Hmm... kind of a tough choice for number 5.
1. Kohaku
2. Chie Isurugi
3. Tsugumi Komachi
4. Usami Haru
5. Saber
That should be it, though I'd say that the last one, Saber, is more of from a literary perspective...

Full Battle ModeTop ten. Since that's a lot, I'll offer an explanation as to why for a few.
- Kotomine Kirei: Favorite villain of any story. And his voice is amazing.
- Usami Haru
- Tohsaka Rin
- Arcueid Brunestud: Because angst is for pussies.
- Taichi Kurosu: He's just so damn broken. I can't relate to him, but I can understand him and it's kind of heartbreaking that's so screwed up.
- Morita Kenichi
- Komachi Tsugumi
- Kurugaya Yuiko: I can relate to her extremely well.
- Mary Christie: Moe Agatha Christie? Also has one of my favorite VAs and can be genuinely funny and badass? Awesome.
- Emiya Shirou: A difficult one. I don't actually like Shirou that much, so I wanted to put in either Lambdadelta or Keiichi ahead of him. However, Shirou is just a great character that FSN simply doesn't work without.
- Lambdadelta, Bernkastel, Beatrice: All three tied at first place because they are all absolutely awesome antagonists/wild cards.
- Tohsaka Rin
- Usami Haru
- Mary Clarissa Christie
- Lilly Satou
- Fifth War Archer
- Furude Rika
- Chie Isurugi
Kotomine was going to be number 1 in my list. But Kyousuke is just so entertaining in everything he does. Crazy Awesome and amazing and amazing and amazing. Haru is similar. She's weird. I don't care that much about how she's smart but her personality is so hilarious to watch.
I wanted to mention Lambdadelta as my favorite of the witches, but I felt Shirou was a more interesting character. Beatrice lost a lot of points once she became a good guy.
I do find Shirou really interesting as well. Don't get why so many people have beef with him.
^agreed, question arcs was when beato really shone. Especially in Ep 3. I was honestly taken in, thinking, "how boring, why did they take such a great character and turn her into a run of the mill tsundere"... and then BAM.
Episode 8 made me into a huge fan of Lambdadelta. Did not care all that much for Takano Miyo though, strangely enough.

They're completely different characters.
Isn't one supposed to be based off the other?
...Strangely enough she reminds me more of Satoko, for some reason.
Well, there are implications of ties between the two and Lambdadelta's design is based off of her. However, their personalities aren't very similar.
The Lambdadelta's Diary TIP explains that Lambda is the driving force behind Takano. Think of it as Lambda being the player of the "Takano" piece on the Higurashi gameboard. Extending the metaphor from what we know in Episode 6, Featherine is the player of Rika/Hanyuu, and Bernkastel is basically all the dead "Rika Furude"s ascended into a player.
MAL || vndb || BlogLambda is an amazing character as is Bern. I never really liked Beatrice all that much but she's pretty entertaining too. The reason I chose Battler is because he just doesn't give up. And when not in serious mode, he can be pretty hilarious.
I don't think I'd really be able to make a list right now, but I find it interesting that Usami Haru is in everybody's list so far (and would probably be in mine were I to make one.)
Well, she happens to be both entertaining by herself and have an excellent dynamic with Kyousuke, who is probably rather underrated when you think about it. Sort of like how Haqua in TWGOK gets a huge fanbase because she plays well off of Keima.
I concur
There's too many to choose so this will be inaccurate in less than a week but it's still a fun exercise.
1. Morita Kenichi
2. Rintarou Okabe
3. Usami Haru
4. Miyamura Miyako
5. Tohsaka Rin

I have no idea.Re: Lambda
I though the implication was that she was Miyo, but then she managed to escape from being trapped in the gameboard, in the same way Furude Rika "escaped" when the cycle was broken?
And yeah, I wish more protagonists were as entertaining as Battler.
Clearly I need to actually play the Higurashi novels instead of just watching the anime/reading the manga to really understand what the hell is going on in the When They Cry-verse.
I'd recommend it, yeah. I find Higurashi better than Umineko. Just don't forget the multiple patches to fix the music and graphics.
There's a lot of freaking amazing characters in visual novels. It's realllllly hard to choose one. But if you had to... Pick one. Or rank your top x.
