It came from the stars... and gifted us with life.

Somewhere around the middle ages this large, white machine smashed into the middle of the ground. No one knows where it came from, why it's here, or what it even does. It spilled its waste upon the world and that waste is known as Ether. It fused with the planet. The grass, animals, insects, all of it became contaminted with this foreign energy. However, their bodies adapted to it. In all reality, it wasn't harmful. It actually sprung mankind into a new age. The age of magic and technology.

As the humans studied the large mechanical structure. They learned more about it and how to utilize the energy bestowed upon them. The years pass. Wars happen. History will do as history does. Now, in the year 22XX, there exists a single, very powerful influence on the entirety of the world. The Atlus Presidium.

The Atlus Presidium offers countless jobs to young individuals. They can be combat officers or secretaries, the Atlus Presidium offers it all. Benefits go to the family, all that good stuff.


Now down to the nitty-gritty, how Ether works. Ether is a substance that exists in the air, the ground, and in the bodies of everything organic. It's an energy to be put to use.

  • Artificial Magic: Artifical Magic is the use of Drive Weapons/Equipment/Devices/etc. with already made 'code' to work. It serves a single function. Generators to power supplies? Artifical Magic. Drive Weapons to blow shit up? Artifical Magic.
    • Combat: Artifical Magic Drive Weapon (AMD Ws) can be used in conjuction with a person's natural control of Ether so.. it serves as a focus for the user. Drive Weapons come in different shapes and sizes, most are unique to the user.
  • Magic: The manipulation of Ether and it's contents. This is essentially the classic magic deal. Magical circles to fire off projectiles at the opponent or to heal wounds. The basics.
  • Ki: Ki is a much more refined form of Ether. It's not as powerful or expansive, but it's very efficient. Sacrificing variety for efficiency, Ki mostly consists of ki blasts, empowered punches and kicks, essentially turning the body into a weapon. It can be used to heal ones own wounds, however.
    • Spiritual Humans: Most of the time ki users aren't accepted into the AP academy based on their use of ki energy. Ether and Psychic abilities are much more versatile than that of ki. The monks, shrine maidens, etc. that practice the use of ki consider themselves separate from the Atlus Presidium.
  • Psychic: A strange occurence in Ether-based life forms. Instead of the Ether leaving the body, it falls inward. Overall it has positive effects. The brain, now beyond the limits of the normal human body, can manipulate their surroundings in assorted ways. Telekinesis, Mind Reading, this sort of thing.
  • Nature: This is reserved for the youkai. Naturally, since they're a spirit of the Earth, they manipulate the element/power they have control over.
    • Half Human/Youkai: These do exist in the world, having properties of both a youkai and a mortal human. They can have mastery over both the Natural Element they derive from their parents or use Ether as a normal human. However, the extent to which it can be used is limited.
  • Spiritual Energies: Exorcism slips, artifacts and what not fall under this category. Reserved for shrine maidens and the like.

Species

  • Humans: The typical fair. Humans are capable of using Ether, Psychic abilities, and ki. Plus tied with an Drive Weapon make them a force to be reckoned with.
  • Youkai: Nature spirits that have been around since the dawn of time. They can appear to be human, some sort of monster, animals, they have many different shapes and sizes.
    • Evolution of Humans and Youkai: Youkai feel threatened by the expanse of technology and magic. Once worshipped, now cast aside like nothing. Some feel the need to rebel against the AP and try and set things straight, others just accept the world as it is and move on.
    • Types of Youkai: There are youkai for the basic elements, fire, water, wind, Earth. Youkai for different types of animals, even objects like umbrellas. Those manifest if a spirit takes them over, however. So yes, variety is key.
  • Human/Youkai Hybrid: Beings that possess both attributes of human and youkai. They're rare, though.

Question, drive weapons are normally for traditional mages and maybe non-magical adepts who want to fight or are they normally used by everyone?

[up] Drive Weapons come in different shapes and sizes. Swords, staves, bow and arrows, stuff of the sort. The AP distributes them so if someone isn't part of the AP, they aren't getting a Drive Weapon.

