Great. The more the merrier."Eric was surprised when Andrea jumped up onto his shoulder. "Uh, Alright. Knock yourself out, watch the claws though, I don't need anymore poking wounds."

He answered Peter with normal volume, "Something about us being part god or demon, and insulting that lizard thing for using its power."

Cat rose again, fairly confident that she had the situation sorted out for the most part. Sugaar's electrical manifestation earned a few blinks; that much power could be useful. . . Or very, very bad.

When the cadaver-man appeared, she began to chuckle. She couldn't help it- the situation was just too impossible. The guy had to have been planning on making such a dramatic entrance, possibly for hours, beforehand. She lifted her hand in a 'don't mind me' gesture when he began to speak, and continued to laugh softly under her breath.

The odd expositional object floated towards her.

Caitriona Kelly, thou hast

"I know, I know, Brighid, Irish goddess of fire and healing and wisdom and a whole bunch of other things. Shoo."

The object proceeded towards the horned man.

Jack stayed quiet. Not like he could add anything to all of this anymore. When someone new entered this commotion, he continued being so, desensitized to all of this anyway. "weak and starved?" he muttered, not attempting to raise his voice to actually ask. "so we'll become stronger?"

Before he could hear the answer, the object that has been naming whatever the "essence" of everyone present made its way to him.

Jack Baker,
Thou hast been chosen to bear the essence of
the UNICORN, Mythical Personification of Unchained Purity.\

...A Unicorn. He had the thought behind his head that it was that, but just a unicorn? Not some horned god of something? Well he was already fine with everything else, this was just icing on the cake.

After it was done, it slowly made its way to the girl with the rabbit ears.

Yumiko looked up at the strange onlooker. Well, she had plenty of questions, that was true, and if this man held the answers...

"If you could supply us with an explanation of these recent and strange events, that would be greatly appreciated. I do not know about the others, but personally I would very much like to know where we are and what happened to us before awakening here. All that I can remember before fainting was that my home town was collapsing around me, and that it was raining thunderbolts large enough to shatter tall buildings."

Hugh only barely heard her as he plunged the heated spearhead into the trough of water besides him, releasing an intense hissing noise and a thick cloud of steam.

Don't breathe in the steam, boy, and don't drink the water. Metallic impurities in all of it.

Hugh did as he was told and kept his head tilted away from the steam cloud as the spearhead cooled. Once the heat was dispersed, he finally could actually see the floating block object.

Hugh Forrester
Thou hast been chosen to bear the essence of
HEPHAESTUS, Master of the Forge and creator of the Aegis.

"The what? I get the rest, but Aegis?" Hugh pondered openly.

Ah yes, the Aegis. A magnificent implement of protection.

"Shield?"

Now, I never said that, did I? Erm, not necessarily, is what I am saying.

Hugh took the spearhead, making sure to not touch the edges or the point, and affixed it to the end of a wooden shaft.

Now, give it to Jeffrey or Minamimoto. They are gods of battle, both innately martially skilled. You are neither of these things.

Hugh stared at this weapon he'd made. The point looked like the tooth on some sort of vicious animal, but the shaft was completely plain. He held it in his hands to heft it, feel the weight, and as he did the Forge sank back into the ground, to be used another day. Keeping an eye on the Basque lightning demon, he made a dragging beeline to the woman in armor with the bow as the prism made its way towards the man with the feathered arms. The one who was rather rude earlier. "Excuse me?"

SullenFrog (Elder Troper) Relationship Status: I wanna know about these strangers like me
#158: Jan 31st 2012 at 4:41:36 PM

At Eric's words, the mysterious stranger's mouth cracked into a thin, tight-lipped smile. Literally, even; his lips made a noise like dried wood cracking as they spread apart, and the sound gave Janice the chills. Even for this freakshow, this guy was exceedingly weird.

"Oh, have no fear of that, child," the stranger said, punctuating his words with an airy flourish of his right hand. "Despite appearances to the contrary, I am in no danger of expiring at any point in the forseeable future; of that, MasterDardek, I can assure you."

