Vasiliki started to say something, but then Peter asked his question. Looking up to him, she said, "No, we are not animals. We're persons. my name's Vasiliki, this here" -she patted Eric's shoulder carefully, not wishing to hurt him again- "is Eric, the guy with the horn's called Jack, the girl there" -she pointed at Cat- "is called Cat, and and I didn't get the others' names."

She shook her head and turned back to Eric. "Anyway, I think you're right and we should stick together. Being alone isn't fun, not to mention dangerous when you're in the wild... Anyway, no I don't think Mr. Electrical Lizard here will try to eat us, why should he?" She said, sending an apologetic look toward Terrance*

. She tried to smile, but again failed. "Sorry, I can't smile," she said.

Eric looked up at the giant, "No, I am not an animal, I am the holder of the spirit of the great Daedalus, as is to be expected from someone like me. What are you exactly?"

He then turned to Vasiliki. "Yes, it would be rather hard to smile with a beak. Well, I suppose we should be alright for now then, and if something did happen I could fly away, my wings have to be good for something. Now, what do you suppose we do next?"

"He seemed angry that proper introductions weren't being made." Andrea arched his cat's back out, stretching it. "And I must say that I agree with him in that regard. That we were all running off without even trying to be sociable was hardly commendable."

As the girl reached the climax of her fall, instinct immediately flipped her over and drove her to land in a crouching position, her body immediately absorbing and releasing all the impact through specially coordinated bodily sychronization. Straightening up once more, the girl blinked once slowly and then several faster ones in successive silence. After a few more blinks, Atori's vision returned back to normal. Idly rubbing the tears out of her eyes, the girl paused when she saw the light show in the distance.

This time using her hands as a filter, the girl hesitantly walked towards the direction of the spectacle. She had never seen anything quite like this, and it was beautiful to her; the energies running around. Crunching through the foliage, she peered at it from a spot upon the slope and watched the spectacle with an entranced look upon her face. Still, the side effects of golden clothes were that it was incredibly conspicuous once light was in the vicinity, much like Sugaar's sparkling fog. Reflecting the waves, her golden clothes glowed like a small beacon in the distance, though the girl did not yet know this.

Vasiliki crouched near Andrea. She nearly petted him, but stopped a few inches from his back; eyeing her talons she put her hand on the ground. "Aren't you a cute cat," she told him. "What is your name? As I have said but a moment ago, I am Vasiliki."

— As the block made its steady way to Terrance and his possessor, his brows furrowed and his teeth clenched in focus. The buzzing of the air grew ever more intense and distinct by the moment. Sparks and bolts of electricity leaped from little puffs of mist into his scaly skin, the cuffs of his sleeves and the collar of his shirt growing more singed by the moment.

The block was only four meters away when the most dramatic change occurred. Terrance raised his arms, and his gaze, skyward... And it was as if an entire storm's worth of lightning was discharged over the party's heads, in every shade of colour imaginable. Then the lightning began to gather solely over his own head, congealing as it were into a shape just as the block arrived.—

Terrance Howe,
Thou hast been chosen to bear the essence of
SUGAAR, Basque God-Consort and Serpentine personification
Of the violent weather which beset the Earth.

— Over the Englishman's head, its tail seemingly terminating in his back, reared a monstrously huge serpent, composed entirely of different shaded lightning held together. The storm snake seemed to smile at the party in his lipless fashion, forked red lightning tasting the ashen-smelling air.

If the others were not overawed or distracted by the spectacle however, they would see that the man's face was quite different now. It was softer, and his eyes seemed on the verge of tears, darting to each of the godlings who had been angered by Sugaar with a silent, fearful apology.

The storm snake spoke, and this time his voice boomed like thunder. —

"I Had No Reason To Lie."