  • Age: She doesn't like to talk about it
  • Gender: Female
  • Race: Yōkai 
  • Appearance: Normally not quite this intimidating
  • Personality: Calm, relaxed, and collected. A natural born mediator, who thinks deeply, listens closely, and considers wisely. She's strict at times, but only for good reason, and is always willing to hear out both sides. Selfless and kind, to a degree mocked by her fellow yōkai (it's what earned her the name). She ignores it though, honestly and wholeheartedly believing the world can be made a better place if people try to actually understand one another. However, as a warning, do not take this to mean she is a pushover. She is not.
  • Backstory: A long lived kitsune, back from the dawn of medieval times. Well known for her kindness and generosity as well as her beauty, Zenko was always helping humans and yōkai, even then. The word "zenko" which she later took as her name was coined thanks to her. She lived in peace for many, many years, doing what it is she always did. Watching human society grow and helping out when she could. At first, her brethren ignored the behavior. The humans still revered them, all was well, despite one odd man out. But when she continued to side with the humans even as they forsook the yōkai in favor of the Ether, well... things got messy. After a bloody conflict of interest, Zenko left her fellow yōkai to live amongst humans, hoping one day they'd come to their senses about the matter, and realize their pride wasn't worth the bloodshed. Since then, she's been working with the AP, sorting out problems and occasionally acting as an ambassador to the yōkai. Even after a long history, they still refer to her as freelance, but everyone knows she's pretty much a registered employee by now. She gets along well with the humans, but realizes after her time with them that while not all yōkai are prideful and vindictive, not all humans are flowers and sunshine either. Also desperately searching for a good man to settle down with, but whenever she mentions this, all the men in the vicinity seem to always be either absent, preoccupied, or distracted, so she has so far been, to her concern and exasperation, unsuccessful.

  • Job: Freelance Fighter and Ambassador
  • Ability Type: Natural
  • Abilities:
    • Fire Manipulation
      A well known trait of the kitsune, one which shines brightly in Zenko. Her abilities in combat are frankly monstrous, even for a yōkai. So much so she's been likened to a walking nuke on more than one occasion. This is partly due to experience and partly due to natural talent. Her fire manipulation is top-notch, and she can perform a variety of devastating Ao E and projectile attacks with it, as well as form weapons forged of fire. She is quite skilled with these weapons, usually blades, and they are generally her first, and most effective resort.
    • Omniscience
      Not literal omniscience, but thanks to limited telepathy and enhanced senses, Zenko usually knows just about everything that goes on around her in a 150 yd. radius. It's a blessing conferred to her by her nine tails, a sign of age and wisdom, even amongst her own kind.
    • Shapeshifting
      Just between her fox form and human form, though. She almost never uses the fox form, as it's not exactly any more inconspicuous than her regular appearance, and she finds it easier to move in human form. Plus, she really wants to find a guy.
    • Blessing of Inari
      A passive ability that actually has very little use to her, the blessings of her kind that follow Zenko are a natural trait of kitsune, especially longer lived ones. It bestows the gifts of good fortune and long life on those around her. While simply being in her presence doesn't grant much benefit, the potency of the blessing increases with the amount of time one spends with her on a consistent basis, as well as the degree of emotional attachment she feels towards the person. This had great significance in medieval Japan, where being good friends with a fox was considered to be of great importance.

Good thing I had many ideas floating around my head. And Zenko is better than what I had in mind, so no loss there.

Double post to add my first character, with more to follow eventually.