He turned his attention to Yumiko then, and was about to answer her question when Terrance abruptly rose into the air and quickly positioned himself in front of him so that they were staring directly into each other's eyes.

Janice blinked in surprise at this turn of events. He can fly, too?

You have eyes, do you not? Vritra growled testily. I believe they speak for themselves.

The cadaverous stranger glanced at the Inheritor of Sugaar, expression decidedly nonplussed, and spread his arms in a placating manner. "Such a suspicious sort you are, Sugaar of the Basques; your mistrust has cut me deeply. I simply wish to inform this unfortunate band of their proper circumstances, that is all. Now, I would ask you to remain calm and settle down."

With that last word the bizarre creature gently tapped the reptilian intern's chest with one gnarled finger. A dull, flat sound like a bell being struck oddly rang out as he did this, and with a brief flash Terrance would find himself rocketing away from the stranger and down as though he had been struck head-on by a bullet train; Sugaar, for his part, would find his control over the would-be meteorologist's body disrupted, leaving Terrance in in sole command and on the receiving end of a painful—if nonfatal and non-debilitating—crash landing.

Smile back in place, the pale and emaciated fellow turned back to Yumiko. "My appologies for that unseemly display. Now then...though the ground on which you presently stand may resemble the world in which you all were born, this realm is not Earth; nor, for that matter, is this place any sort of afterlife...though considering your circumstances, Master Forrester, such confusion is understandable. The devastation which you all experienced firsthand, and this world, are interconnected; for the latter is the result of the former. What you witnessed, young Inheritors, was the complete and total destruction of your mortal universe; the power of the Almighty has been broken, and with it your world—all worlds—have met their demise."

The creature paused for a moment, as if for dramatic effect, then continued. "Thus, what you witnessed was the end of all that you knew. You may call it Armageddon, Ragnarok, Gotterdamerung or any number of other things if it will comfort you, but regardless, your world is dead and gone. This day has seen the end of a great many things, to be certain, but for some—you amongst them—it is merely the beginning of something more."

There was a brief woosh of displaced air then, and suddenly Janice found that the creature was no longer seated in the tree—rather, he was standing before her on the ground, his deathly thin features set in an expression of utmost seriousness and his index finger pointing right at her, right up in her face. The young woman drew back, understandably alarmed; how the hell did he move so fast?

"As you already know," the stranger continued, slowly turning in place as he spoke so that all of the Inheritors would get pointed at, "you carry within you great power; the essence of beings divine and daemoniac, mystical and heroic, long dormant within thee, have at last awakened. Starved and weak they be at present for lack of men's faith to give them sustenance, but if you can prove yourselves worthy of the legacy you have inherited, if you can acquire the faith of those survivors scattered across this realm and prove your divinity in their eyes, then strong they will become—and strong in turn you shall be. When first you awoke this morning, you were but mortals blissfully ignorant of the destiny with which Fate has burdened you; but if you survive the coming days and weeks, if you learn to thrive in the crucible that is Metatron's Cube, then you will have become something else entirely."

He capped off this part of his speech by pointing off into the forest. Those in the clearing might find this somewhat confusing, given that no one appeared to be there, but from Atori's perspective, the corpselike man in blue would be staring and pointing directly at her. He held this position for a few moments, then turned to face the group once more and clasped his hands behind his back.

"You will have become the creators of a new world, young Inheritors. You will have become gods."

"Thanks Eric, I'll keep that in mind." Andrea retracted his claws, an odd action that he had never before attempted, but it worked well enough. His perch was in no danger of bleeding out any time soon, or at least bleeding out by Andrea's hand. The speech of their superior apparent inspired only skepticism in the cat god or whatever he was supposed to be.

Cat payed a bit more attention to this speech. Now there was some helpful information.

When the feline Inheritor spoke, she turned towards it with a mildly condescending expression.

"If we die, we're fucking dead. Simple enough?"

