Not incompetence, no. Deliberate subversion of the state's intelligence agency by foreign intelligence agencies operating solely on behalf of the RIAA and other such groups.

Treason, in other words.

Well, that is what we called it over here when Roger Hollis, Guy Burgess, Donald Mc Lean, Kim Philby and Anthony Blunt did the same exact thing for the Russkies.

Megaupload is dead; long live Megaupload! Or: Kim Dotcom announces a new site (while still awaiting extradition).

Any news on what happened to the server data?

Megaupload's case was not let OffOnATechnicality after all, unfortunately. So the data will be sitting in the bowels of Carpathia until the case wears through, and probably even if Megaupload is let off. (The federal government has said that they can keep Megaupload assets frozen indefinitely even if Megaupload is found not guilty.)

At this point Kim should counter-sue the government, and cite that his right to speedy trial is being violated.

[up]He can't do that.

Everyone is guaranteed the right to a speedy trial, but if a defendant prevents his own trial by refusing to enter the country so s/he can't be served with a warrant, then they forgo said right to a speedy trial...

Yeah. The clock on a speedy trial begins to run when the defendant is apprehended, and delays caused by the defense stop the clock.

Anyway, what I predict will happen is that New Zealand will refuse to extradite, the Feds will maintain the cold case permanently, and Dotcom will have a permanent, unenforceable U.S. warrant against him. Meanwhile, the old Megaupload data will never be released, but Mega will start up anyway and the U.S. won't be a ble to do anything about it.

Then hackers get in and get the old Megaupload files and reupload them.

But we all can dream, can we?

If the feds left the Megaupload servers connected to the internet then they deserve worse than just getting those particular files stolen.

Like say...

Someone decides to steal the files, then replace it all with a worm that fries up all the DOJ's databanks, leaving them with no more information?

Kim Dotcom has recently committed to bringing back Pacific Fiber, thus perhaps buying my support at a future date.

Because our internet infrastructure is capable of a fair bit more than it's utilising currently, but we're at the mercy of a monopoly. I'm not sure how he intends to tackle this monopoly though, which is why my support isn't immediate.

Dotcom? Make a lot of money, like any businessman. But he's probably incredibly paranoid due to the fact his livelihood was taken from him what seems to be a combination of the MPAA/RIAA really really hate innovation being forced on them by competitors and basically bribing the Obama Administration (Biden's a friend of Chris Dodd, the current MPAA head, and Hollywood is the rich bankroller for the Democrats).

Well, if they're gonna keep all the data and they have connections to the entertainment industry, they could at least give the music that I made and uploaded to MegaUpload a listen and get me a record deal.

Insert witty and clever quip here. My page, as the database hates my handle.
