you this time?" the white-haired girl asked hopefully, continuing to act like an oversized cape to the other girl. If she hadn't... well, there was a shop selling icecream right behind them and the church girl owed her icecream! So did Zelly but he never came to this part of Japan, so that didn't really matter...

"No, look at the signs," Hitomi said, gesturing at the sign thanking people for not smoking. It was a pity, really, since this compartment had better ventilation than the vast majority and there wasn't that much that you could burn. Oh well.

"Ohhhh! Someone's particularly sensitive, I see. Been a bit since someone's picked up on it this quickly. Well, alright. Since you asked so nicely..."

She stood up, and removed the glasses, unsealing the eyes behind them. No, unsealing wasn't the right word here. Releasing was better, like something had just been uncaged. It certainly felt that way. Those eyes, those intoxicatingly red eyes... something behind them felt alive. Dangerous. Like they were a life completely separate of their master, merely kept chained to her instead of a part of her. There was an exotic, irresistable beauty in the feeling of danger those eyes inspired. It made you want them, consequences be damned. They were siren's eyes.

Her voice, now seemingly thick with passion, and delightfully overpowering, whispered, "I'm a shopkeeper, and a True Devil." She left the countertop and walked up to Nanashi, giving him a good, long look at what she was wearing. Or rather, in some cases, wasn't. She ran a warm finger up his chin, still whispering smoothly, "What's the matter? Cat got your tongue? Relax, I'm not gonna hurt ya."

Things had gone from peaceful to pear-shaped in a matter of seconds. Nanashi could feel the heat of Aster's Mystic Eyes as they latched onto him, an unnatural, demonic suggestion that felt so seductive...

He struggled to resist, every fibre in his body screaming conflicting messages as his circuits rebelled against the unwelcome intrusion, raising barrier after barrier - and leaving him rooted to the spot, barely able to take a step back. Through the thick haze of the mystic compulsion, he barely heard her say,

"...True Devil..."

That explained everything. Not a half-breed, but a pure-blooded Fiend, capable of magic far surpassing even the best of human mages. There was no escape from beings such as these.

She stepped from behind the counter, giving him an eyeful, but his mind barely registered her figure or the words that escaped her lips, taxed as it was by the overflow to his sensorium. What he did see was her closing in, raising one finger to his chin...

NO! he wanted to scream, but his mouth failed him.

She touched his chin, and Nanashi dropped to his knees as the Bounded Fields which surrounded him suddenly discharged in a blaze of light, heat... and pain.

I'm going to assume that the sensory overload that caused the Power Incontinence also made him black out for a minute.

When Nanashi awoke, it wasn't in the morgue like he'd been expecting, but in a nice, soft bed, tucked up to his chin in thick, warm blankets. Again, to his delight and surprise, he found he wasn't even restrained, or held down. Aster sat next to him in an armchair, glasses again perched on the bridge of her nose.

"Rise and shine," she flipped through his wallet, "Nanashi. You've been asleep for the last five days. Time to wake up." she said, ruffling his hair.

"Sleeping out front of the house? Typical stupid, lazy onii-san," Chieko admonished, folding her arms once more and straightening. She looked down at her sprawled brother with a look of disappointment typically reserved him. Chieko sighed and took a step back, shaking her head. Why was it that her brother was so... lazy?! Her parents hand ensured that she was a hard worker, so why didn't he have any of that work ethic?

"You haven't done any practice in days," Chieko said. He'd know full well what practice she was talking about, talking about it outdoors by name was inadvisable, "Either you do some now, or you come with me on my walk downtown and do it afterwards. Do something!"

Alexia shook her head.

"I didn't bring ice cream," she replied. Her Japanese was pretty good, actually. Aside from some slightly-off pronunciation in longer words, she was fluent in the language. She'd been taught long ago, in preparation for her first visit to Japan. "I have a job to do, I didn't think about just bringing ice cream along."