"I wanted him to answer. I mean, godhood or not, dying is still kind of a big drawback to all of this." Andrea already considered how pathetic it would be if none of the 'Inheritors' made it. Humanity would die with a whimper, it's history lost on the shoulders of a bunch of incompetents. That was quite a bit of pressure to live up to.

He didn't want to become a god.

Oh, fuck, he did not want to become a god.

Worshipers? People? He wanted nothing to do with them; he would rather be left alone than be revered. And power? What was he going to do with a god's power, laze about? He had no real ambitions; he knew that. Greater men than him deserved this. Very few people in the world mattered or made legitimate impacts when they departed—they deserved this. Not him.

But what else could he do in this place? The only path set out before him was to become a god against his will.

Jeffrey walked up to the cylinder.

As her vision slowly expanded once more, Atori marveled as she saw the minute parts of the assembled people, picking out individual scales off of Sugaar even. Slowly roving through the group and enjoying her new power a little more than she ought to, the girl froze like a deer caught in headlights as the cadaverous enigma turned and directed his gaze her way. Those eyes, peering at her... What she felt was something that couldn't exactly be defined by any word. The closest one could use to describe it was a fathomless dread.

Her body felt obliged to be statuesque, as though if she moved while being observed would invite some untold misfortune to happen. Already superstitious, her breathing turned erratic as if she couldn't remember exactly how to properly siphon oxygen from the air. Only when the being stopped his inspection did the girl finally move.

Collapsing in one sudden motion due to her legs not obeying its master, the girl shivered uncontrollably; her skin a pallor that one would often use to describe phantoms. The Japanese Inheritor couldn't get that image out from her head no matter how she tried, made even worse with the consecrated eyes she had inherited.

'of course he knows my name, he wouldn't be some mysterious being without that.' Thought Eric, as vaguely listened to the skeletal man's long-winded speech, snickering at the lizard man's embarrasing return to the ground.

That is, until the truth idea behind the man's words dawned on Eric. He might become a god.

He wasn't even sure he wanted one, sure he had the potential, but what would it mean. Would he still be able to be artistic? Or would he be too busy running things? And would he even be himself anymore?

Then again he didn't have much choice, die or become a god. And he wasn't going to die.

Hugh slid the spear down in his grip so that he was holding it by the base of the head, then turned it around and offered it to her.

"The god that I have, Hephaestus, told me to, uh, forge this for you." He said nervously, looking everywhere but her face. "To keep Sugaar in line, he said, even though we have worse fears from the man with the speech impediment and you have better weap—"

I protest! Even in my weakened state my iron is superior to mortal weaponry!

Hugh shook his head. "Sorry, he was talking to me—just now. Please take it. I thought I could make us some weapons to help—uh—help defend—ourselves."

He continued to offer her the spear, vision now firmly fastened to her boots. He couldn't help but vacantly admire the craftsmanship put into them, even though he was just doig it as an avoidance tactic.

"The end of the world..." muttered Vasiliki. "Did he say that God is dead? Did we kill him?"
Great power? she thought to herself.
Yes, said the voice in her head. As you've doubtless gathered, I am Khonsu the Wanderer, god of the moon. You have Inherited my... essence. While I am - as this... Person... Said, greatly weakened, you still have access to a measure of my power.

In her mind's eye, Vasiliki saw a faclon-headed man. He was strong, muscular, and tanned, and what looked like pale, blue-white fire surrounded his form. He waved his hand, and a stream of it shot forth.

The image faded. You can command the fires of the moon now, Vasiliki, both to freeze your enemies and to heal your friends, said the voice. It paused.
Have you forgotten me, Khonsu?    said another voice in Vasiliki's head. This one was deeper and more malicious than Khonsu's, she thought.
Who... Who are you? she asked.
Khonsu nefer khotep, the Evil Spirit of the Night... I am one of dear ol' Wanderer's aspects. I control the evil spirits that roam the dark... Though the only thing my name will invoke in this powerless state    -Vasiliki could almost imagine Khonsu nefer khotep's lip*

curl in disgust-    is to cause your enemies confusion and mess with their heads...
That is enough, said Khonsu's voice. You will not corrupt my... Our Inheritor. You will not.