  • Name: Eloise Marguerite Croise
  • Age: 17
  • Gender: Female
  • Race: Human
  • Appearance: Eloise has short blond colored hair, grayish blue eyes and most often, a friendly grin on her face. She is quite a tomboy and has a mostly boyish and athletic build to her, though her face is very clearly feminine in slight contrast. She wears mostly white and blue colors, plus those of the uniforms of the local law enforcement.
  • Personality: Self assured, constantly striving to better herself, earnest and honest. A bit slow at times, though she makes up for it by taking her time to think things through when necessary and to consult books or people with more experience when faced with something she doesn't understand. An idealist and a very moral person who tries to set an example to those around her and to behave at all times like a respectable ally of justice.
  • Backstory: The eldest daughter of a relatively young couple who nevertheless have build up quite a family. Eloise has 6 little brothers and sisters and they all live in quite a crowded though cozy home. Seeing how hard it was being for her rather ditzy parents to support their ever growing home and given a deep sense of responsibility due to being an elder sister since quite young, Eloise decided by herself to join up with the Presidium and due to a combination of a little talent and a lot of hard work she managed to become an Officer. She now lives part time in the Presidium Dorms and works very hard everyday to preserve peace, better herself and continue to help sustain her beloved family.
  • Class: Melee
  • Job: Combat Officer
  • Drive Weapon: Eclair - A western longsword, made out of a silvery metal and inlaid with runes and carving all along of it to imbue it as a AMDW. The handle is made of a dark material and is crossed with electric blue lines which extend from the pommel all the way to the cross guard.
  • Ability Type: Ether.
  • Abilities: Eloise is a direct melee fighter, who is highly skilled in the use of her longsword complimented by using its AMDW abilities to channel her lightning magic. As for what kind of melee fighter, Eloise is... she is a skilled and disciplined one, who counts on precision, form, her agility and athletics to persevere in battle.
  • Elemental Affinity: Lightning.

  • Name: Oliver "Etrysggr" Atkin
  • Age: 24
  • Gender: Male
  • Race: Human
  • Appearance: I dress funny? I'm not dressing to give people a laugh!. But in more detail, he wears a standard uniform, mask and cloth redundantly covering it aside. His short hair is visible, dyed green, with a light brown tone being his normal colour. Under the mask itself is a pale faced man with bags under his brown eyes. Although the most remarkable feature about his real face is the Cheshire-like grin on it, which appears to be a permanent fixture.
  • Personality: Eccentric, energetic, and veers from goof-off to profession in a matter of moments. Oliver at times is very calm, speaking only when he needs to. Otherwise he can be a bit wild, having a motormouth while not standing in a single place for too long. Whatever mood he feels like being in, he works to make life better for everyone. Also he seems to go by a different name with each person he meets, although "Estrysggr" is the most common and used.
  • Backstory: As a child of a large family, there wasn't much stress put on him; Some of his siblings too supported the family even after they were old enough to live on their own. Still, he felt a sense of duty to continue the "tradition" even as his parents passed away. As a Officer in his own, strange way. Along with helping others of course.
  • Class: Designated Marksman (Just his own fancy way of saying "Ranged")
  • Job: Combat Officer
  • Ability Type: Psychic
    • Sight Jacking: The ability to use another's sight as his own. No adverse effect is given to the target, only that Oliver can see what they see. The distance to jack is long, however, he needs to see the target first to do so, and any subsequent jackings won't rely on sight as he apparently gets a sixth sense of where they are. Strangely, it seems that he doesn't feel disoriented by the multiple view points he sees, as there isn't a limit. But people are quick to point out that his personality might be a bit of evidence to the contrary.
    • Telekinesis: The ability to move things with your mind. Oliver uses this in two ways. First off, he can send a force as a push, like punching someone without actually making any real contact. Next is levitating an object and sending it as a projectile. He uses this to apply more force to his handgun rounds, or to change its course mid-flight. The drawback with his ability is that he needs to maintain line of sight with said objects, at least until he applies it to something else. Along with being able to use another's eyes...
  • Elemental Affinity: N/A

Much interest...