— The block zoomed off, towards the girl whom had laughed at him, and then coughed smoke. The Basque serpent, meanwhile, vanished, the lightning bolts which composed his "body" reintegrating into that of his host within one second. He took a deep breath, straightened his tie, and strolled off the now glassed patch of clearing, positioning himself to the side of Janice to watch the block's passage keenly.—

The cat looked up, saw the menacing eye of a falcon only inches from his own, and instinctively jumped back. Andrea realized that it was one of the persons that had awoken alongside him, and was more than slightly surprised. He supposed that the hand that had been dealt him was neither perfect not ineffectual, but rather he had at least a few wild cards that could either keep him on the fringe of social grace or charitably offer him some of it. He was lucky he guessed, as the god before him must have been quite the looker before becoming half a bird. Still, cynicism and experience made him weary of taking any luck for granted.

Alice watched as this little shifting block flew through the air and stopped in front of each of the other people in the clearing. She chose not to introduce herself to complete strangers and instead leaned back against a tree, crossing her arms. When the block moved over to the scaley man he decided to make a spectacle. All it earned him was a roll of her eyes and cementing the word "arrogant" into Alice's mind.

The little block started to float over to Alice, who blinked in surprise and stood up from her position. She had no idea what the hell it was, but it seemed relatively important. Once it got close enough she grabbed it out of the air and turned her back to everyone else in order to read it. No way was she going to let anyone else read this.

Alice Gray

Thou hast been chosen to bear the essence of

NUE, King of Chimeras and poison of the night.

Alice was a bit more than a little confused. She tossed the little block over her shoulder, allowing it to continue its duty and float over to the muscular asian woman with the bow. Alice crossed her arms as she though, no idea what a Nue was.

That would be me. We're going to be stuck together for a long time. Don't worry though, you get something out of this deal. Like the snake you too have powers.

Alice jumped again, looking around for the source of the voice before giving up. Either she was going crazy or some serious shit was really going down. Probably both to be honest. She closed her eyes to concentrate on the voice.    This is probably a lot to take in, but don't worry. I'm sure you'll do just fine.    She wasn't sure if she liked the sound of that, but she didn't really seem to have much of a choice. Alice listened as the voice explained her powers.

The block was moving very quickly now, so Andrea supposed they once more had the reptilian god to thank for stopping them long enough for introductions to be made. It in fact, landed in front of him and gave him his destiny while he awaited a response from Vasiliki. The surface of the block began to shift, became unusually grainy. It was as if the message upon it were written in sand.

Andrea Antonio,
Thou Hast Been Chosen To Bear The Essence Of
BASTET, Protectorate Of The Fruit Of The Nile And Matron Of Cats.

Andrea raised an eyebrow, or whatever a cat would do in a situation prompting that human response. Meanwhile, the block wiped itself clean and moved not very far to the falcon headed goddess to grant her it's dictate.

Vasiliki looked up at the block; it positioned itself near her, and wiped its surface again. This time, when writing appeared, it was large and block-like.

Vasiliki Leonedas
Thou hast been chosen to bear the essence of
KHONSU the Wanderer, the ancient Egyptian god of the Moon.

"That explains the falcon head," Vasiliki said to herself. Turning back to Andrea, she said, "Well, I'm pleased to meet you, Andrea. Where do... Did you come from? I'd guess that you're not from l'Isle de-Fabres, are you not?"

The block, meanwhile, continued to Cat.

Michael rubbed his forehead and leaned against a tree. He sighed. This was going to be a bad day, he could already tell. The block continued to drift between the various group members, introducing them and naming the essence they bore. Most of them he recognized, with the exception of Sugaar. His knowledge of Basque beliefs was sorely lacking. The lightshow that resulted from his introduction was somewhat intimidating, causing Michael to grimace and back further against the tree.

Now the man seemed repentant, as if he'd had no control over his previous actions. Given the nature of the display, was it possible that the god whose body he shared had taken the reigns, if only for a short time? A chilling thought indeed. He feared that Anansi may do such a thing in the future, though it was doubtful. Tricksters suck as him rarely brute-forced that sort of thing.