Vasiliki shook her head. She had a god and his evil aspect in her head, and she had no choice but to become a god or die? For a while, she wanted to do nothing but sit on the ground and wail, but soon enough her optimism kicked in; if it was her Fate, so be it, and she'll do this the best way possible... Hopefully she'll enjoy this.

Yumiko could not help a small blush from creeping onto her face. He had made that weapon...for her?

Take it, Yumiko Minamoto. It is a weapon made with the skill of a divine craftsman. I can see that it is of excellent quality.

"Oh, th-thank you very much! I will do my very best."

Still feeling a little embarrassed, she accepted the spear with both hands. It really was of excellent quality, even she could tell. She wondered what to do with it, though...her father had never taught any spear-techniques, nor staff-techniques. Exactly how did you...

Stab. Parry. Block. Counter-stab. Incapacitate. Stun. Disarm. Immobilize. Throw. Pierce. Rend. Hamstring.

The knowledge flashed through her mind, and she gasped for air. Suddenly, she knew how to use the divine spear.

This is one of your abilities, Yumiko Minamoto. No weapon is a stranger to you.

She started at it in amazement, and for a moment, a strange echo was in her voice.

"I can use this weapon..."

"Um, good—I guess." Hugh said. He looked up, actually managing to catch her eyes for a second.

Wow. Nice eyes on her too.

"I mean—that scary corpse guy's pretty uh—dangerous—I wouldn't want you to hurt yourself or anything—just use it to make sure people don't... uh. Like. Be dicks. Be a policewoman sort of. The handle's wooden, it won't—won't conduct electricity, so you can take on the snake n—no problem." he smiled weakly. Then he turned to the corpse man. "So you obviously show not very much ill will—you attacked Sugaar because he threatened you for instance. Who are you, then?"

"Should you fail, you face oblivion," the stranger replied to Andrea's question. "The trials you shall be required to overcome in Metatron's Cube do not have varying degrees of success; it is a game in which you shall either succeed, or fail. There is no middle ground, and the stakes, quite literally, are all or nothing."

Shifting his empty gaze to Eric then, the cadaverous fellow paused a moment before continuing. "Scattered throughout this realm are those hardy souls who managed to withstand the cosmos' annihilation; they may number as many as the high millions, or as few as the low hundreds—I cannot say, for such knowledge is not mine to bear. Precisely how you shall go about acquiring their faith is entirely at your own discretion, Master Dardek, but were I you, I believe that finding them would be an ideal place to start. Be wary, however; yours are not the only souls endowed with divine essences. Other Inheritors also walk this Cube, and though some may be friendly and sympathetic towards you, rest assured that others will seek to manipulate or do harm unto thee. This realm is a place of danger, a crucible for gods-to-be, and to survive you must be prepared to defend yourselves by any means necessary.

"Now, then," he continued, gesturing off into the forest in the direction that Jeffrey had gone. "I would suggest that you go after your companion. Young Master Chan is on the proper track at present, blinded by denial and other emotions though he may be, but these woods are perilous, and its hidden paths are prowled by far more than simple wolves; it simply would not do for you to lose one of your number so early, particularly to so ignonymous an end. I would also reccomend you introduce yourself to the Inheritor of Sun Wukong, standing just outside the clearing there; doubtless the young woman would appreciate an explanation and an assurance that you aren't going to eat her alive. Fare thee well, young Inheritors..."

With these words, the stranger swept his right arm in front of himself and bowed respectfully to the group; then a harsh chime rang out as his entire body turned a uniform shade of blue and all detail vanished from both his clothes and the man himself, making him look as though he had become a man-shaped hole in the world or some two-dimensional silhouette somehow translated into three dimensions. Slowly at first, but with rapidly increasing speed, the entity's extremities began to fold up upon themselves like a piece of origami artwork, and within a matter of seconds he had been reduced to a palm-sized model of a housefly—and then this too folded in on itself and was gone. Once he had vanished, the prism immediately came to a halt and stopped rotating before disappearing in a similar fashion.