The Twelfth Dead Apostle Ancestor. The one that was written off, a strict order not to attempt to kill her. Not only is she completely harmless towards people from any angle, but it was vastly dangerous to attempt to. Failure would mean an entire country sinking. As it stood now? She bought ice cream and did't hurt anyone. Attacking her would be incredibly dangerous by comparison.

That didn't meant that the tiny church executor needed to hang around and help her get ice cream. "Could you let go?"

The shop, specifically, was one that didn't normally sell icecream but, given the True Devil's policy of providing anything and everything demanded, 12-tan had succeeded in getting some on those occasions she'd ended up in there.

The throbbing in Nanashi's head had replaced the searing pain in his Magic Circuits, which was an improvement by any standards. That, and the fact that he was still alive, which was usually the exception to any encounters with the Fiendish Kind.

Said True Devil was presently flipping through his wallet, glasses back on - but, much to his chagrin, not having done the same for any other articles of clothing. He twitched.

"Nobody's called me 'Nanashi' in the past thirty years, at least... and you certainly couldn't have figured that out from the contents of my wallet." Well, if she was going to kill me, she would've done so by now. "So would you mind giving that back? In case you haven't realised, I have some... 'issues', shall we say, with personal space," he muttered weakly, gesturing to the smouldering patch on the floor where he'd been previously. "Also: five days, and the carpet's still smoking?"

At least there was one thing he could determine about his new acquaintance - she was definitely a trickster-type. It didn't automatically preclude malicious intent, but at least it ensured that as long as she remained amused, she'd be less likely to kill him...

Hold that thought. He blanched as he wondered just what her definition of "amusement" was, and frantically started making plans for escape - most of which would've ended up in complete and utter failure.

"Why the rush? Not like there's anything important in here. Fake ID, expired coupons, no credit, and no debit. Had to probe your mind to even get your real name," she handed the wallet back, airquoting, "Shigeru Yamazaki."

She settled back in the chair. "You kind of surprised me back there, though. All I wanted to do was play with you a little, and you went and lost it soon as I touched you. Practically blew up in my face. You really should try to control that, you know. Girls don't like it." she said with a grin, the innuendo lost on neither of them.

"Welp," she said, rising and stretching, "you're in my bed, that must mean you're my guest. What can I get you? Coffee? Tea? Scones?"

"The lady in here has icecream, I'm sure she'll sell it to us!" 12-tan said, rushing through the door to the Devil's shop in a flutter of hair and strange clothing. Once inside, she shouted hello in a cheerful voice and shut her umbrella. The exuberance she displayed may have contributed to the very FIRST set of Executor's being unable to track her down. She was rather too energetic when compared to most of her kind...

"I'll live," the native girl said, stretching a little and glancing at her watch. Two minutes to go, if there wasn't anything unexpected going on to slow the trains down. Japanese trains ran on time, after all, and nothing exceptional had happened to ruin their journey this time.

"Well, you could get me home, for one thing. Failing which, a spot of green tea would be nice." Nanashi was surprised that he still had enough energy to joke. "Seriously, as long as we're not out to kill each other - and I think we've established that by now - what manner of place is this? I've spent quite some time in Sagen, and I've never seen you or your shop around even once."

He didn't want to add that "quite some time" meant thirty years in the least, and that he probably wouldn't have wanted to see the shop in the first case, even if he had known of its existence. If she'd probed his brain like she claimed - no mean feat, but he wouldn't have put it past a being of such power - she'd have known all that by now.

"Oh, and before I forget... would you kindly put some pants on? You never know when some impressionable young kids might come in-"

"HELLO? ANYBODY IN?"

"-See what I mean?"

Alexia quietly followed the Dead Apostle Ancestor into the shop, before taking a quick glance around once inside. Something was very... strange here. She couldn't put her finger on it... while her skills were carefully trained in honing in on rogue magi, they couldn't just pick up anything and pinpoint it.

As such, she just felt like something was odd here.

"Hello?"

"Oh, dear. The toad, the monkey, and the dog have all screwed up."
