[up] That’s still way too long. Can’t think of any parts that would work right now.

Artificial Atmospheric Actions has two quotes. The joke is that they’re actually the same.

[up]I think both are supposed to be part of the same quote to demonstrate... I dunno.. that all NPC behave the same way, I guess? I think it illustrates some other trope, so I don't mind pulling the entire thing.

"Traditions and holidays are important to all cultures, but a hero in one era may become a villain in the next as our historical knowledge expands and our values evolve."

History On Trial

Do you think this quote works for the Condemned by History subpage? The video is discussing how people came to view Columbus as a hero (heck, is because of him both Columbia and Colombia are named like that), but now at days he is considered a terrible man.

Admitedly the trope is about works and tools, but considering Columbus Day was an important day for the American continent in the past, may is worth mentioning?

The quote for Loki (2021) has a spoiler, the identity of the villain. Some proposals:

  • I am Loki of Asgard. And I am burdened with glorious purpose. -Loki
  • You ridiculous bureaucrats will not dictate how my story ends! -Loki
  • Welcome to the Time Variance Authority. I’m Miss Minutes, and it’s my job to catch you up before you stand trial for your crimes.
  • Laufesyson. Variant L1130, AKA Loki Laufeyson, is charged with sequence violation 7-20-89. How do you plead? – Ravonna Renslayer
  • The idea that your little club decides the fate of trillions of people across all of existence at the behest of three space lizards, yes, it’s funny. It’s absurd. – Loki

[up][up] I think this works better:

Loki: Are you taking me someplace to kill me?
Agent Mobius: No, that's where you just were. I'm taking you someplace to talk.
Loki: I don't like to talk.
Agent Mobius: But you do like to lie, which you just did, because we both know you love to talk. [Makes mocking hand gesture] Talkie-talkie.

"No one cares about comic books. That statement is hyperbolic, but only so much so. What would be a more accurate statement is that mainstream comic books, the ones focused on superheroes put out by Marvel and Dc, are considered less popular than other mediums, or even other comics in general. The comics that are popular? Manga, webcomics, stuff directed at kids for school, that kind of thing. Those are the markets that continue to have large readership and money coming in, and of course is still a fraction of consumers when it comes to tv and movies. As has been pointed out before, these days a mainstream comic book to be super succesful is to have orders on the range of 200.000 and 300.000 copies. So that's the maximum ammount of people who will be reading it, not counting digital sales, which there aren't any public sales numbers for. Compare that with, say, 'Game of Thrones which has viewership in the millions. Avengers, Captain Marvel, Black Panther, these movies made billions of dollars, that's what I mean I say no one cares about comic books. The actual readership of comic books of mainstream books is minuscule compared to movies and tv shows.

From Atop the fourth wall review's of Batman Forever.

How about this for Mainstream Obscurity or Adaptation Displacement?

How about this shortened version for Obscure Popularity?

"The actual readership of comic books of mainstream books is minuscule compared to movies and tv shows.''

Re: Loki: I vote for the 3rd quote Grigor suggested, the Miss Minutes one.

Re: Obscure Popularity: the full quote is way too long, but I also can't see a good way of shortening it.

The quote on Loveable Rogue is surprisingly weak given it's such a classic trope. Mal's certainly a good example of the archetype but nothing in the quote communicates that to someone who hasn't seen the show — it's just a guy saying he wants to be paid for his work, for all the reader knows he could be a plumber.

Any suggestions?

Edit: this seems like a pretty good alternative:

Helix: How do you know when you should break the law?
Sam: When systems evolve that crush the spirit! When the law is corrupt! When people cry out for justice! But mostly, when it's fun.

I'd say no to the Freefall quote. I'm not familiar with the work, and the quote doesn't come across as Loveable Rogue to me. It comes across as Large Ham.

[up]Those two things aren't at all mutually exclusive, plenty of loveable rogues are hammy.

Wedding Deadline and Skip to the End have minor variations on the same quote, and it's a much better fit (and Trope Namer) for the latter.

Suggest this for WD, either with or without the punchline:

Phoebe: It's too late, you missed your chance! I'm sorry, I know this must be really hard — it's over.
Rachel: Y'know what? No. It's not over until someone says, "I do." [exits]
Phoebe: ...I do! I do!

[up][up]I honestly don't get Large Ham from the Freefall quote. I'm not familiar with the work either, but I get that the character is someone who breaks the law for fun, but also to help others, which fits Lovable Rogue to a T.

In the case of Loki, remember that quotes should not be a random witty quote that's amusing. It should be either "THE" quote from the film (such as "Truth is... I am Iron Man"), or a quote that introduces the reader to the context or the premise of the work in a few words. The Miss Minutes quote tells us that there is a Time Variance Authority and that people stand trial before it. "You ridiculous bureaucrats will not dictate how my story ends!" tells us that there are bureaucrats enforcing that You Can't Fight Fate, and that Loki cries "Screw Destiny!". Even the "I am Loki of Asgard. And I am burdened with glorious purpose." tells us that he's a Large Ham, too full of himself (not much, but it's something). But Sinister's quote, what does it tell us? That Loki talks too much? That's not even completely accurate, and it even needs four lines of dialogue and the description of gestures to work.

[up]That's exactly why I like the Miss Minutes one. I've not seen the show but knowing the basic premise that quote seems to set it up very well.

The GTA quote works for Vice City. For Demonic Spiders, I think the first one (Earthbound) is best, but it's honestly still worse than the current.

In regard to Discar's post about the page quote for AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER, I personally feel that the quote that combines the different iterations of the opening narration works best, as it encompasses all the relevant pieces of setup provided at the beginning of the series. Admittedly, some closer attention to formatting would be helpful, but solely using the narration from "The Southern Air Temple" onward (as I take the "The Boy in the Iceberg" and "The Avatar Returns" to be one episode, as initially broadcast) leaves out some of that information.

I didn't say they were. All I said was that I don't get 'lovable rogue' from that quote. I only get Large Ham from it.

I agree. The Friends quote looks fine for WD. I'd leave off the punchline, the joke doesn't translate well as it currently stands, and isn't required for conveying the message.