Whether consciously or not, Jeffrey would once again find himself running in the direction of that plume of smoke he had seen a few minutes earlier, and once again he would find the ground sloping gradually upwards as he slowly drew closer to the distant mountain itself. He would need to take care and mind his footing, for the ground was treacherous and the snow was piled heavily in some places; a careless step could easily lead to him acquainting his face with the forest floor if he did not proceed with caution.

The young Inheritor had a sizeable lead on his erstwhile comrades, and already he had left the clearing far behind him; it would take them a while to catch up. Some fifteen minutes into his mad dash, through the woods, he would hear the faint sounds of irritated grunting and childish laughter coming from a rise up ahead; clearly, someone—or several someones—lay beyond it...

Jeffrey continued to run. Maybe the other people here wouldn't be so noisy. The basic survival instincts—you need to eat, you need to drink—kicked in. He didn't want to die; it wasn't the kind of mania where he was absolutely determined that he not die, but dying certainly wasn't on the agenda. And the corpse-guy had said that he needed followers.

Eric watched the man dissappear and sighed, rubbing his face to try and alleviate the tension welling up inside his head. It was working right up until he cut himself with his talons. "Son of a bitch!!"

If Andrea didn't keep his balance, the sudden movement by Eric might knock have caused him to fall off his shoulder. Growling in frustration, Eric turned to his allies.

"Alright, lets go. There's nothing else for us here and I'm starting to get cold."

Eric walked off towards the treeline, expecting his allies to follow. Stopping at the edge he called out. "Hey! Sun Wookie! Come out if you want an explanation!"

Eric's mood was heading from confused straight to annoyed, fast.

Hearing the growing sounds of one of the supposed ayakashi (which sounded rather like an odd dialect to her ears), the girl known as Atori immediately attempted to leap to her feet. The problem with this is that sudden movements were horrible for a numb body, and she almost lost her balance as she stood upon her two feet again. Attempting to regain a semblance of her breathing and slow down her rapidly beating heart, the girl grabbed onto a nearby trunk.

With her body out of sync due to fear and a long hibernation of sorts, running away was sadly not an option. This is what I deserve... Letting her face compose itself into a calm facade, she simply waited in that spot for whatever came. Still, minute shivers of her hands betrayed her dread at what was to come.

Hugh nodded to Minamimoto—he blurted out a quick " I'm Hugh. Hephaestus said you were Ms. Minamimoto"—and limped in the direction of Sun Wukong's Inheritor. "Well, let's go then."

You briefly expelled fire when you were enraged. Now, use it to keep warm.

Hugh looked at his hands in confusion, willing some heat to appear. A brief spark flared into a guttering flame, nothing like what he had previously unleashed.

You must use this fire with caution. The fire of Hephaestus is to help, not to hurt. Keep yourself warm for now.

Hugh nodded to the voice in his head and kept going, slightly warmer with the flame in his left hand. "As I said earlier, we should get going. Nothing more for us here." he said, to nobody inparticular.

So it's social interaction that freaks you out, not speech!

Hugh chose not to respond to that claim. Instead he asked, "You can use the spear—Ms. Minamimoto? Nothing wrong with the—the sharpness, or balance? Of the spear?"

"Yeah, you're right, Eric," said Vasiliki quietly. "Let's move."
She began to follow him, but stopped. Contemplating her feet for a while, she finally walked forward for a bit, stopped, and started hopping two-legged hops toward the treeline.

When Eric stopped, she did, too. She peered in the direction the odd being pointed to earlier, squinting and tilting her head.
"That... Thing... Was right," she said, "I do see a woman there."
A Beat.
"Hey! You there! Are you Sun Wukong's Inheritor?" she shouted. Or meant to, anyway; it sounded more like a falcon's shriek.
