The Communal A Game of Chance Series Discussion

Go To

So, here we are, and welcome. The following is intended more for newcomers; former players of Round Two were already informed via PM what this is for.

Obviously, this is a discussion meant for the A Game of Chance series of RPs, not just one of the two installments. I, Crystal Glacia and Motree are the current GMs.

So, why do we need a separate thread for this? There are a few reasons:

  1. PMing 20+ people who may or may not be interested in returning announcements, even if they're copypasted messages is a pain in the ass.
  2. Our other two discussion threads were locked by the original GM, and I don't really want to bother the mods just to unlock a thread. Besides, a new thread means a fresh start.
  3. Motree and I wanted there to be a single, public place for announcements and general brainstorming concerning our third installment, mainly due to reason 1. We've heard many potential concepts float around, but we want to get it right this time. Round Two had to be shut down due to inactivity, and I hope it never happens again.
  4. It's nice to get together. I originally considered putting this in Troper Covens, but that doesn't get a whole lot of traffic.

This is intended not only for those who were PMed about it, but also for potential newcomers, friends of players who were told about it, and even players from Round One who couldn't stick around for Two or had to drop out due to real life. Even if you don't think you'll be coming back, drop by and say hello if you want.

Now, this was primarily intended to help us plan, so I've inserted links to the RP threads.

I'll also be putting together a few fact lists, which will be posted up here for reference.

At that, I hope all of this works out.

UPDATE March 26 2012: A Game Of Lies has been launched, and signups are closed. This thread will only be used for the posting of reference lists to prevent the thread from being lost.

UPDATE February 4 2013: The A Game Of Chance series has been put on hold indefinitely due to school and later college on the part of all three GMs. A reboot has been talked about, but nothing definite has been decided upon. If you are still holding out, keep this thread on your watchlist and stay tuned.

Hi everyone. I was kinda suprised how fast the other thread got locked, so I guess it's good to have this one, even though Glacia's new avatar sucks.

Should we start by diagnosing/ acknowledging the problems of the last game, or are we going to start on a more positive note?

[up][up] Objection. That's totally irrelevant!

[up]Mentioning the problems first sounds positive enough for me.

Inactivity in collaborative online projects results from lack of interest or real life interference. It's more figuring out why people leave; I think it got a little convoluted when the factions started interacting.

You could also share ideas for Round Three if you want; RP-related conversation topics are up to you guys tonight because I have a shitton of chemistry homework.

The game should take place in an isolated area so we don't have to worry about security cameras, witnesses, and law enforcement barging in and bringing the RP to a halt by arresting people. Without the OCMPA, there will be no one to bail out the contestants.

By the way, I will definitely use Arzt again. Maybe with a different trinket.

An island. That's interesting.

By the way, I'll either use Bryan or Finn for the next one.

#15: Jan 19th 2012 at 1:58:17 PM

[up][up]Agree with that.

[up]I'm neutral about the island. I don't have anything against it, I just don't have anything for it either.

By the way, are the rules going to be pretty much the same or there's gonna be a big change like how teams were added in game 2? I like the idea that the rules between games constantly change, both mechanically and thematically*

The setting could still be a big city, but other inhabitants are only there for scenery. Someone has to run the restaurants and hotels and coffee shops, after all. They don't speak to the players if spoken to. The police are blind to the activities of the contestants. That should be explained in the Orchestrator's text, probably.

-votes for San Francisco-

As for hospitals, well, having a bunch of players ending up in there could really slow the game down, but I'm not sure what to do about that.

[up][up] We don't know yet. Did the teams cause any significant problems is probably more what should be thought of, if we consider bringing them back or not. *slips back out*

Yes, but if characters don't have teammates to get stuck with, they'll just get stuck on other characters. Also teams allow a character more room to do something while waiting for another to post (you can't really do that if you're interacting with the guy who's planning to kill you). So yeah, I'm not sure if teams help or not.

I nominate St. Louis, since I'm shifting the setting of my book to there.

What's better then destroying the largest outside theater in the United States?

Destroying the Golden Gate Bridge, toppling the Transamerica Pyramid, or crashing an expo at the Moscone Center, to name a few.

Besides, we can tie cinderblocks to people and throw them in the bay!

Hey, the entire area of St. Louis has two main rivers!

And we can hit someone out of Bush Stadium, cut down the elevator in the Arch, shatter the Jewel Box, release the animals in the Zoo, burn Forest Park to the ground, derail a trolley, and tie a blood-stained bow around the Science Center.

Indeed. The best way keep things from getting stuck, in my opinion, is to encourage the game to progress, so that the number of people we're relying on decreases over time.

With what specifically happened, though: we needed Mary to advance the story, and her being retconned into death left me unsure of what to do or where my character even was.

Also, one of these days I'm going to post a Motive Rant I was planning for Gear to give to Natalie in here.

I regularly visit San Francisco, so I know what shit looks like.
