Can the reincarnation be a character diametrically opposed to the character they were in the past? With all of the trouble that would come with probably hating what you once were?

Yes, actually. There is no rule stating that a character has to be anything like their previous incarnation. If anything, differences are encouraged.

On second thought, I'll save the second character for later. I'm sure I'll have enough fun with Charles to distract me from any temptations in the form of famous writers.

@Moe: Oh, sure. Although... I was thinking of it as more of an 'endgame' sort of thing, something to use near the end or at the end if we ever reach a conclusion (unlikely as that may be with forum RPs). Plus, even if it could create the Elixir of Life, Peter probably wouldn't want to use it. After all, who wants to be stuck at 19 years old for all of eternity? They say most people reach their prime in their mid-twenties. He'd also have to grapple with the whole "Who wants to live forever?" question.

Basically, I'd like to keep that bit for now, but I don't ever intend to make use of it until A) a very, very long time has passed and B) Peter has gone through an enormous amount of character development. I am brainstorming so much character development. You don't even know. Carl Jung divided the process of self-actualization and psychological development according to corresponding alchemaical stages. I'm roughly going to try to align the character development to those steps, only having him move up the ladder in Philosopher's Stone powers when he's completed the respective stage. Rubedo is supposed to be the total union of opposites and perfect realization of the Self. Peter will probably never reach that stage, but if he ever does and you'd still like to cut the immortality thing at that point, I promise I'll be fine with it. :)

@Anno: Being in proximity was what I had in mind already, but it's my fault for not specifying. Wouldn't want him to be transmuting things from halfway across the city, would we? XD

How does a range of several yards sound?

After an enormous amount of fretting over details and such this is what I came up with:

  • Name: Patricia 'Trish' Michel
  • Gender: Female
  • Age: 16
  • Reincarnation Of: Michel de Nostredame
  • Appearance: A pretty, young, tall French teenager, who enjoys the grace of good genes. Her skin is light but not pale, virtually unblemished though prone to goosebumps. Here eyes are brown, her nose is well fit to her face, she has a natural blush and dimples when she smiles, neither too large or too small. Her hair is naturally blonde but she has chosen to dye it an autumn orange for effect. Her clothing choices are generally thick and heavy; coats, canvas pants, even when dressed for warmer weather Trish will normally opt for a scarf, multiple layers of whatever blouse she's wearing, and long pants. Here's a picture, alternatively.
  • Personality: A strong, independent individual who cares for little and is payed back in kind. Brusque in her dealings with others, she tends towards curt and to the point behavior, to the point where others would consider her rude. She refuses to accept commands and has a disdain for anything she feels is too controlling, rebelling against: her parents, her school, her friends, anything that she feels weighs her down. She is then perhaps far too much of a free spirit, stubbornly refusing to adhere to advice, common sense, or social grace as she carves her own path in the worlds against the wills of many of those she offends on her way. Hobby wise, Trish is very fluid and tends to jump from interest to interest quickly. However, she is energetic and finds passive 'sitting' activities impossible to stomach. This being the case, she is somewhat unaware of the workings of technology.
  • History: Trish was born to parents who could well have been used as the definition of counterculture, hippies of the strongest degree who self-exiled themselves from France and moved to some backwater American town to start a new, new age influenced life. Trish was born here, and grew up with weird magical and spiritual rituals and ranting against the 'man' inside her home and a sleepy and uninspiring American town outside. Trish had ambition, but that ambition was twisted in the oddest way by the parenting she received. Instead of making it up in American society, she wanted to make it out; and as a result she became the rebellious jackass she is today. Trish often plays hooky, spends a lot of time stalking the outskirts of the town ignoring everyone, and has almost no positive relationships except at her workplace. Her parents don't even buy her clothes anymore, that she all buys with her own money.
  • Abilities: Trish works in the post office to make herself an allowance, two years lifting packages and being rude to customers has given her improved strength compared to an average girl her age. She has excellent stamina and agility, and can perform basic but important tasks such as climbing ropes, rock faces, and so on. She's cunning if not intelligent.
  • Artifact: A diary in which Trish vents and writes meaningless drivel like poetry and drawings. This meaningless drivel ultimately turns out to be significant, as the writings are actually latent of her powers as a reincarnation of Nostradamus. The Prophecies, as they were known in the past, confer several powers to Trish which manifest in the content of her writings. These powers are diametrically opposed, as one develops the other becomes weaker and ultimately ceases working, and which power is active is dependent on Trish's cognitive state.
    • Trish becomes obscure, difficult to understand, and can flawlessly tell lies and hide already existing things that she draws or writes of with the power of obscurity. This power is latent to Trish at first, as her rebellious and independent tendencies allow her to thresh and separate reality itself. At it's peak, if Trish has become strong enough and is still the headstrong girl she was unaware of her past self, Trish can hide away the truth of the future under the cloud of obscurity, in short she can shut down the concept of foresight and planning.
    • As Trish embraces others, embraces the idea that some things cannot be fought against, and becomes more mellow, the writings become clearer and stronger. Trish gains the ability to discern the truth, find hidden things, all based on what her writings tell her. Ultimately, at it's peak, this power can reach into the future and find the truth of events there, or in other words, she can divine the future.

Mmmmm, let's see what I can come up with.