  • Name: Charles Lee
  • Age: 20
  • Gender: Male
  • Race: Human
  • Appearance: Note the blindfold.
  • Personality: Exceedingly calm, in nearly any situation, and very kind to just about everyone he meets. Spend some time around him, however, and you'll find him noticeably socially awkward, not getting jokes, puns, or cultural references. He also has very little idea of the differences between male and female, and as such doesn't understand Double Entendre or innuendo.
  • Backstory: Charles saw his parents murdered in front of his eyes at the tender age of three. The murderer's knife was the last thing he ever saw. Blinded, he started shouting for help. The killer was gone by the time the police arrived, along with most of his family's valuables. A local monastery adopted him, and taught him to meditate,to quell his grief. He meditated for many hours at a time, and eventually felt something draw out of him while doing so. An elder monk walked in to find an orb of ki glowing in the young boy's hands. The monks oversaw his training, teaching him to compensate for his disability, and in time he grew strong.
  • Job: Monk
  • Ability Type: Ki
    • Heightened Sense: Perhaps to compensate for his lack of sight, he began to listen more after he was blinded, and thus his hearing naturally increased. He later learned to use his ki to enhance his ears, adding to this effect even further, allowing him to fight as though he never lost his sight at all.
    • Ki Blast: Naturally, he can fire these off, as barrages or as singular blasts of energy. His most (and only) unique attack, however, is a self-made move called The Power of One: Become Many: he releases a blast of ki about the size of a basketball, which splits into two blasts, each half the original size. The two smaller blasts divide again into even smaller blasts, and then THOSE divide, etc, until the blast is a cloud of near-microscopic, very hard-to-see destruction.
    • Strengthened Form: His body can be strengthened with ki, making him stronger, faster, and tougher than a normal person. As long as He can keep pace with a cheetah, and with a running start could probably flip a compact car. He can also punch about three times a second, and has a reaction time of .4 seconds.

I'm interested in this. I'd like to ask a question or two about the whole magic categories thing, because I've got an idea (or two). If someone wanted to be a sort of Beastmaster, would they be one of the Youkai, or could they be a human? If they could be a human, would they be using ether or psychic abilities? I'm guessing ether since it seems more "outward" than "inward", but I'd like to check first. If that idea doesn't work out, I'll figure something else out. In any case, I think it would be pretty great to create a character who uses a pair of crossbow-nunchucks, that wouldn't be too ridiculous, would it?

[up] Beasts fall under Nature abilities which belong to youkai and their hybrids. However, it is possible for a psychic user to communicate with animals. Crossbow nunchucks? Go right ahead.

[up][up] No, I can't accept this. As said youkai only breed with those of close relation to them. Monks, Shrine Maidens, etc. of the sort.

I'm thinking of joining as a spiritual human, a Christian spiritual human.

I was also thinking of a House Youkai who is now in a relationship with the spiritual human due to an exorcism going different as planned (for one, they weren't malevolent).

Name: Prototype Transforming Combat Unit #1. Also known as Mirage for... some reason.

Age: 115.

Gender: Neutral and Female

Race: Youkai. Specifically, a tsukumogami of nothing other than a Humongous Mecha, with all the accompanying dangerousness this implies. Interestingly, the mecha was designed as an experiment in advanced applications of artificial magic, meaning that it also turns into a relatively normal sports car. After being left alone for a hundred years, it developed a personality and basically became just another person. Interestingly, rather than the object's simply becoming animate, a 'human' body was formed. Maybe being alive didn't allow it to completely rewire the controls?

Appearance: Girl, car, and robot.

Personality: Cold, lazy, and interested mostly in continuing what she's done over the past one hundred years. Something will almost certainly threaten the peace she enjoys so much of, however, which will incite her to fight.

Backstory: ... Built. Sat by a shrine for one hundred years because no normal person could work out how to operate the controls. Gained life. Started mooching off the shrine.

Job: Hanger-on to a shrine maiden.

Name: Inokuma Aiko

Age: 16, not that you'd be able to tell.

Gender: Female

Race: Human

Appearance: Yes, this girl is 16. Chronologically. However, she's stuck at ten physically.

Personality: Aiko's levels of energy are astounding. She's usually on the move, and she's very difficult to tire out. She's also almost excessively cheerful, rarely losing her enthusiasm or happiness regardless of the situation. In some aspects, she's as immature as she looks, often pouting when things don't go her way and even throwing temper tantrums of a sort if she becomes extremely irritated. She often takes advantage of having not grown physically since age ten, using her appearance to get movie tickets for a lower prices and other underhanded tricks of that nature. Aiko is also shy of the sun, and doesn't like going outside in the daytime, considering that her pale skin easily burns. She also has a passion for Elegant Gothic Lolita clothing.

