The donate button. It's not obvious because some troll decided it would be fun to troll the site, by repeatedly making a small donation, then demanding a refund immediately. His shenanigans took a huge amount of time to clear up, and almost got the site's paypal account pulled completely.

What if I could just donate $5? I'd like to give more, but I don't have that much means at the moment.

I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.

The Donate button I just linked to in the post above yours will take any amount. The one on your profile page is preset to $20.00

And you have to donate at the $20 level to get forum ads turned off. Lower donation levels won't do that, even in aggregate.

I don't mind the ads, as long as I'm still contributing.

If overall finances become a concern things like a public donation drive can be done.

What if I wanted, theoretically, to give something in the area of hundreds, or even a thousand?

Well, theoretically, you could do that through Maddie's donate link. Right?

Yep. It goes through Paypal. Unless they have a limit on how high of a donation you can make.

I'd be curious to know how Google can tell the difference between someone clicking on an ad link just to "help" a site get revenue and someone clicking on an ad because they're legitimately interested in the product/service.

not that I'm looking for a way around whatever it is, I'm just curious.

I also have to say; I respect FE's decision to forgo some ad revenue (by blocking the more intrusive types of ads) so that the site is easier to use. Doubtless that was partially a business decision, as Lord knows I've left ad-soaked sites and never gone back, but it is appreciated.

Drunk: IIRC they can tell by frequency of clicks across the whole compared to the average.

If the wiki was turning a profit it would no longer be a .org

If we ever get really tight for money, I think the forums are the first thing that should get shut down, if only temporarily. My idea for adding numbered pages was that older threads would get deleted but they seem to hang around forever, that' can't be very affordable.

Old forum threads get purged every now and then. Only TRS and IP threads are spared and those are to keep a record of changes.

Media threads that see plenty of regular use are kept around. It's the ones that nobody uses that get cut.

Wait. I'm not suggesting clicking on ads as part of a fraud. But how would anyone even be able to tell if you were? Unless you did something stupid like talking about it before you did it, or getting a hundred of your friends together to all do it, I don't see how it would be detectable.

At first I didn't realize I needed all this stuff...

I think they can tell how long you spent on the site the ad linked to. That's just my theory, though. I've always been curious about that too.

It may also be normal behavior vs. behavior on a single site. If you never/almost never click on ads, but you have a very high click rate on a single site, then they'll likely get suspicious. (And yes, they do keep enough data on each individual to be able to tell that.)

I was going to come in and say, how the hell do they tell you're just clicking on ads because "yay, revenue!", but that's already been answered.

For the record, .org doesn't mean anything different from .com nowadays, anyone can get one profit or not.