See? You're learning.

Michael shuddered. He didn't like the idea of having someone poking around in his thoughts, no matter how much it may have eased social interactions. There were some things that he'd prefer be kept private, minor though they may have been. Michael looked at the others once again, taking stock of their unusual appearances. This was interrupted, however, when one of them, a woman with the face of a hawk, mentioned something about l'Isle de-Fabres.

He looked at her, then at the cat. The fact that it spoke was curious, though it was getting to the point where he could pretty much accept anything. A talking cat was peanuts compared to some of the other stuff going on, though there was a lot of evidence indicating that he hadn't always been like that. That aside, he decided it was time to speak up again. He'd likely be ignored, but that was really the most favorable outcome in Michael's opinion.

"So... you guys're from the island too?" He asked, pointing at the two.

Janice huffed with satisfaction as the fog barrier disippated, a noise which sounded more like the snort of some large and powerful beast—a predator glad to have proven its dominance over a potential rival. Why this analogy sprung to her mind, the young woman was not entirely sure; but in any event, Thunder Lizard had evidently seen reason and chosen to back down, and for that she was both happy and relieved. The young woman relaxed her posture, her heated breath cooling down until it was no longer visible, and crossed her arms as she watched that strange object move amongst the rest of the group to deliver its glowing message.

As it did so, Janice began pondering what it had told her. She had never heard of this Vritra thing before—though it seemed clear now that this name belonged to the dragon which had been haunting her nightmares of late, and whose 'essence she now bore (whatever that meant)—but the word 'Asura' had rung a bell; she wasn't a big fan of Hindu mythology, despite being of Indian descent, but she did know that the term referred to a group of gods...or were they demons? Perhaps they were neither, or both, but either way it didn't matter; evidently this Vritra was one of them, though the fact that it was also a dragon struck her as somewhat strange—weren't most Hindu gods supposed to be bright and colourful people with a lot of arms? And weren't Asian dragons supposed to be nice folks, and not evil, fire-breathing breathing monsters like the one in her dreams?

Enough, the beast's voice growled in her mind. Such questions grow wearisome, destined one; their answers shall only become yours should you prove yourself worthy of possessing them. If you must insist on letting your mind wander in this fashion, then put it to sensible use by learning what you can of the other Inheritors here; today's ally could easily become tomorrow's adversary.

With that admonishment, Vritra fell silent and its presence seemed to recede from Janice's mind. The young woman frowned, more than slightly off-put at being chastised by the draconic Asura for simply having had a stray thought, and listened more intently as the prism continued to identify the essences of the other people here; Bug Man was apparently Anansi, some sort of African thing, and the man with wings for arms was Daedalus*

—and upon learning this, he started to freak out for some reason. Janice was a little alarmed at this, but thankfully the bird-faced woman—Vasiliki, she believed her name was—quickly stepped in and managed to calm him down, and as the man introduced himself as Erik Janice turned her attention to the next person.

Looks like it was Thunder Lizard's turn to be identified, and evidently the man decided to put on a little show; as the prism reached him, a huge and blinding torrent of multicoloured lightning suddenly lit up the sky overhead before focusing itself above the reptilian fellow, forcing Janice to shield her eyes with one arm; and as the device revealed his name to be Terrance*

the lightning formed itself into the image of a big-ass snake of some kind, which gave the entire group a grin that the young woman wasn't sure how to interpret. For reasons she could not explain, Janice found herself baring her teeth and growling low in the back of her throat; the lightning seemed to set her on edge, and she had a nagging suspicion that it wasn't simply because that much lightning could probably vapourize a small hill...

At the same time, she noticed that a strange expression had come over Terrance's face; it seemed like he was terrified of something, and almost begging for forgiveness. The snake itself spoke then, before being sucked into the reptilian fellow's body like water soaked into a sponge, and Janice found herself wondering just how much of what had happened earlier was Terrance's own doing and how much was Cigar's*

.