Job: Shrine Maiden

Drive Weapon: Infinity Drive. The true drive weapon is the core of the device, a glowing red orb made of a glassy material. The orb has a handle attached to the rear end, which it is held by, and is about the same size as Aiko's head. However, around this core are several large, articulated metal plates that can orient themselves in different patterns to produce different effects and fire in different directions. A trio of black needles can orient themselves at the front of the orb to allow the beams fired from it further focus.

Ability Type: Ether and Spiritual Energies. Wouldn't be a very good miko without the latter.

Elemental Affinity: N/A

Alright, I dropped The Beastmaster idea and went with something different.

  • Name: Shamus O'Flanagan
  • Age: 29
  • Gender: Male
  • Race: Human
  • Appearance: Wears a hooded black outfit from head to toe, as well as a black combat vest. A black balaclava covers his pale face and red hair. Both of his legs, as well as his left arm, are prosthetics that were supplied to him by the AP, made out of a flat-black compound consisting of at least half a dozen metals and metalloids, with soft soles to avoid a large clanging sound when he walks. When he's not using them, he stores his crossbows in the leg sections. His wrist has a communicator that lets him use his pinky and thumb as a cellular phone, as well as a small wrist blade - he makes sure he never confuses the two. His right eye is completely black, while his left is a normal eye with a blue pupil. There are silver-colored stitching at points on his torso where organs were replaced. He also has gloves on, which are, shockingly, black.
  • Personality: Serious, though occasionally jovial and/or snarky. He doesn't kill innocents, but against his targets he's a combat pragmatist.
  • Backstory: His ability to magically tinker with metals on a limited scale proved useful in the field of electronics and small magic instruments. In his late teens, he started working as an assistant in the AP labs as part of a hands-on internship. By the time he was 23, he was working on a small team tasked with researching ways to increase the efficiency of magical circuits. Someone sabotaged a project, causing a drive weapon they were working on to critically overload, taking out half of the lab and severely wounding the other half. The blast nearly killed him, but AP were able to graft mechanical limbs to replace the lost ones, replace his kidneys, patch up a damaged lung, and replace his eye. After recovering, he knew he wanted to do fieldwork and fight, so he put in for a transfer - only to be shot down due to not passing the physical tests. Four years of practicing after work later, he tried again, and managed to put his skills to use as an assassin.

  • Drive Weapon: A pair of 70cm-long crossbows attached at the ends by a short chain, allowing them to be utilized as nunchucks. They are mainly made out of aluminum, titanium, and bits of palladium, with sharp tungsten-steel points along the ends of the bows. They can be stored in the hollow section of his calves, due to a hinge mechanism at the midsection and retractable arms. He mainly uses them in melee range, as he can only store around two dozen bolts in his prosthetic forearm. He is neither a weapon master nor a sharpshooter, preferring sneak attacks with his small knife, and mainly just has them for show, and the occasional small fight.

  • Elemental Affinity: Metal (Well, technically nothing. Or just conductors. Depends on how you look at it.)
  • Abilities
    • A sort of "wired" telekinesis. He sends out thought waves from his nervous system, but they do not propagate through the air like normal telekinesis. Instead, they only travel via electric fiends, meaning that he has to be electrically connected to the object, which means that conductors are the only materials he can affect. A non-conductive material will only let the atoms touching his skin move a microscopically small amount, to the extent that he might as well not bother. Additionally, the longer the path, the more intense he has to make his commands in order to reach the section he wants to control, with the energy costs increasing exponentially with both material amounts and distances. He mainly uses this to reload his crossbow, add some oomph in melee combat, and jumping.
    • Can alter the electric charge in a metal that is electrically connected to him, changing the magnetic profile, using the same "wired" principle as above. Normally just used for ceiling clings and hanging on to his keys.