  • Name: Ronald James (Yes, it's a terrible joke.)
  • Gender: Male
  • Age: 16
  • Reincarnation of: Diomedes of Argos
  • Appearance: Olive skin, dark hair and eyes, a little on the short side (he gets it from his father) but powerfully-built.
  • Personality: Fiercely competitive. Doesn't like to boast, but won't take kindly to being insulted. He generally follows the rules, but isn't above bending them as long as they aren't outright broken.
  • History: A third-generation son of Greek immigrants, Ronald's family moved to Sanctuary when he was an infant. His mom's pretty normal. His father keeps pushing him to excel in school, and is regarded by others as a little... eccentric. (A psychologist would suggest that the man's projecting his shattered dreams onto his son.) It hasn't really affected Ronald that much: he maintains fairly good grades, helps out in various clubs, and just obtained his driver's license too.
  • Abilities: Ronald has a natural aptitude for sports - especially track and field. He has a particular affinity with the javelin, for some strange reason. Intellectually, Ronald is considered quite wise and level-headed for his age.
  • Artifact: Oddly enough, his artefact doesn't actually look like anything ancient - it's a small metal keychain with a tiny figurine of a woman attached to it. In fact, it represents the Palladium that Diomedes and Odysseus stole from Troy. You can guess what metal it's made of.
    • In RPG terms, as Ronald learns more about his origins, his primary stats (speed, strength, agility, intelligence, stamina, etc.) slowly improve, with an inclination towards physical ability and combat skill. It also symbolises Athena's favour, which manifests as the ability to interact with (and hit, if needed) supernatural beings, a vaguely-defined sixth sense and a slight tendency for things to go his way more often than not, but not to the extent where it can be considered a superpower in its own right. (Because Lancers could really use the help.) Aside from that, no other new abilities are granted.
      • (Hopefully we won't reach the point where Diomedes has to fight actual gods, but at peak synchronisation, he should be able to go toe-to-toe with lesser demigods - up to Super Weight 2, if my reading of The Iliad was any indication.)

•Name: Will Parker

•Gender: female

•Age: 17

•Reincarnation Of: Pescos Bill

•Appearance: [1]

•Personality: A very energetic girl who never seems to get angry. Seems to have a fondness for anything related to the Wild West. Talks with a southern accent despite being born a city girl.

•History: At one time she was feared due to her nasty temper and her tendency to take it out on other people. Her parents; sick of seeing their daughter constantly in trouble at school; started sending her to her grandfather's ranch every summer; in hopes that she'd settle down a bit. Her grandfather seemed to have a positive influence on her; as she returned almost a completely different person. Since then, she's been trying to atone for her past as the school bully by helping out the people around he as much as she can.

•Abilities: Has natural talent at using a lasso; and has very good aim with a pistol.

•Artifact: Pescos' Lasso. An indestructible lasso that lets her tie up anything. and I do mean anything. At full power; she'll be able to lasso a tornado.

Name: Han Blod Dunker

Gender: Male

Age: 14

Reincarnation Of: Sigurd(Can't link externally yet, but you can probably find him on Wikipedia...)

Appearance: Height: 5-foot-5-inches. Somewhat lean, but could be described as skin and bones. Hair: shoulder blade length, light brown. Skin color: tan white. Eye color: hazel.

Personality: always works hard, and is friendly with those closest to him, but is stubborn, has anger issues, disrespectful to those he thinks deserve disrespect, and doesn't like talking to people outside of his closest friends. He believes in following the rules to the letter.

History: Both of Han's parents died shortly after his birth, and he was adopted by a man named Ron, who Han has lived with in Sanctuary as long as Han can remember. He has recently been dreaming about a sword...

Abilities: Han is a competitive swimmer, and specializes in endurance events. He is also a cyclist.

Artifact: Sigurd's sword, Gram, capable of cutting through even the strongest of metals, and the hardest skins. It eventually evolves into Balmung.

I figured, since he's never had any experience with any kind of sword prior to gaining the artifact, he would need to figure out how to use it well, and he'd have to develop the strength to use it's power effectively.

Or, I suppose the sword could just start out weaker, and Han could go the Instant Expert route, either way is fine with me.

We already have that sort of thing twice (or three times, if you count someone who knows how to wield a sword beforehand), can't you try something else? =/

And if you have a sword that can cut through anything, you're liable to cut yourself in half by accident, since there'd be no resistance. >.>

If Han won't work, I can definitely think of something else.

Edit: but on the issue of self-danger, the sword's power is mostly lack of break ability. The sword has the power, but if you aren't strong enough(which Han wouldn't start out being), it won't penetrate. He could cut himself, but unless he jumped on the end of it or something, he wouldn't be capable of killing himself.

If it needs force to cut, the only reason it would be able to cut anything is due to being invulnerable (so that the other thing breaks first) but I'm fairly sure this sword is known for breaking, so that doesn't work.

Moerin: Sorry about that. Didn't mean to make it sound like Diomedes actually had Super Luck as a primary power - most of his achievements were won through his own strength, cunning and guts, but there were a few instances where Athena was clearly biased in his favour, and "Divine Intervention" as a power doesn't really work. (He's supposed to become Captain America, not Longshot.) I've taken it out for now and will try to work in something a little more vague.