He moved to stand beside her then, a move which struck Janice as just a little forward at this point in time, and in response she shuffled a few inches away before continuing to watch as the prism continued on its way; she was a little surprised when the girl it next approached turned away to keep everyone else from reading it, but this didn't bother Janice all that much—as far as the red-skinned athlete was concerned, she was entitled to her privacy. A dissaproving rumble echoed within her mind at this thought, but she ignored Vritra's discontent and continued to watch as it identified four more people and four more essences*

in very short order.

At that moment someone mentioned l'Isle-des-Fabres, and Janice's ears perked up as she turned to face the one who had said the name of her island home. It was Vasiliki the bird woman who had brought it up, and several others soon chimed in to say that they too lived there. Blinking in surprise, the sari-wearing young woman stepped closer to this small group.

"Wait...you guys are from l'Isle-des-Fabres, too?" she asked.

A few moments later, the group would find their individual musings and contemplation suddenly interrupted as the slow, sharp crack of a pair of hands being loudly clapped together came from somewhere up above. Were they to look up, they would find a strange figure seated in the highest branches of an aging oak tree, legs crossed and leaning casually against its trunk as if he often spent his time in such high places; dressed entirely in aristocratic clothing of a deep blue colouration, this figure's skin was deathly pale and drawn tightly across his emaciated frame, to the extent that he almost looked like a wizened corpse. His bald head stared down at them all, an expression of mild amusement on his gaunt features; a keen eye might notice that his eye sockets seemed disproportionately large for the size and shape of his head, and of the man's eyes themselves nothing could be seen—yet there was definitely something within those cavernous black sockets, something shiny and twinkling which cycled through a veritable kaleidoscope of different colours and hues.

"An impressive display, young master Howe," the figure rasped, his voice dry and dessicated; he placed peculiar emphasis on some of his syllables, making his words sound lilting and bizarre. "It is always fascinating, to see how power—even so little as you currently possess—can go straight to a man's head. One would advise caution, however; powerful you may be, young Inheritors, but many are those with power who now reside in this crucible. Gods thou art not—the essence of beings both divine and daemonic dwell within your hearts, to be sure, and no longer can you truly be considered merely human and mortal...but weak and starved they be, and the mantle of divinity is not yet yours to claim."

The stranger paused, staring off into the distance and scratching at his chin in contemplation. "Demigods would be a more-apt term in describing thee, Inheritors—or perhaps superhuman would better suit your fancy? But I digress; doubtless an explanation is what you desire and require, one more through and comprehensible than that which your recently-awakened essences can provide."

Hugh watched the proceedings passively, though he did shrink away when the thundering reptilian flung lightning around—holding metal tongs which were holding heated metal could be a bad position to be in.

"I think that we have already formulated a fairly accurate assumption of our situation." Hugh said, "It's the afterlife, right? Or an otherwise higher plane of existence?"

Hugh's arms were dragged over to grab a hammer by Hephaestus. He returned to the furnace and anvil, then started hammering on the hot metal, warping it to a fine point. He sort of flinched whenever it happened, because the clanging was really loud. Jeez.

Eric stared cautiously at the lightning lizard, that snake had really been something, and he was beginning to feel less and less safe, it was probably a good idea to find allies. "So, Peter, Andrea, how about we stick together huh? That way it'll be safer."

...He could have sworn he heard that laugh again, it was definitely an old laugh, full of wheezing, but where was it coming from?

Putting it aside for now, Eric was about to rejoin the conversation when someone started clapping. Looking up, Eric's vision suddenly sharpened, everything becoming closer and easier to see. He was disorientated for a few seconds.

'Ow, what the hell was that? Huh, well this could be useful.'

He spotted the skeletal figure sitting on the tree, dressed in strange blue clothing. Eric noted it had little in the way of eyes, maybe it had some form of extra-sensory perception. The being began to speak, warning them of dangers and calling them Demigods, Eric certainly liked the sound of that, before finishing.
