This is the sticky thread for questions related to the namespacing of works. As in, "which is the right namespace for this work?"
Ideally, questions already answered are covered on the Namespace Map. If you know a namespacing issue has already been resolved, but it is not yet documented on the Map, please update the Map.
If you want to suggest a new namespace, don't post here, but in Suggesting New Namespaces
instead.
For easier reference, I've numbered my questions:
- #1: Where do animated films go? They seem to be distributed rather inconsistenly over Film/ (Puss In Boots, Whats Opera Doc), WesternAnimation/ (Disneys Anne Frank, Snow White), Anime/ (Princess Mononoke) and Disney/ (Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs, Der Fuehrers Face).
- #2: There are a few songs which have their own pages ("Pirate Jenny"). Where do they go – to Music/ or to Literature/ ?
- #3: Where do composers go – to Music/ , or are they to be treated like other creators, which hitherto stay on Main/ ?
- #4: Where do Talk Shows, Game Shows and News Broadcasts go? I guess you could call these formats Live-Action TV but they're not really "TV series", as in Series/.
- #5: Am I right in assuming that Puppet Shows go to Series/ ?
- #6: What about “hybrid shows”, i.e. segment shows that incorporate both live action and animation? (e.g. Die Sendung Mit Der Maus)
- #7: Where to put picture books? I am thinking of books like Der Struwwelpeter and Max and Moritz — books that are really not complete without their illustrations. They are not (yet) ComicBook/s, but to sort them under Literature/ feels a little unsatisfactory too.
- #8: The rule is to put works into the namespace of their original medium. However, once in a while there is a work which is little known in its original medium, and almost exclusively known by its adaptation. I’m thinking of Das Boot, for example: there's a novel, but it is almost exclusively known by the Petersen movie.
- #9: Should One Book Authors who are invariably tied to a single work be treated as a creator or a work page rather?— Currently, we have Samuel Pepys and Herodotus, but shouldn't these pages be at Literature/The Diary of Samuel Pepys and Literature/The Histories rather?
- #10: There are cases where I’m unsure whether to use the English or the original title. Is there are hard rule that determines whether Der Ring Des Nibelungen goes to Theatre/Der Ring des Nibelungen or Theatre/The Ring of the Nibelung? Even Wikipedia uses the original title.
I'd be grateful for input.

As I understand it, the medium distinction of Light Novels isn't the illustrations (American children's books have those, too), but the writing used. English only has the one alphabet, but several Asian languages have more than one set of characters.

A Mini Series is typically in the live-action television Series/ namespace, and first medium wins. Rarely, a work will be better known for its second medium (Webcomic.Girl Genius, for example, began as a print story before launching a website), and if you believe that is the case here, you could make the page in the live-action Film/ namespace.

I think this would be one of those exceptions... The Other Wiki calls it a "television film". Part 2 aired the day after part one. I found my DVD in the film section, it's on 2 discs due to the about 3 hours running time. I'm unsure how Blu-rays handle it. It's a case of disappeared from public knowledge and now resurfacing as a movie release.
If that doesn't make it an expectation, let me know. I'm not launching today.

I realize now that I might not have been entirely clear in my previous post. Whichever you choose, Series/ or Film/, is fine within the framework we have. In addition, if you categorize the work as a Film/, you may want the trope Divided for Publication, since it was published in two parts.

Ok, 'cause the Bollywood Movies index has a mix of both namespaces. And it seems weird to me to have a separate namespace for movies in a specific language. But I will use the Bollywood namespace I suppose.

I don't know what to make of Episode Guide. It's written in the style of Recap pages but done for a "work" that's a Just for Fun project by tropers.

I want to make a page for Molly Of Denali, a Western Animation series coming out in July. However, a podcast revealing all some of the backstory of the show is dropping tomorrow. Should I add the info from the podcast episodes onto the main page, or should I make a Podcast page for the Mo D podcast?
My guess is it'd depend on if the podcast info could stand on its own as a work. If not, then it could be put in the WesternAnimation/ namespace, noting that the info comes from the podcast.
I dunno if this was already discussed before, but shouldn't the page for the Lion King remake be in Western Animation? Currently it's in Film, but unlike the Jungle Book remake it has no live actors or sets, and is all computer animated.
I'd like to create a page for a series that I've created. Currently, I've compiled a list of ten tropes that this contains, so I think it passes the general trope minimum guidelines, and I'm pretty sure that I saw somewhere that people can create pages for their own works (if I'm wrong about that, or if this counts as advertising anyway, please correct me, and I apologize in advance).
My question is what namespace this series goes in, as it's in the form of a wiki that contains a number of stories plus reference material like character bios and location pages. Does this count as Wiki space, Literature space, or something else?

SCP Foundation is in the Wiki namespace, so that seems like it would work for your work as well. You can make a page for you own work, but keep in mind that The Fic May Be Yours, but the Trope Page Is Ours. So no adding YMMV items, and you're not allowed to delete the page later if you don't want it around anymore.

I have one more question (and hopefully this is the last one): What with this being in Wiki namespace, for cross-wicking, what boxes make sense to put a trope into? Should I toss them into Literature if this is in a story, make a new Wiki box for this, make some kind of Miscellaneous or Other box, just avoid cross-wicking because it'll be too annoying to have categories with only one item or a mildly inaccurate item, or something else?

Is the Light Novel namespace limited to works of literature that are marketed as Light Novels in East Asia? This question arises as some Japanese works of literature that are marketed as Children's Literature have blurred the line between the two. The following two example comes from the same children's imprint in Japan, thus marketed as Children's Literature and currently in the Literature namespace:
Separately, LightNovel.Gosick is no longer marketed as a light novel series, with newer prints moved to an adult imprint and illustrations pulled. This is partly because the author got a Naoki Prize in 2007 for another novel. Does that work still count as Light Novel any more? Scientia et Libertas | Per Aspera ad Astra Nova
