Books that progress like adventure games?

Not sure what made me think of it, but I was wondering if there are any books out there that capture the same sense of wonder and discovery as adventure games like Myst, Syberia, Longest Journey, Dreamfall etc. I figure mysteries might come close, though generally closer to darker and more grounded games like Still Life or Fahrenheit (if you can really call the latter "grounded"). I'm thinking more the sense of wonder & whimsy those games give you and how all the little discoveries come together.

Any stories out there that give you that "point-n-click adventure" feel?

Siggy boogy doog.

I can't think of any. Which is a shame, because I'd quite like to read such books, too.

Have you read At The Mountains Of Madness by HP Lovecraft? It's probably the closest to what you're asking for that I've read. Most of the novel is a journey of discovery through a once-inhabited (?) alien city.

Also, Anne Rice's The Mummy, or Ramses the Damned did give me a bit of a similar vibe to an adventure game. Of course, that might have been the archaeological environment.

EDIT: That said, neither are really whimsical.

Gormenghast, perhaps? It certainly has an expansive environment full of little details that are explored in a entrancing way. The setting is quite dark, though, so I'm not sure it'll hit that note of whimsy you're after, and there's not a neat unification of all the elements.
